NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

AREAS AFFECTED...TX/OK PANHANDLE / TX S PLAINS / EXTREME SWRN KS

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 052058Z - 052200Z

CONVECTIVE TRENDS WILL BE MONITORED AS DEVELOPING TSTMS MOVE EWD
FROM NM INTO TX. A GRADUAL INCREASE IN A LARGE HAIL/DMGG WIND
THREAT MAY OCCUR TOWARDS THE LATE AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING HOURS.

POTENTIAL FOR MORE WIDESPREAD ISOLD STRONG/SEVERE STORMS APPEARS TO
BE DELAYED UNTIL CONVECTION MOVES INTO MORE MOISTURE RICH AIRMASS
ALONG/E OF DIFFUSE DRYLINE/LEE PRESSURE TROUGH LOCATED N-S ALONG THE
TX/NM BORDER. RECENTLY DEVELOPED SURFACE-BASED TSTMS NEAR GUY WILL
PROBABLY REMAIN CAPABLE OF LARGE HAIL/DMGG WINDS IN THE NEXT HOUR
BEFORE MORE ACTIVITY AND CORRESPONDING UPWARD TREND IN SEVERE
POTENTIAL COMMENCES AS CONVECTION MOVES FROM ERN NM INTO TX.

25-35 KT H5 FLOW OBSERVED RECENTLY AT AMA/FDX/TCU VWP/S ATOP
GENERALLY SLY SURFACE FLOW YIELDS A SUPPORTIVE SUPERCELL WIND
PROFILE. PRESENCE OF STEEP LOW-MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES IN COMBINATION
WITH A DESTABILIZING AIRMASS /WEAKENING CINH/ WILL LIKELY LEAD TO
MORE VIGOROUS SURFACE-BASED CONVECTION CAPABLE OF ISOLD LARGE
HAIL/DMGG WINDS AS STORMS MORE INTO MORE MOIST LOW LEVEL AIRMASS.

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 052018Z - 052145Z

TRENDS ARE BEING MONITORED FOR AN INCREASING SEVERE THREAT. TIMING
OF MORE VIGOROUS STORM DEVELOPMENT IS A BIT UNCERTAIN ...BUT A
TORNADO WW MAY BE REQUIRED WITHIN THE NEXT HOUR OR TWO.

A VEIL OF MID/HIGH LEVEL CLOUD COVER ASSOCIATED WITH FAVORABLE
LARGE-SCALE ASCENT DOWNSTREAM OF THE CLOSED LOW/UPPER TROUGH OVER
THE WESTERN U.S. HAS SLOWED SURFACE HEATING ALONG AND TO THE LEE OF
THE FRONT RANGE. BUT...SURFACE DEW POINTS CONTINUE TO SLOWLY CLIMB
THROUGH THE MID 50S WITHIN A SOUTHEASTERLY LOW-LEVEL UPSLOPE REGIME
ACROSS THE HIGH PLAINS. AND...CONVECTION HAS RECENTLY INITIATED
ALONG THE LARAMIE MOUNTAINS. THIS ACTIVITY MAY BE SUPPORTED BY A
WEAK IMPULSE PROGRESSING THROUGH THE CREST OF THE LARGER SCALE RIDGE
ACROSS THE CENTRAL ROCKIES...WHICH SHOULD CONTINUE EASTWARD...THEN
SOUTHEASTWARD TO THE LEE OF THE HIGHER TERRAIN LATER THIS AFTERNOON
AND EVENING. THIS FORCING COUPLED WITH CONTINUED SLOW SURFACE
HEATING AND MOISTENING PROBABLY WILL WEAKEN INHIBITION SUFFICIENTLY
FOR INCREASING SCATTERED STORM DEVELOPMENT OFF THE HIGHER TERRAIN
THROUGH THE 22-00Z TIME FRAME.

VEERING WIND PROFILES WITH HEIGHT BENEATH 30-50+ KT WESTERLY MID/
HIGH LEVEL FLOW WILL BE FAVORABLE SUPERCELLS IN THE PRESENCE OF
STEEP LAPSE RATES AND MIXED LAYER CAPE OF 1000-2000 J/KG. ALTHOUGH
LOW-LEVEL HODOGRAPHS ARE STILL SOMEWHAT WEAK...MODEL GUIDANCE
SUGGESTS THAT THEY WILL BECOME MORE CONDUCIVE FOR TORNADOES TOWARD
EARLY EVENING.

