CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 042026Z - 042130Z

A VERY ISOLD SEVERE THREAT MAY ENSUE ACROSS PARTS OF SERN NM INTO
SWRN TX THIS AFTERNOON INTO THE EARLY EVENING HOURS.

LATEST RADAR MOSAIC SHOWS DEVELOPING STORMS MOVING SEWD OFF THE
SACRAMENTO MOUNTAINS WITH ANOTHER STORM LOCATED OVER THE DAVIS
MOUNTAINS IN SWRN TX. DESPITE THE REGION BEING LOCATED APPRECIABLY
UNDERNEATH THE UPPER RIDGE...25 KT H5 FLOW OVERTOP UPSLOPE SELY FLOW
AT THE SURFACE WILL ADEQUATELY AID IN STORM ORGANIZATION WITH 35 KTS
0-6 KM SHEAR. 12Z MAF RAOB DISPLAYED HIGHER QUALITY MOIST LAYER
THROUGH 850 MB WITH PRECIPITABLE WATER ABOVE 1 INCH. MOST RECENT
GPS PRECIPITABLE WATER OBSERVATION IN SERN NM DEPICTED A SIMILAR
QUALITY AIRMASS IN PLACE FURTHER W...IN AGREEMENT WITH LATEST GOES
SOUNDER PRECIPITABLE WATER DATA. MODIFYING THE 12Z MAB RAOB FOR
UPPER 80S TEMP OVER LOW TO MID 50S DEWPOINT--YIELDS MODERATE
CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY /1500-2000 J/KG MLCAPE/. AS SUCH...EXPECTING
STORMS TO EVENTUALLY ORGANIZE AS THEY MOVE SEWD...POSING AN ISOLD
LARGE HAIL/DMGG WIND THREAT WITH TIME. DUE TO MODEL GUIDANCE AND
EXPECTED SPARSE STORM COVERAGE WITH VERY LIMITED SUPPORT ALOFT...THE
CORRESPONDING SEVERE THREAT WILL LIKELY REMAIN VERY ISOLD WITH A WW

HAVE INTRODUCED CATEGORICAL SLIGHT RISK FOR PORTIONS OF SOUTHERN VA
INTO NC. STRONG/SEVERE TSTM POTENTIAL SHOULD REMAIN SOMEWHAT FOCUSED
IN VICINITY OF WEST-EAST FRONTAL ZONE ACROSS SOUTHERN VA/NORTHERN
NC. WITHIN THIS CORRIDOR...MODEST MID TROPOSPHERIC FLOW PER REGIONAL
WSR-88D VWP DATA...ENHANCED VORTICITY ALONG LOW LEVEL FRONTAL
BOUNDARY...AND A MOIST AIRMASS/STRONG LOW LEVEL CAPE SHOULD SUPPORT
SOME TRANSIENT SUPERCELLS/FAIRLY ORGANIZED MULTICELLS WITH POTENTIAL
FOR A FEW BRIEF TORNADOES ALONG WITH DAMAGING WINDS/SOME HAIL. SEE

..GUYER.. 06/04/2009

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1127 AM CDT THU JUN 04 2009/

..SYNOPSIS...
BROAD CYCLONIC FLOW WILL REMAIN EAST OF THE ROCKIES THROUGH THE
PERIOD. WEAK DISTURBANCES ROTATING WITHIN THIS FLOW WERE INDICATED
BY SATELLITE/RADAR OVER NEB...WRN MS AND SERN AL. AN UPPER LOW OFF
THE CA COAST IS FORECAST TO MOVE INLAND FRI MORNING. STRONG
SHORTWAVE IMPULSE OVER SASKATCHEWAN IS EXPECTED TO MOVE SEWD INTO
NRN MN BY 12Z FRI. AT THE SURFACE...A COLD FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH THE
CANADIAN IMPULSE WILL DROP SEWD INTO THE NRN PLAINS/UPPER MS
VALLEY...WHILE WEAK COLD FRONT FROM VA SEWD INTO THE LOWER MS VALLEY
EDGES SLOWLY SEWD.

...CENTRAL/SRN HIGH PLAINS...
AS SURFACE RIDGE OVER THE CENTRAL PLAINS SHIFTS EWD INTO THE MS
VALLEY...WINDS WILL BECOME SELY AND INCREASE THE UPSLOPE FLOW ACROSS
THE REGION. ALTHOUGH DEWPOINTS ARE EXPECTED TO ONLY BE IN THE 40S TO
LOWER 50S F...STEEP LAPSE RATES ABOVE BOUNDARY LAYER WILL SUPPORT
SBCAPES TO NEAR 1000 J/KG THIS AFTERNOON. ALTHOUGH REGION WILL BE
LOCATED ON THE ERN SIDE OF UPPER RIDGE...STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO BE
PRIMARILY DRIVEN BY STRONG DIFFERENTIAL HEATING NEAR THE EASTERN
FOOTHILLS. BEST POTENTIAL FOR A GREATER STORM COVERAGE SHOULD BE
ACROSS SERN CO/NERN NM AND SERN WY WHERE SUNSHINE/HEATING HAS BEEN
STRONGER THIS MORNING.

