MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0046
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0740 PM CST THU JAN 30 2014

AREAS AFFECTED...CO FRONT RANGE/NORTHEAST CO

CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

VALID 310140Z - 310615Z

SUMMARY...SNOW WILL STEADILY INCREASE THROUGH MID/LATE EVENING
ACROSS THE DENVER METRO VICINITY/I-25 URBAN CORRIDOR TO THE
NORTHEAST CO HIGH PLAINS. SNOW RATES WILL AT LEAST LOCALLY EXCEED 1
IN/HR FOR A MULTI-HOUR DURATION.

DISCUSSION...EARLY EVENING WATER VAPOR IMAGERY FEATURES A
FAST-MOVING/MODESTLY AMPLIFYING SHORTWAVE TROUGH OVER THE SOUTHERN
GREAT BASIN WITH A PRECEDING BAROCLINIC LEAF STRUCTURE EVIDENT.
DOWNSTREAM EASTWARD TRANSLATION OF THESE FEATURES/ASSOCIATED UVV AND
INCREASING ISENTROPIC ASCENT IN TANDEM WITH A FRONT RANGE/HIGH
PLAINS SLOPING FRONTAL ZONE WILL CONTINUE TO LEAD TO INCREASING
PRECIPITATION RATES THIS EVENING. SURFACE TEMPERATURES HAVE QUICKLY
COOLED TO AROUND/BELOW 32F ACROSS THE NORTHEAST CO HIGH PLAINS OVER
THE PAST FEW HOURS...AND WITH A NEAR-32F WET-BULB LOW-LEVEL PROFILE
EVIDENT PER THE 00Z DENVER OBSERVED SOUNDING...SNOW COULD BECOME
MORE DOMINANT/HEAVIER NEAR THE DENVER METRO/I-25 VICINITY AS
SATURATION CONTINUES TO OCCUR OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS. INCREASING
UVV/SATURATION COINCIDENT WITH AN APPROX 1KM DEEP DENDRITIC GROWTH
ZONE /ABOVE 700 MB/ SHOULD SUPPORT 1+ IN/HR SNOW RATES THROUGH
MID/LATE EVENING...INCLUDING THE DENVER METRO VICINITY AND OTHER
NORTHEAST CO AREAS ESPECIALLY NEAR/NORTH OF I-70 AND NEAR I-76.