DAY2SVR: Nws Storm Prediction Center Norman Ok

ACUS02 KWNS 051732
SWODY2
SPC AC 051730

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1230 PM CDT FRI JUN 05 2009

VALID 061200Z - 071200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE CENTRAL
PLAINS/MIDDLE MO VALLEY...

...MIDDLE MO VALLEY/CENTRAL PLAINS TO UPPER MS VALLEY...
EARLY DAY HEIGHT FALLS ARE ANTICIPATED ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS ON
SATURDAY...WITH PERTURBED WEST-SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW ALOFT IN
ASSOCIATION WITH A SHORTWAVE TROUGH EXPECTED TO CROSS THE NORTH
CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS. AS THIS OCCURS...SURFACE COLD FRONT IS EXPECTED
TO MOVE SOUTHWARD ACROSS NEB/IA DURING THE DAY...WITH A SURFACE LOW
ACROSS WESTERN KS AND A ROUGHLY NORTH-SOUTH ORIENTED DRYLINE ACROSS
WEST CENTRAL KS INTO SOUTHERN NEB.

A STRENGTHENING ELEVATED MIXED LAYER/STRONG CAP PUTS THE COVERAGE OF
PRE-DARK SURFACE BASED TSTMS A BIT IN QUESTION ACROSS THE WARM
SECTOR. HOWEVER...AT LEAST ISOLATED TSTM DEVELOPMENT SEEMS PROBABLE
BY MID/LATE AFTERNOON ALONG THE EASTERN NEB/WESTERN IA WSW-ENE
ORIENTED FRONTAL ZONE...WITH ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT POSSIBLE AMIDST
A STRONGLY HEATED/MIXED BOUNDARY LAYER IN VICINITY OF SURFACE
LOW/DRYLINE ACROSS WEST CENTRAL KS/SOUTHERN NEB. AMPLE WARM SECTOR
HEATING AND AROUND 60F SURFACE DEWPOINTS WILL LIKELY SUPPORT MLCAPE
TO AROUND 2000-2500 J/KG. VERTICAL SHEAR /45-55 KT/ WILL BE MORE
THAN ADEQUATE FOR SUPERCELLS/WELL-ORGANIZED MULTICELLS CAPABLE OF
LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. A FEW TORNADOES WILL BE POSSIBLE AS
WELL...BUT MODEST LOW LEVEL SHEAR AND/OR DEEPER MIXING ACROSS KS MAY
TEND TO LIMIT THE OVERALL TORNADO POTENTIAL. AIDED BY A NOCTURNALLY
INTENSIFYING LOW LEVEL JET ACROSS KS INTO THE MIDDLE MO RIVER
VALLEY...AT LEAST AN ISOLATED HAIL/PERHAPS STRONG WIND GUST THREAT
MAY CONTINUE WELL THROUGH THE NIGHT ACROSS THE CORN BELT.

...WESTERN OK AND WEST/SOUTHWEST TX...
A MORE ISOLATED/CONDITIONAL SEVERE POTENTIAL WILL EXTEND SOUTHWARD
ALONG THE DRYLINE FROM WESTERN OK TO SOUTHWEST TX...WITH STRONG
HEATING AND DEEP MIXING LIKELY TO LOCALLY ERODE THE CAP AND RESULT
IN ISOLATED TSTM DEVELOPMENT BY LATE AFTERNOON. IN ADDITION TO THE
12Z WRF-NMM...THIS IDEA IS SUPPORTED BY 00Z ECMWF GUIDANCE AND
ASSORTMENT OF NAM/ETA-BMJ AND NAMKF MEMBERS FROM THE 09Z SREF.
MODERATE POTENTIAL INSTABILITY AND ADEQUATE WIND PROFILES WOULD
CONDITIONALLY SUPPORT A FEW HIGH-BASED SUPERCELLS/ORGANIZED
MULTICELLS WITH LARGE HAIL/DAMAGING WINDS AS THE PRIMARY RISK.

