EARLY AFTERNOON SATELLITE IMAGERY INDICATES SCATTERED LOW TOPPED
CONVECTION IN ASSOCIATION WITH UPPER VORT APPROACHING THE ORE/NRN CA
COAST. THIS CONVECTION APPEARS TO BE QUITE SHALLOW WITH MINIMAL
APPARENT GLACIATION. OBSERVATIONAL DATA SUGGESTS BUOYANCY ALONG THE
COAST IS MEAGER AT BEST. HOWEVER FORECAST SOUNDINGS FROM THE
GFS/NAM SUGGEST SUFFICIENT INSTABILITY WILL MOVE INLAND AHEAD OF
UPPER VORT FOR AT LEAST AN ISOLATED THREAT OF THUNDERSTORMS.
ALTHOUGH...COVERAGE WILL LIKELY BE LESS THAN EARLIER ANTICIPATED.

..NRN HIGH PLAINS/CNTRL ROCKIES...

DEEP CONVECTION WILL BE QUITE SPARSE THROUGH THE DAY2 PERIOD THOUGH
STRONG FRONTAL FORCING WILL RESULT IN MOISTENING/DESTABILIZATION
ALONG A CORRIDOR FROM WY INTO ND BY LATE AFTERNOON.
ADDITIONALLY...VERY STEEP LAPSE RATES WILL DEVELOP OFF THE HIGH
TERRAIN RESULTING IN SFC-BASED BUOYANCY ALONG ADVANCING WIND SHIFT.
FORECAST SOUNDINGS ACROSS THIS REGION SUGGEST ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS
ARE POSSIBLE...INITIALLY OVER NRN WY...THEN SPREADING/DEVELOPING
NEWD INTO ND. OTHER ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS COULD ALSO DEVELOP OVER
THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF WRN CO INTO SRN WY WHERE DEEPENING WLY FLOW
WILL BE OBSERVED IN ASSOCIATION WITH STRONG BAROCLINIC ZONE.
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY SHOULD BE STRONGLY DIURNAL...HOWEVER A FEW
THUNDERSTORMS COULD LINGER AFTER DARK ACROSS THE DAKOTAS WHERE WEAK
ELEVATED INSTABILITY WILL EXIST ALONG FRONTAL ZONE.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..PACIFIC NW INTO NRN ROCKIES...
LATEST MODEL GUIDANCE INDICATES THAT SIGNIFICANT HEIGHT FALLS /I.E.
120-150 M PER 12-HR/ WILL ACCOMPANY MIDLEVEL TROUGH EWD/SEWD THROUGH
THE PACIFIC NW INTO THE NRN ROCKIES AND GREAT BASIN. THIS DYNAMIC
COOLING COUPLED WITH OVERALL COLDNESS OF MIDLEVEL THERMAL TROUGH
/-30 TO -32 C AT 500 MB/ WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE STEEPENING OF LAPSE
RATES AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF WEAK CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY
TODAY...BOTH ALONG PACIFIC FRONT AND WITHIN MOIST...ONSHORE FLOW
ACROSS COASTAL ORE/WA. A FEW DEEPER CONVECTIVE ELEMENTS WILL BE
CAPABLE OF ISOLATED LIGHTNING STRIKES IN BOTH AREAS...MAINLY THIS
AFTERNOON INTO EVENING.

..CAROLINAS...
COMPACT MID/UPPER SYSTEM AND ASSOCIATED -10C TO -12C H7 COLD POCKET
WILL CONTINUE TO OVERSPREAD THE CAROLINAS THIS AFTERNOON.
HOWEVER...REGION WILL REMAIN UNDER INFLUENCE OF RELATIVELY COOL/DRY
CONTINENTAL AIR AT THE SURFACE IN WAKE OF COLD FRONT WHICH MOVED
OFFSHORE SUNDAY. ALTHOUGH LAPSE RATES WILL STEEPEN THIS AFTERNOON
AND SUPPORT INCREASE IN SHALLOW MOIST CONVECTION...MOISTURE APPEARS
TOO SCARCE FOR MUCH IF ANY INSTABILITY AND/OR MORE THAN SPORADIC
LIGHTNING STRIKES. HOWEVER...A FEW STRONGER GUSTS MAY OCCUR GIVEN
VERY STEEP LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES BENEATH THIS WEAK CONVECTION.

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0305 AM CDT MON APR 14 2008

VALID 171200Z - 221200Z

..DISCUSSION...
MODELS CONTINUE TO SUGGEST THAT A TROUGH/LOW WILL EJECT EWD INTO THE
SRN PLAINS THU. APR. 17 /DAY 4/...BUT DIFFERENCES EXIST WITH RESPECT
TO TIMING...INTENSITY...AND ORIENTATION OF THE FEATURE. THE
DIFFERENCES ARE MORE SIGNIFICANT AT THE SURFACE...WHERE THE GFS
DEPICTS A WEAK LOW/FRONT ACROSS CENTRAL OK BY LATE AFTERNOON...WHILE
THE ECMWF SHOWS THE FRONT ROUGHLY 100 MILES FURTHER SE.

