MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2085
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0237 AM CST SUN DEC 15 2013

AREAS AFFECTED...VT...NH AND MAINE

CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

VALID 150837Z - 151430Z

SUMMARY...HEAVY SNOW WITH RATES FROM 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR WILL
DEVELOP NWD THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF NRN ENGLAND THIS MORNING.

DISCUSSION...EARLY THIS MORNING A LARGE AREA OF MODERATE TO HEAVY
SNOW CONTINUES ACROSS MUCH OF NEW ENGLAND FROM MA NWD THROUGH
VT...NH AND SRN MAINE. THE SNOW IS DEVELOPING IN ASSOCIATION WITH A
COUPLED UPPER JET STRUCTURE WHERE THE ACCOMPANYING LLJ IS
CONTRIBUTING TO STRONG FRONTOGENETIC FORCING AND ISENTROPIC ASCENT
ALONG A SW-NE ORIENTED BAROCLINIC ZONE. THIS ZONE OF ASCENT EXTENDS
THROUGH LAYERS FAVORABLE FOR DENDRITIC SNOW GROWTH AND WILL DEVELOP
NWD THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF NEW ENGLAND INCLUDING MAINE DURING THE
MORNING. MOREOVER...STEEPENING LAPSE RATES IN THE 700-500 MB LAYER
WILL SUPPORT SOME CONVECTIVE ENHANCEMENT TO THE SNOWFALL WITH RATES
LOCALLY UP TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR. SIGNIFICANT WARM ADVECTION ABOVE
THE SFC LAYER ALONG WITH NEWD PROGRESSION OF MID-UPPER LEVEL DRY
SLOT SHOULD RESULT IN THE SNOW GRADUALLY CHANGING TO FREEZING RAIN
OR FREEZING DRIZZLE BEFORE ENDING ACROSS SRN NEW ENGLAND BY 12Z.
