MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1720
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1041 PM CDT WED AUG 18 2010

AREAS AFFECTED...WI MI

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 190341Z - 190545Z

TSTMS MAY BECOME MORE NUMEROUS ACROSS PORTIONS OF NRN WI AND
ADJACENT AREAS OF THE UPPER PENINSULA OF MI OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS
WITH SOME STORMS POSSIBLY CONTAINING HAIL AND STRONG WINDS. THE AREA
OF CONCERN WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED BUT LATEST INDICATIONS
SUGGEST THAT SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL AND STORM COVERAGE WILL NOT
REQUIRE A WATCH.

WITH THE ONSET OF NIGHTTIME AND THE GRADUAL STRENGTHENING OF THE LOW
LEVEL JET...LIFT ACROSS THE QUASI-STATIONARY FRONT SITUATED ACROSS
NCNTRL WI WAS INCREASING. DEEPER ASCENT AND CONTINUED
DESTABILIZATION ABOVE THE STABLE BOUNDARY LAYER WILL LIKELY BE
ENHANCED BY A SUBTLE AND LOW AMPLITUDE MID LEVEL DISTURBANCE
SPREADING SEWD ACROSS MN ATTM. AIR PARCEL TRAJECTORIES BEING LIFTED
ACROSS THE FRONT ORIGINATE WITHIN VERY MOIST/UNSTABLE AND CAPPED
WARM SECTOR AIRMASS SAMPLED BY EARLIER SOUNDINGS AT MPX AND ABR.
GIVEN STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND STRONG EFFECTIVE SHEAR ON THE
ORDER OF 50KT...STORMS WILL HAVE SOME TENDENCY TO PERSIST AND
POSSIBLY GROW UPSCALE ALONG AND NORTH OF THE FRONT OVER THE NEXT FEW
HOURS.

THIS SCENARIO IS SUPPORTED BY LATEST SHORT-TERM NUMERICAL GUIDANCE
INCLUDING THE WRF-HRRR AND LATEST WRF-NMM. ALTHOUGH...THESE MODELS
ALSO SUGGEST THAT STORMS WILL LIKELY REMAIN SOMEWHAT DECOUPLED FROM
THE MORE UNSTABLE BOUNDARY LAYER TO THE SOUTH AND WILL MOVE QUICKLY
AWAY FROM THIS SOURCE REGION OF GREATER INSTABILITY THROUGH THE
NIGHT. THUS...WHILE SOME HAIL/WIND POTENTIAL MAY DEVELOP AND STORMS
SHOULD INCREASE IN COVERAGE FROM WI ACROSS THE U.P. OF MI...THE
OVERALL SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL FROM THIS ACTIVITY WILL LIKELY
REMAIN QUITE ISOLATED.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 190056
SWODY1
SPC AC 190054

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0754 PM CDT WED AUG 18 2010

VALID 190100Z - 191200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS TONIGHT ACROSS PARTS THE NRN
PLAINS INTO THE UPPER MS VALLEY...

...NORTHERN PLAINS INTO THE GREAT LAKES...
WITHIN THE STRONGER BELT OF WESTERLIES...BROAD UPPER TROUGHING
CONTINUES TO SLOWLY DEVELOP EASTWARD THROUGH THE HUDSON BAY REGION
AND ADJACENT EASTERN CANADIAN PROVINCES. ON THE SOUTHERN PERIPHERY
OF THIS CYCLONIC REGIME...A SHORT WAVE IMPULSE IS PROGRESSING
EASTWARD ACROSS WISCONSIN...ACCOMPANIED BY WEAK MID-LEVEL HEIGHT
FALLS WHICH APPEAR LIKELY TO SPREAD ACROSS LOWER MICHIGAN LATER
TONIGHT. ANOTHER IMPULSE IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE DIGGING OUT OF
MANITOBA THROUGH NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO...BUT WEAK MID-LEVEL HEIGHT
RISES ARE PROGGED TO SPREAD ACROSS THE DAKOTAS INTO THE UPPER
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY OVERNIGHT...DOWNSTREAM OF AN UPPER TROUGH
MIGRATING ACROSS THE NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION...WITHIN A WEAKER
BELT OF WESTERLIES ACROSS THE NORTHERN TIER STATES.

