THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A

* SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF
NORTHERN NORTH CAROLINA
SOUTH-CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST VIRGINIA
COASTAL WATERS

* EFFECTIVE THIS FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 255 PM UNTIL
1000 PM EDT.

* PRIMARY THREATS INCLUDE...
SEVERAL DAMAGING WIND GUSTS TO 70 MPH POSSIBLE
SEVERAL LARGE HAIL EVENTS TO 1.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER POSSIBLE

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 85
STATUTE MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 10 MILES SOUTHWEST OF
RALEIGH NORTH CAROLINA TO 60 MILES NORTH NORTHEAST OF RICHMOND

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

DISCUSSION...TSTMS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE AND
INTENSITY THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE AFTERNOON ALONG A LEE TROUGH
STRENGTHENING ALONG THE PIEDMONT. HERE...THE AIR MASS HAS BECOME
UNCAPPED WITH MLCAPE VALUES AROUND 2000 J/KG. THIS INSTABILITY
OVERLAPS WITH THE SRN EDGE OF A BELT OF RELATIVELY STRONG /50 KT/
MIDLEVEL FLOW ROTATING THROUGH THE BASE OF THE LARGE-SCALE TROUGH.
THE RESULTANT ENVIRONMENT IS SUPPORTIVE OF SUPERCELLS AND BOWING
STRUCTURES CAPABLE OF DAMAGING WINDS AND SOME HAIL.

AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
TO 1.5 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 60
KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 500. MEAN STORM