...MAINE...
SCATTERED TSTMS ARE LIKELY TO DEVELOP MAINLY ACROSS NORTHERN MAINE
ON SATURDAY AHEAD OF WESTERN QUEBEC UPPER TROUGH AND
APPROACHING/PRONOUNCED MID LEVEL JET STREAK AND ASSOCIATED SURFACE
COLD FRONT. WHILE THE BOUNDARY LAYER WILL NOT BE PARTICULARLY MOIST
OR UNSTABLE...PLUME OF STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES/MODEST BUOYANCY
AND STRENGTHENING/BUT LARGELY UNIDIRECTIONAL LOW TO MID TROPOSPHERIC
WIND FIELDS WOULD SUPPORT FAST MOVING/LOW-TOPPED CLUSTERS OF TSTMS
WITH A DAMAGING WIND AND HAIL RISK...MAINLY ACROSS NORTHERN MAINE
SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

...NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN WEST...
LARGE SCALE HEIGHT FALLS AND A SOUTHWARD SAGGING COLD FRONT ARE
EXPECTED ACROSS THE REGION AHEAD/SOUTH OF SHORTWAVE TROUGH ADVANCING
FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA/ALBERTA INTO MT/NORTHERN ID. RESIDUALLY
MOIST/WEAKLY UNSTABLE AIRMASS WITH PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES IN
EXCESS OF 0.75 INCHES WILL SUPPORT SOME STRONGER TSTMS CAPABLE OF
HAIL/PERHAPS SOME STRONG WIND GUSTS.

AREAS AFFECTED...NW NV...W CNTRL AND NW UT...INTO PARTS OF SRN ID

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 051730Z - 051930Z

A SEVERE THREAT MAY INCREASE DURING THE 18-21Z TIME FRAME...MAINLY
SOUTH/WEST OF THE SALT LAKE CITY AREA...ACROSS WEST CENTRAL/
NORTHWEST UTAH. THIS MAY BE FAIRLY LOCALIZED...AND A WATCH IS NOT
CURRENTLY ANTICIPATED...BUT TRENDS WILL BE MONITORED.

SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT IS NOW WELL UNDERWAY... SUPPORTED
BY FORCING FOR UPWARD VERTICAL MOTION IN THE EXIT REGION OF A
MID/UPPER JET STREAK NOSING NORTHEASTWARD TO THE EAST OF THE CLOSED
LOW CENTER NEAR THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA COAST. MID-LEVEL COOLING
COUPLED WITH BOUNDARY LAYER HEATING IS CONTRIBUTING TO STEEPENING
LAPSE RATES...WITH STRONGEST DESTABILIZATION LIKELY TO BECOME
FOCUSED...BETWEEN NOW AND 21Z...NEAR A NARROW AXIS OF HIGHER
MOISTURE CONTENT AIR PRESENT ACROSS THE GREAT SALT LAKE
DESERT...PERHAPS INTO PARTS OF THE UPPER SNAKE VALLEY. MIXED LAYER
CAPE COULD EXCEED 1000 J/KG...AS 50-60 KT 500 MB FLOW OVERSPREADS
WEST CENTRAL/NORTHWEST UTAH. THIS WILL PROVIDE A FAVORABLE
ENVIRONMENT FOR SUPERCELLS...CAPABLE OF PRODUCING AT LEAST LARGE
HAIL. DOWNWARD TRANSPORT OF MOMENTUM IN DOWNDRAFTS MAY SUPPORT
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS...PARTICULARLY IN AREAS NOT SIGNIFICANTLY
IMPACTED BY ONGOING CONVECTION.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT FOR
PARTS OF THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS...

...CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT...
ON THE LARGER SCALE...SHORTWAVE RIDGING WILL PERSIST OVER THE
CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS INTO THIS AFTERNOON...PRIOR TO THE ARRIVAL OF A
NEWD EJECTING SPEED MAX EMANATING FROM THE SRN GREAT BASIN. IN THE
LOW LEVELS...A WEAK LEE CYCLONE WILL REMAIN ACROSS ERN CO...WHILE
ANOTHER COLD FRONT PROGRESSES SWD INTO NRN NEB AND ERN WY. S OF THE
COLD FRONT AND N OF THE LEE CYCLONE...UPSLOPE FLOW OF LOW-MID 50S
BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS WILL BE MAINTAINED INVOF ANOTHER/WEAKER
BAROCLINIC ZONE FROM NW KS/SW NEB NWWD INTO SE WY. SURFACE HEATING
W OF AN INITIAL CIRRUS BAND AND UPSLOPE FLOW WILL SUPPORT
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT THIS AFTERNOON ONCE SURFACE TEMPERATURES
APPROACH 70-72 F IN SE WY AND 78-80 F IN NE CO...WITH INITIAL
DEVELOPMENT POSSIBLE FROM AREAS N OF THE PALMER DIVIDE TO THE
CHEYENNE RIDGE AND LARAMIE MOUNTAINS. CONVECTION WILL THEN SPREAD
EWD THIS EVENING INTO AN ENVIRONMENT WITH MODERATE INSTABILITY
/MLCAPE VALUES AROUND 1500 J/KG/.