IN ADDITION TO THE MODEL DIFFERENCES WITH RESPECT TO THE
SYNOPTIC-SCALE FEATURES...DEGREE OF SEVERE THREAT IS ALSO A QUESTION
ATTM...WITH ONLY MODEST MOISTURE ANTICIPATED IN THE BOUNDARY
LAYER...BENEATH A FAIRLY STOUT CAP. ALL IN ALL...CONFIDENCE REMAINS
TOO LOW THIS FORECAST TO INTRODUCE A THREAT AREA...BUT IT APPEARS
ATTM THAT AT LEAST A LOW-PROBABILITY SEVERE THREAT WILL BE REQUIRED
OVER PORTIONS OF THE SRN PLAINS IN LATER FORECASTS.

BEYOND DAY 4...MODEL DIFFERENCES INCREASE IN MAGNITUDE...AND THUS
WILL NOT ATTEMPT TO HIGHLIGHT ANY THREAT AREAS FOR LATER IN THE
PERIOD.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1236 AM CDT MON APR 14 2008

VALID 161200Z - 171200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
WRN UPPER TROUGH -- CENTERED OVER THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST AT THE
START OF THE PERIOD -- IS FORECAST TO CONTINUE PROGRESSING EWD THIS
PERIOD...AND IS EXPECTED TO EXTEND FROM THE NRN PLAINS TO THE SRN
ROCKIES BY 17/12Z. MEANWHILE...ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT WILL CONTINUE
MOVING SEWD ACROSS THE PLAINS...WITH LEE CYCLOGENESIS FORECAST TO
OCCUR ALONG THE FRONT INVOF THE SRN HIGH PLAINS DURING THE
AFTERNOON. BY THE END OF THE PERIOD...THE FRONT SHOULD STRETCH FROM
THE UPPER GREAT LAKES SWWD TO A LOW IN WRN OK/WRN N TX...AND THEN ON
SWWD ACROSS FAR W TX.

MEAGER BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE COMBINED WITH STRONG CAPPING IS
EXPECTED TO PRECLUDE ANY WARM-SECTOR STORMS THIS PERIOD.
THUNDERSTORMS MAY DEVELOP N OF THE FRONT ACROSS KS -- WITHIN ZONE OF
WARM ADVECTION ASSOCIATED WITH INTENSIFYING LOW-LEVEL JET. WHILE
FAIRLY STEEP LAPSE RATES ALOFT AND MID-LEVEL SWLYS NEAR 50 KT MAY
SUPPORT A FEW STRONGER ELEVATED STORMS...ATTM HAIL THREAT APPEARS
SUFFICIENTLY MARGINAL TO PRECLUDE THE INTRODUCTION OF A 5% SEVERE
AREA THIS FORECAST.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1234 AM CDT MON APR 14 2008

VALID 151200Z - 161200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
PROGRESSIVE/AMPLIFIED UPPER PATTERN TO CONTINUE THIS PERIOD...WITH
ONE TROUGH MOVING TOWARD/OFF THE ATLANTIC COAST...AND A SECOND
MOVING ACROSS THE WEST.

AT THE SURFACE...A COLD FRONT -- ASSOCIATED WITH THE WRN UPPER
TROUGH -- IS FORECAST TO MOVE ACROSS THE ROCKIES AND INTO THE NRN
AND CENTRAL PLAINS THROUGH THE END OF THE PERIOD.

SHOWERS AND A FEW EMBEDDED LIGHTNING STRIKES ARE FORECAST TO SPREAD
ACROSS THE NRN ROCKIES IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE UPPER TROUGH...AND
OTHER ISOLATED SHOWERS/A FEW LIGHTNING STRIKES MAY OCCUR WITHIN A
ZONE OF WARM ADVECTION POSSIBLY DEVELOPING LATE ACROSS ERN ND/NRN MN
AND VICINITY. HOWEVER...MEAGER INSTABILITY SUGGESTS THAT ANY
CONVECTION WILL REMAIN WEAK.

ELSEWHERE...THUNDERSTORMS ARE NOT ANTICIPATED.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1230 AM CDT MON APR 14 2008

VALID 141200Z - 151200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...

A HIGHLY AMPLIFIED PATTERN WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE DAY ONE
PERIOD...FEATURING FULL LATITUDE TROUGH IN THE E AND INTENSIFYING
SHORT WAVE TROUGH WHICH WILL MOVE INTO PACIFIC NW AND NRN ROCKIES.
IN THE LOW LEVELS...COLD FRONT ATTENDANT TO PACIFIC NW TROUGH
INITIALLY FROM THE ID PNHDL SWWD INTO N-CNTRL CA WILL SHIFT EWD
THROUGH THE NRN ROCKIES...AND MORE SEWD INTO THE GREAT BASIN.

..PACIFIC NW INTO NRN ROCKIES...