GIVEN THIS SCENARIO...CONVECTIVE POTENTIAL ACROSS THE REGION THROUGH
THE REMAINDER OF THE PERIOD REMAINS UNCLEAR. SOUTH OF A COLD FRONT
ADVANCING SOUTHWARD THROUGH THE UPPER GREAT LAKES/UPPER MISSISSIPPI
VALLEY AND NORTHERN PLAINS...CAPE IS MAXIMIZED NORTH AND EAST OF A
THERMAL LOW OVER SOUTH CENTRAL SOUTH DAKOTA...ON THE NOSE OF
ELEVATED MIXED LAYER AIR AS FAR EAST AS WESTERN/SOUTHERN MINNESOTA.
STRONGEST LOW-LEVEL CONVERGENCE THIS EVENING APPEARS LIKELY TO
BECOME FOCUSED ON THE NOSE OF A NOCTURNALLY STRENGTHENING LOW-LEVEL
JET...ACROSS EASTERN SOUTH DAKOTA...WHERE THE 19/00Z RAOB FROM
ABERDEEN SUGGESTS MID-LEVEL INHIBITION REMAINS LARGE. IT MAY VERY
WELL BE THAT ANY APPRECIABLE INCREASE IN CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT...IF
AT ALL...AWAITS LOW-LEVEL JET VEERING LATER THIS EVENING/
OVERNIGHT...WHEN STRONGER LOW-LEVEL FORCING DEVELOPS EAST OF
STRONGER MID-LEVEL INHIBITION...ACROSS SOUTHERN MINNESOTA AND
ADJACENT NORTHERN IOWA...PERHAPS INTO WESTERN WISCONSIN. IF FORCING
IS STRONG ENOUGH TO OVERCOME CAP...THE ENVIRONMENT APPEARS FAVORABLE
FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MESOSCALE CONVECTIVE SYSTEM CAPABLE OF
PRODUCING DAMAGING WINDS AND LARGE HAIL.

OTHERWISE...HIGHER THUNDERSTORM PROBABILITIES TONIGHT SEEM TO EXIST
ALONG THE FRONTAL ZONE FARTHER TO THE NORTH/EAST...ACROSS PARTS OF
NORTHERN/CENTRAL WISCONSIN...THE UPPER PENINSULA OF MICHIGAN AND
NORTHWESTERN LOWER MICHIGAN. WHILE SEVERE POTENTIAL APPEARS MORE
LIMITED DUE TO MUCH MORE MODEST INSTABILITY... THERMODYNAMIC AND
KINEMATIC PARAMETERS MAY STILL BECOME SUFFICIENT FOR VIGOROUS
CONVECTION WITH GUSTY WINDS AND SOME HAIL.

MESO: Mesoscale Discussion 1719

ACUS11 KWNS 190028
SWOMCD
SPC MCD 190028
UTZ000-NVZ000-190230-

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1719
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0728 PM CDT WED AUG 18 2010

AREAS AFFECTED...NV UT

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 190028Z - 190230Z

A NUMBER OF STRONG STORMS SHOULD PERSIST INTO THE EVENING HOURS
ACROSS PORTIONS OF SRN NV AND ADJACENT AREAS OF SW UT. A FEW OF
THESE STORMS COULD PRODUCE LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS AS WELL AS VERY
HEAVY RAIN. STORM ORGANIZATION AND DURATION OF SEVERE THREAT DOES
NOT APPEAR TO WARRANT A WATCH.

