MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2077
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0526 AM CST FRI DEC 13 2013

AREAS AFFECTED...NERN KS THROUGH WRN AND CNTRL MO

CONCERNING...FREEZING RAIN

VALID 131126Z - 131630Z

SUMMARY...FREEZING RAIN WITH .01-.05 INCH PER HOUR RATES WILL
DEVELOP THROUGH NERN KS AND WRN THROUGH CNTRL MO THIS MORNING.

DISCUSSION...LEADING EDGE OF AN EXPANSIVE AREA OF MOSTLY LIGHT RAIN
WITH SOME EMBEDDED HEAVIER SHOWERS IS MOVING THROUGH ERN KS INTO
SWRN MO WHERE SFC TEMPERATURES ARE IN THE UPPER 20S TO NEAR 30 F.
THIS CORRIDOR OF PRECIPITATION IS DEVELOPING IN ASSOCIATION WITH
WARM ADVECTION AND ISENTROPIC ASCENT ALONG A WARM CONVEYOR BELT
ATTENDING A PROGRESSIVE SHORTWAVE TROUGH AND WILL CONTINUE TO EXPAND
NEWD DURING THE MORNING. A STRONG SWLY LLJ HAS CONTRIBUTED TO A
SIGNIFICANT WARM NOSE ALOFT ABOVE THE SUBFREEZING SFC LAYER AND WILL
RESULT IN PRECIPITATION FALLING AS FREEZING RAIN AS IT DEVELOPS
THROUGH MO THIS MORNING. WARM ADVECTION IN THE NEAR SFC LAYER WILL
BE OFFSET FOR A WHILE BY EVAPORATIVE COOLING AS PRECIPITATION
INITIALLY FALLS THROUGH DRY AIR. HOWEVER...AS THE NEAR SFC LAYER
BECOMES SATURATED...TEMPERATURES SHOULD GRADUALLY WARM ABOVE
FREEZING LATER THIS MORNING. FORECAST SOUNDINGS SHOW NEWD
DEVELOPMENT OF A SHALLOW UNSTABLE LAYER. SOME OF THE RAIN APPEARS
CONVECTIVE IN NATURE...SUGGESTING RAINFALL RATES /THOUGH GENERALLY
LIGHT/ COULD BE ENHANCED AT TIMES WITHIN THE CONVECTIVE ELEMENTS.
