SWODY1
SPC AC 160041

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0741 PM CDT TUE MAR 15 2011

VALID 160100Z - 161200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...PACIFIC NW...
BROAD UPPER CYCLONIC FLOW REGIME WILL PERSIST ACROSS THE REGION
DURING THE NIGHT. COLD MIDLEVEL TEMPERATURES /AOB -20C AT 500 MB/
WILL MAINTAIN STEEP MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES...WHILE 60+ KT W-SWLY FLOW
AT 6 KM AGL FAVORS SUFFICIENT DEEP LAYER SHEAR FOR STRONG/SVR
THUNDERSTORMS. HOWEVER...BOUNDARY LAYER AIRMASS HAS COOLED AND
STABILIZED...WHICH HAS GREATLY REDUCED THE POTENTIAL FOR
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT AND SUBSEQUENT SVR WEATHER.

...PORTIONS OF GA AND CAROLINAS...SERN VA...
A FEW THUNDERSTORMS HAVE SHOWN SIGNS OF UPDRAFT ROTATION OVER CNTRL
GA DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON/EVENING. THIS ACTIVITY MAY SPREAD NEWD
DURING THE NIGHT AS DE-AMPLIFYING UPPER TROUGH MOVES E-NEWD ACROSS
THE OH VALLEY...AND WEAK SURFACE WAVE PROGRESSES ALONG BAROCLINIC
ZONE ALIGNED PARALLEL TO THE CAROLINAS/VA FALL LINE. AS THIS
OCCURS...MID 50S SURFACE DEWPOINTS WILL BE DRAWN ONSHORE FROM THE
ATLANTIC...CONTRIBUTING TO WEAK MUCAPE VALUES. THIS INSTABILITY
COULD BECOME JUXTAPOSED WITH STRONG LOW AND DEEP-LAYER VERTICAL
SHEAR PROFILES...POSSIBLY YIELDING AN ISOLATED ORGANIZED/ROTATING
THUNDERSTORM. HOWEVER...COMBINATION OF STRONGEST LARGE-SCALE ASCENT
MOVING AWAY FROM THE REGION...WEAK CYCLOGENETIC RESPONSE AT THE
SURFACE...AND POOR LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT...SUGGESTS THE SVR THREAT
IS TOO MARGINAL TO INTRODUCE SVR WEATHER PROBABILITIES.

THUNDERSTORMS WILL GRADUALLY INCREASE IN COVERAGE OVER PORTIONS OF
THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST THIS AFTERNOON...WITH ISOLATED DMGG
WINDS...SMALL HAIL...AND PERHAPS A BRIEF TORNADO POSSIBLE.

20Z WV IMAGERY SHOWS THE LEADING EDGE OF STRONGER ASCENT JUST
BEGINNING TO IMPINGE OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST. THUNDERSTORM
COVERAGE IS GRADUALLY INCREASING OFFSHORE AND ALONG THE IMMEDIATE
COAST AS ASSOCIATED LAPSE RATES BEGIN TO INCREASE. PATCHES OF
CLEARING EVIDENT OF VISIBLE IMAGERY HAS LED TO WEAK DESTABILIZATION
AS WEAK SURFACE HEATING OCCURS...AND AFOREMENTIONED LAPSE RATES
CONTINUE TO STEEPEN...PARTICULARLY IN A CORRIDOR FROM NWRN ORE/SWRN
WA INTO CNTRL WA. CONVERGENT SURFACE WIND FIELDS ALONG THE COAST AND
WEAK SURFACE PRESSURE FALLS SUGGEST A SURFACE TROUGH THAT WILL FAVOR
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT...WITH ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT POSSIBLE IN
UPSLOPE FLOW. ALTHOUGH INSTABILITY IS WEAK...STRONG UNIDIRECTIONAL
SHEAR PROFILES /50 KTS JUST ABOVE THE SURFACE IN AREA VAD WIND
PROFILE DATA/ WILL SUPPORT SMALL BOWING SEGMENTS CAPABLE OF DMGG
WINDS...WHILE COMPLEX TERRAIN AND LOCALIZED BACKED SURFACE WINDS MAY
SUPPORT BRIEFLY ROTATING STORMS/AN ISOLATED TORNADO. AS LAPSE RATES
CONTINUE TO STEEPEN...SMALL HAIL MAY BECOME POSSIBLE. GIVEN THE WEAK
INSTABILITY AND ISOLATED NATURE OF EXPECTED SEVERE STORMS...A WW IS
NOT ANTICIPATED. HOWEVER...TRENDS WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED.