VORT MAX ROTATING AROUND THE WRN PERIPHERY OF THE MID/UPPER LEVEL
RIDGE CENTERED ACROSS NM/UT...COUPLED WITH WEAK HEIGHT FALLS
ASSOCIATED WITH MID LATITUDE TROUGH MOVING INTO CA/NV...APPEAR TO BE
THE IMPETUS FOR RELATIVELY WIDESPREAD TSTM DEVELOPMENT NEAR THE
NV/UT BORDER AREA OVER THE LAST FEW HOURS. THIS DEVELOPMENT HAS
GENERATED A WELL DEFINED COLD POOL WITH AN ARC OF MARGINALLY
ORGANIZED OUTFLOW AIDING NEW STORM DEVELOPMENT IN WEAKLY UNSTABLE
AND UNCAPPED AIRMASS. MID LEVEL FLOW ACROSS THE REGION IS GENERALLY
LESS THAN 20KT PER AREA PROFILERS THUS EXPECT THE ONGOING ACTIVITY
TO REMAIN MULTICELLULAR IN NATURE.

ISOLATED PULSE STORMS HAVE BEEN INITIATING BETWEEN THE WEAK MCS AND
NORTH OF THE LAS VEGAS AREA WHERE A HOT AND DEEPLY MIXED BOUNDARY
LAYER WILL SUPPORT EVAPORATIVE COOLING BELOW THE CLOUD BASES AND A
CHANCE FOR DAMAGING WINDS. ADDITIONALLY...DEEP-LAYER MOISTURE /PW
VALUES IN EXCESS OF 1.00 INCH/...AND GENERALLY WEAK FLOW REGIME
SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE POTENTIAL FOR VERY HEAVY RAINFALL FROM
STORM MERGERS AND REPEAT STORM DEVELOPMENT/INITIATION ON RESIDUAL
COLD POOLS AND OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES ACROSS THE AREA.

OVERALL SEVERE TSTM WIND POTENTIAL SHOULD REMAIN QUITE ISOLATED AND
BECOME LESS LIKELY WITH TIME AND A WATCH IS NOT ANTICIPATED.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1718

AREAS AFFECTED...SWRN AND S-CNTRL MT

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 182322Z - 190015Z

INCREASING THUNDERSTORM COVERAGE WITHIN A WEAKLY UNSTABLE AND
MODERATELY SHEARED ENVIRONMENT WILL LEAD TO A THREAT FOR SEVERE
WIND/HAIL. DUE TO THE EXPECTED ISOLATED NATURE...A WW IS NOT
ANTICIPATED.

A BAND OF FORCED ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH A MID-LEVEL IMPULSE NEAR THE
ID/MT BORDER CONTINUES TO SPREAD EWD INTO SWRN/S-CNTRL MT...WHERE
THE ENVIRONMENT HAS BECOME WEAKLY UNSTABLE. ENHANCED MID-LEVEL FLOW
ACROSS THIS REGION HAS RESULTED IN SUFFICIENT EFFECTIVE SHEAR
/AROUND 40-50 KTS/ TO PRODUCE ROTATING THUNDERSTORMS. CURRENT
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY GENERALLY APPEARS TO BE ANCHORED NEAR/ALONG
THE HIGHER TERRAIN...BUT STORMS SHOULD BE MAINTAINED WITH EWD
PROGRESSION. THE BOUNDARY LAYER REMAINS RELATIVELY DRY /SFC DEW
POINTS GENERALLY IN THE 40S/...AND WITH THE PRESENCE OF STEEP
LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND HIGH CLOUD BASES...THE PRIMARY THREAT WITH
THESE STORMS WILL LIKELY BE STRONG WINDS. A LACK OF SUBSTANTIAL
INSTABILITY SHOULD LIMIT A MORE ROBUST THREAT FOR LARGE HAIL...BUT
THE POTENTIAL WILL STILL EXIST WITH ANY PERSISTENT ROTATING STORMS.
