AREAS AFFECTED...NRN CT...CNTRL AND WRN MA...EXTRM SE VT...SRN NH

CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

VALID 140430Z - 140930Z

..HEAVY SNOW WITH RATES OF 1 TO 2 INCHES...OCCASIONALLY 3 INCHES
PER HOUR BEGINNING BY 05 UTC AND SPREADING NORTHEAST ACROSS AREA
THROUGH 12 UTC...

INITIALLY COOL AND DRY LOW LEVELS THAT WERE SLIGHTLY ABOVE FREEZING
WILL COOL TO AT OR BELOW FREEZING AS PRECIPITATION SOUTHWEST OF THE
AREA OVERSPREADS THE AREA. STRONG EAST TO EAST/NORTHEAST LOW LEVEL
FLOW SHOULD REINFORCE THE WET BULB TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW FREEZING
THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS AS SURFACE LOW INITIALLY JUST OFFSHORE
OF MARYLAND/DELAWARE INTENSIFIES AND MOVES TO JUST OFF CAPE COD BY
12 UTC. MAXIMUM FRONTOGENETICAL FORCING WILL BECOME CENTERED ACROSS
THIS AREA IN THE 850 TO 700 MB LAYER WITH VERY STRONG/MOIST ASCENT.
RUC TEMPERATURE AND WET-BULB CROSS-SECTIONS MAINTAIN A RAPID
TRANSITION ZONE FROM RAIN IN SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL CONNECTICUT TO
SNOW FURTHER NORTH AND EAST. PROXIMITY OF FORECAST ELEVATED CAPE
ROOTED IN 900 TO 850 MB LAYER...OF AROUND 50 J/KG IMMEDIATELY
SOUTHEAST OF THIS AREA...MAY RESULT IN HEAVIER SNOW RATES OF 3
INCHES PER HOUR IN CONVECTIVE BANDS WITH OCCASIONAL
THUNDER/LIGHTNING. SNOWFALL RATES SHOULD PEAK AROUND 08 TO 09 UTC
WITH MAXIMUM FORCING AND ONLY TAPER OFF SLOWLY THROUGH 12 UTC. TO
THE EAST AND SOUTH OF THE AREA...EXPECT MAINLY RAIN AS TEMPERATURES
ARE FORECAST TO REMAIN ABOVE FREEZING.

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0320 AM CST SUN JAN 13 2008

VALID 161200Z - 211200Z

..DISCUSSION...
MEDIUM RANGE MODELS CONTINUE TO INDICATE THAT A FULL LATITUDE TROUGH
WILL EVOLVE ACROSS THE CENTRAL PORTIONS OF THE COUNTRY
WED/THU...THOUGH DETAILS CONCERNING THE EWD PROGRESSION OF THE
LONGWAVE TROUGH HAVE SHOWN GREAT VARIABILITY BETWEEN TO DIFFERENT
MODELS AND PREVIOUS RUNS.

LATEST GFS/MREF SOLUTIONS ARE MORE PROGRESSIVE AND CONTAIN WEAKER
SHORTWAVE ENERGY IN THE BASE OF THE TROUGH THAN THE EURO. PREFER THE
EURO SOLUTION AS BUILDING RIDGE IN THE ERN PACIFIC WOULD FAVOR
STRONGER WINDS ON BACKSIDE OF EVOLVING LONGWAVE TROUGH AND A SLOWER
AND MORE AMPLIFIED SYSTEM. GFS SURFACE LOW INTENSITY ON JAN 17TH
APPEARS OVERDONE WITH SHORTWAVE TROUGH MINORING OUT ACROSS THE SERN
STATES...THOUGH GFS WOULD FAVOR A SEVERE POTENTIAL OVER THE FL
PENINSULA ON DAY 5. HOWEVER...MUCH SLOWER EURO INDICATES MAIN SEVERE
POTENTIAL WOULD WAIT UNTIL DAY 7 AND/OR 8 AND IS MORE LIKELY FROM
THE NRN FL PANHANDLE NWD INTO ERN NC.

GIVEN THAT THIS EVOLVING TROUGH IS STILL LOCATED WELL WEST OF
BRITISH COLUMBIA AND THE RUN-TO-RUN AND MODEL-TO-MODEL
INCONSISTENCIES...CONFIDENCE FOR TIMING/LOCATION OF POSSIBLE SEVERE
STORM EVENT FOR LATER THIS WEEK IS TOO LOW TO OUTLOOK ATTM.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
ACTIVE TRAIN OF STRONG SHORTWAVE TROUGHS WILL CONTINUE TO MIGRATE
E/SEWD ACROSS THE COUNTRY THIS FORECAST PERIOD. ONE OF THESE TROUGHS
WILL BE EJECTED FROM THE OHIO/MS VALLEYS EWD TO THE ERN
SEABOARD...IN RESPONSE TO A STRONGER SYSTEM DIGGING SEWD FROM THE
PACIFIC NW/NRN ROCKIES INTO THE NRN PLAINS/CENTRAL ROCKIES. THIS
SECOND SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO EVOLVE INTO A HIGHLY AMPLIFIED LONGWAVE
TROUGH OVER THE CENTRAL U.S. WED/THU.

ALTHOUGH A COLD FRONT WILL ACCOMPANY THE NRN PLAINS/ROCKIES TROUGH
..EXITING ERN U.S. TROUGH SHOULD MAINTAIN SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE
ACROSS THE GULF COASTAL STATES AND MOST OF THE GULF OF MEXICO. GIVEN
THAT COOL...STABLE AND DRY CONDITIONS WILL PERSIST ACROSS THE CONUS

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1145 PM CST SAT JAN 12 2008

VALID 141200Z - 151200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
LONGWAVE TROUGH WILL REMAIN SITUATED ACROSS THE ERN HALF OF THE
NATION ON MONDAY...WHILE AN INTENSE AND STRONGLY NEGATIVELY TILTED
SHORTWAVE ON THE ERN SIDE OF THE LARGER SCALE TROUGH EJECTS FROM SRN
NY NEWD TO EAST OF MAINE. A DEEPENING CYCLONE WILL ACCOMPANY THE
UPPER SYSTEM...BUT IS FORECAST TO REMAIN OFFSHORE AS IT ALSO SHIFTS
NEWD DURING THE PERIOD.

..SERN NEW ENGLAND...
THE COMBINATION OF LARGE SCALE LIFT ASSOCIATED WITH SHORTWAVE TROUGH
AND EXIT REGION OF A 100 KT MID LEVEL JET WILL RESULT IN STEEPENING
LAPSE RATES...AND MUCAPES PERHAPS UP TO 50 J/KG. DESPITE THE
LIKELIHOOD OF WINTER PCPN...THE ELEVATED INSTABILITY MAY SUPPORT A
FEW LIGHTING STRIKES...MAINLY ACROSS RI AND FAR ERN MA DURING THE
MORNING HOURS...BEFORE STRONGER FORCING MOVES OFFSHORE.

..PACIFIC NW/NRN ROCKIES...
ANOTHER INTENSE AND COLD SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL DROP SEWD INTO THE
PACIFIC NW/NRN ROCKIES LATE IN THE PERIOD. WIDESPREAD PCPN IS
EXPECTED IN ASSOCIATION WITH THIS SYSTEM...BUT FORECAST SOUNDINGS
INDICATE MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES WOULD NOT SUPPORT DEEP ENOUGH
CONVECTION FOR LIGHTNING.

THE REST OF THE NATION WILL BE COVERED BY SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE...
WHICH WILL LIMIT CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT.