ALTHOUGH VERTICAL WIND PROFILES ARE NOT PARTICULARLY STRONG IN THE
LOWER 2-3 KM...STRONGLY VEERING WINDS WITHIN THIS LAYER AND 30-50 KT
WNWLY WINDS BETWEEN 600-200 MB SHOULD PROVIDE SUFFICIENT SHEAR FOR
SOME MID LEVEL ROTATION IN STORMS. THE LACK OF RICHER BOUNDARY LAYER
MOISTURE INDICATES THAT HAIL SHOULD BE THE PRIMARY THREAT.

...PACIFIC NW AND NRN ROCKIES...
STRONGLY DIFFLUENT FLOW ALOFT AND APPROACHING MID LEVEL JET MAX
SHOULD PROVIDE SUFFICIENT LIFT FOR SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS
THUNDERSTORMS...ESPECIALLY THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. RELATIVELY
MOIST SOUNDINGS...PW VALUES AROUND 1 INCH...AND SBCAPES NEAR 1000
J/KG...COMBINED WITH MOSTLY SLY FLOW ALOFT WILL BE FAVORABLE FOR
LINE SEGMENTS AND LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS/HAIL. A FEW SUPERCELLS ALSO
APPEAR POSSIBLE...ESPECIALLY ACROSS ERN ORE/NRN NV/SRN ID...WHERE
DEEP LAYER SHEAR WILL BE THE GREATEST AT 40-45 KT.

...SERN U.S...
VERY MOIST AND UNSTABLE AIR MASS...COMBINED WITH BROAD LIFT
ASSOCIATED WITH UPPER TROUGH...SHOULD RESULT IN NUMEROUS
STORMS.PRESENCE OF STRONGER WINDS NEAR SERN AL UPPER TROUGH AND
MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER COULD YIELD A BRIEF TORNADO OR TWO FROM NRN
FL/ERN GA NEWD INTO THE CAROLINAS. HOWEVER...CONSIDERABLE
CLOUDS/PCPN AND POOR LAPSE RATES ARE EXPECTED TO LIMIT THE SEVERE
POTENTIAL.

...NERN ND/NWRN MN...
ALTHOUGH DEWPOINTS WILL ONLY BE IN THE 40S...STEEPER MID LEVEL LAPSE
RATES MAY SUPPORT ENOUGH INSTABILITY FOR STORMS TO DEVELOP ALONG
COLD FRONT BY LATE AFTERNOON. IF STORMS DEVELOP...DEEP LAYER SHEAR
AT 40 KT WOULD SUPPORT SUSTAINED STORMS WITH ISOLATED WIND GUSTS
POSSIBLE.

TSTMS WILL LIKELY DEVELOP IN THE NEXT 1-2 HOURS OVER THE COLORADO
FOOTHILLS/PALMER DIVIDE/RATON MESA. AS TSTMS MOVE ESEWD OVER THE
HIGH PLAINS...THE STRONGER/MORE ORGANIZED STORMS WILL BECOME CAPABLE

STORMS OVER CNTRL CO ROCKIES WITH CU SWD TOWARDS RTN. AREA OF LOW
CLOUDS PERSISTED OVER NERN CO UNTIL AROUND 17Z GENERALLY ALONG/N OF
THE PALMER DIVIDE...RETARDING SURFACE HEATING IN THIS AREA. A
DIFFERENTIAL HEATING BOUNDARY DEVELOPED AS A RESULT...AND IS

TRENDS ARE BEING MONITORED FOR AN INCREASING SEVERE THREAT AND THE
POSSIBILITY OF A WW.