...PACIFIC NW...

THE EXIT REGION OF AN INTENSE UPPER-LEVEL JET STREAK OVER THE ERN
PACIFIC WILL DEVELOP INLAND DURING THE D1 PERIOD...ADVANCING THROUGH
NRN CA/SRN ORE ENEWD TO THE NRN HIGH PLAINS BY WED MORNING. A
SHORT-WAVE TROUGH LOCATED ON THE CYCLONIC SIDE OF UPPER JET IS
FORECAST TO REACH THE WA/ORE COASTS BY 16/00Z...CONTRIBUTING TO A
DOWNSTREAM CORRIDOR OF SIGNIFICANT HEIGHT FALLS/DYNAMIC FORCING FOR
ASCENT WHICH WILL PROGRESSIVELY OVERSPREAD THE REGION TODAY.

EARLY VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY INDICATES THAT WIDESPREAD CLOUDINESS
WILL LIMIT THE DEGREE OF DIABATIC HEATING WITHIN THE BOUNDARY LAYER.
HOWEVER...SUBSTANTIAL MIDLEVEL COOLING AND RESULTANT STEEPENING OF
LAPSE RATES WILL RESULT IN WEAK AIR MASS DESTABILIZATION /I.E.
MLCAPE VALUES OF 100-200 J PER KG/ LATER TODAY FROM THE COAST INLAND
TOWARD THE COLUMBIA BASIN. GIVEN THE STRONG...LARGELY
UNIDIRECTIONAL WSWLY DEEP-LAYER SHEAR FORECAST...THE POTENTIAL WILL
EXIST FOR EMBEDDED BOWING STRUCTURES CAPABLE OF LOCALLY STRONG WIND
GUSTS...SOME HAIL AND PERHAPS A BRIEF TORNADO. THIS SEVERE WEATHER
POTENTIAL IS EXPECTED TO DIMINISH BY MID/LATE EVENING AS THE
BOUNDARY LAYER COOLS/STABILIZES.

...ERN GULF COAST INTO MID ATLANTIC STATES...

MIDLEVEL LOW OVER THE LOWER OH VALLEY THIS MORNING WILL WEAKEN
CONSIDERABLY OVER THE NEXT 24-HR WHILE LIFTING NEWD THROUGH THE
UPPER OH VALLEY WITHIN BROADER CYCLONIC FLOW REGIME IN PLACE OVER
THE ERN THIRD OF THE NATION. ASSOCIATED SURFACE LOW WILL LIKEWISE
WEAKEN WHILE TRAVERSING SAME GENERAL AREA WITH TRAILING COLD FRONT
ADVANCING TOWARD THE ATLANTIC COAST. WEDGE FRONT SITUATED ACROSS
CNTRL PARTS OF GA/SC AS OF LATE MORNING WILL RETREAT
NWD...POTENTIALLY REACHING THE TIDEWATER REGION LATE TONIGHT.

BASED ON CURRENT VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY AND LATEST MODEL
GUIDANCE...IT APPEARS THAT DIURNAL TSTM DEVELOPMENT WILL REMAIN
FAVORED WITHIN NARROW AXIS OF RELATIVELY HIGHER THETA-E AIR IN PLACE
AHEAD OF COLD FRONT OVER SERN AL...THE FL PNHDL INTO SRN /AND
EVENTUALLY/ CNTRL GA. GIVEN THE WEAK LAPSE RATES AND MARGINAL
BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE CONTENT...NO SEVERE WEATHER IS EXPECTED.
THEREAFTER...SOME POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR TSTM DEVELOPMENT ALONG
RETREATING WEDGE FRONT OVER THE TIDEWATER AREA LATER TONIGHT INTO
WED MORNING. MODEL GUIDANCE CONTINUES TO SUGGEST THAT THE STRONGER
FORCING FOR ASCENT AND MORE FAVORABLE VERTICAL SHEAR WILL REMAIN
DISPLACED TO THE N OF WHERE ANY WEAK SURFACE-BASED INSTABILITY MAY
DEVELOP.