50-60 KT WLY FLOW ALOFT ABOVE THE LOW-LEVEL ELY/ESELY FLOW WILL
RESULT IN FAVORABLE VERTICAL SHEAR FOR SUPERCELLS /EFFECTIVE BULK
SHEAR OF 45-55 KT/. RELATIVELY STRAIGHT HODOGRAPHS COULD SUPPORT
STORM SPLITS INITIALLY...WHILE A TENDENCY FOR INCREASED CLOCKWISE
CURVATURE AND HODOGRAPH LENGTH WITH EWD EXTENT AND LATER THIS
EVENING SHOULD BE MORE FAVORABLE FOR TORNADIC SUPERCELLS. ISOLATED
VERY LARGE HAIL COULD ALSO OCCUR WITH THE MORE INTENSE SUPERCELLS
THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING. BY EARLY TONIGHT...CONVECTION WILL BEGIN TO
TRANSITION INTO MORE ELEVATED THUNDERSTORM CLUSTERS IN ASSOCIATION
WITH INCREASING WAA... WITH A LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WIND THREAT
CONTINUING OVERNIGHT INTO NEB.

...SRN HIGH PLAINS THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING...
REGIONAL 12Z SOUNDINGS INDICATE THAT AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES IN THE
UPPER 80S TO LOWER 90S WILL REDUCE CONVECTIVE INHIBITION AND SUPPORT
WIDELY SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE LEE
TROUGH/DRYLINE FROM SW KS INTO TX PANHANDLE/W CENTRAL TX. MODERATE
INSTABILITY AND VERTICAL SHEAR COULD BE MARGINALLY FAVORABLE FOR
HIGH-BASED SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING ISOLATED LARGE HAIL AND
STRONG OUTFLOW WINDS.

...NE NC/SE VA THIS AFTERNOON...
A REMNANT MCV IS MOVING NEWD ACROSS CENTRAL NC TOWARD SE VA...ALONG
A STALLED NE-SW ORIENTED FRONT. A BAND OF 25-30 KT LOW-MID LEVEL
FLOW E/SE OF THE MCV AND SOMEWHAT STRONGER LOW-LEVEL SHEAR ALONG THE
FRONT MAY BE SUFFICIENT FOR ISOLATED ROTATING STORMS. AN
ISOLATED/BRIEF TORNADO COULD OCCUR ALONG THE FRONT AND IMMEDIATELY
IN ADVANCE OF THE MCV FROM N CENTRAL/NE NC INTO SE VA THIS
AFTERNOON.

...NRN GREAT BASIN THIS AFTERNOON...
SURFACE HEATING AND A BROAD REGION OF ASCENT IN THE EXIT REGION OF A
SPEED MAX ROTATING AROUND THE CA/NV CLOSED LOW WILL PROMOTE
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE AFTERNOON FROM NRN
NV/UT NWD INTO SRN ID. THE STRONGER VERTICAL SHEAR WILL BE LOCATED
FARTHER E TOWARD NW UT AND SE ID WHERE CLOUDS WILL MORE LIKELY
INTERFERE WITH SURFACE HEATING...AND THE STRONGER SURFACE HEATING
WILL OCCUR FARTHER W/NW TOWARD S/SW ID WHERE VERTICAL SHEAR WILL BE
WEAKER. A FEW STORMS MAY PRODUCE MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL AND STRONG
OUTFLOW WINDS...BUT THE SEVERE THREAT SHOULD REMAIN RELATIVELY
MARGINAL AND/OR ISOLATED.