A SIGNIFICANT IMPULSE CONTINUES TO GRADUALLY PIVOT THROUGH THE
NORTHEASTERN PERIPHERY OF THE CLOSED LOW....NOW CENTERED JUST WEST
OF THE CALIFORNIA COAST...ACROSS PARTS OF THE GREAT BASIN INTO THE
SOUTHERN CASCADES. AS THIS OCCURS...MID-LEVEL COOLING IS
CONTRIBUTING TO STEEPENING LAPSE RATES AS SURFACE HEATING PROGRESSES
ACROSS AREAS WEST OF THE SOUTHERN CASCADES AND SOUTH OF THE
MOUNTAINS OF NORTHEAST OREGON. LATEST OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS SUGGESTS
THAT THE DEEPENING MIXED BOUNDARY LAYER IS SUFFICIENTLY MOIST TO
SUPPORT WEAK TO MODERATE POTENTIAL INSTABILITY...AS 500 MB FLOW
STRENGTHENS IN EXCESS OF 50 KT...FROM SOUTHEAST TO NORTHWEST ACROSS
THE REGION. INHIBITION MAY BECOME SUFFICIENTLY WEAK FOR
INTENSIFYING CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT AS EARLY AS MIDDAY...BEFORE
PROBABILITY/COVERAGE OF STORMS INCREASES DURING AND SHORTLY AFTER
THE PEAK HEATING HOURS. DEEP LAYER SHEAR APPEARS LIKELY TO BECOME
FAVORABLE...WHERE TERRAIN ALLOWS IN AT LEAST LOCALIZED AREAS...FOR
ISOLATED SUPERCELLS...ENHANCING THE RISK FOR LARGE HAIL AND LOCALLY
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF EASTERN
ORE/WESTERN ID/SOUTHEAST WA...

...SYNOPSIS...
CLOSED UPPER LOW CURRENTLY OFF THE NORTHERN CA COAST IS EXPECTED TO
MOVE ONSHORE EARLY FRIDAY...AND GRADUALLY OPEN AS IT CROSSES THE
GREAT BASIN FRIDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SATURDAY. FARTHER EAST...BRUNT
OF CANADIAN UPPER TROUGH SHOULD GRADUALLY TAKE ON A NEGATIVE TILT
OVER ONTARIO...WHILE THE RESIDUAL UPPER TROUGH OVER THE SOUTHEAST
STATES SLOWLY MIGRATES EASTWARD. WITHIN THIS LARGE SCALE
REGIME...PRIMARY SURFACE COLD FRONT WILL PROGRESS EASTWARD ACROSS
THE GREAT LAKES REGION...WHILE THE WESTERN PORTION OF THE FRONT
DEVELOPS SOUTHWARD ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS AND NORTHERN HIGH
PLAINS/NORTHERN GREAT DIVIDE VICINITY.

...CENTRAL PLAINS...
AFOREMENTIONED COLD FRONT SHOULD MOVE SOUTHWARD ACROSS THE CENTRAL
PLAINS EARLY FRIDAY...AND BEGIN TO STALL IN A WEST-EAST FASHION
ACROSS NEB BY AFTERNOON. POTENTIAL FOR EARLY DAY CLOUD
COVER/PRECIPITATION ACROSS NEB SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO A RELATIVELY
STABLE NORTH-SIDE OF THE SURFACE BOUNDARY AWAY FROM THE HIGHER
TERRAIN. AS LARGE SCALE HEIGHT FALLS BEGIN TO OCCUR ACROSS THE
CENTRAL ROCKIES AHEAD OF CA/GREAT BASIN UPPER TROUGH...LEE
CYCLOGENESIS ALONG THE CO/KS BORDER DURING THE DAY WILL ENHANCE
UPSLOPE POST-FRONTAL TRAJECTORIES INTO THE HIGHER TERRAIN/FRONT
RANGE OF EASTERN WY/NORTHEAST CO AND THE IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT
CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS. IT SEEMS PROBABLE THAT DIFFERENTIAL
HEATING/UPSLOPE TRAJECTORIES SHOULD RESULT IN INCIPIENT TSTM
DEVELOPMENT BY EARLY/MID AFTERNOON ACROSS SOUTHEAST WY/NORTHEAST
CO...INCLUDING THE CHEYENNE RIDGE AND ALONG/NORTH OF THE PALMER
DIVIDE. OTHER INITIAL TSTM DEVELOPMENT WILL BE POSSIBLE A BIT
FARTHER EAST NEAR THE CO/NEB/KS BORDER AREA AMIDST A DEEP MIXED
BOUNDARY LAYER IN VICINITY OF THE DEEPENING SURFACE LOW AND PERHAPS
RESIDUAL OUTFLOW PENDING LINGERING OVERNIGHT/EARLY MORNING
DEVELOPMENT ACROSS NEB.

THE BOUNDARY LAYER IN VICINITY OF THE WEST-EAST FRONTAL ZONE WILL
NOT BE PARTICULARLY MOIST /SURFACE DEWPOINTS MAINLY UPPER 40S TO
MIDDLE 50S F/...BUT SUFFICIENT MOISTURE/HEATING BENEATH A STRONG
ELEVATED MIXED LAYER/VERY STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL
CONTRIBUTE TO A MODERATELY UNSTABLE BOUNDARY LAYER ACROSS SOUTHEAST
WY/NORTHEAST CO TO SOUTHWEST NEB/WESTERN KS. WITH MID LEVEL WINDS
EXPECTED TO STEADILY INCREASE THROUGH THE AFTERNOON ATOP EASTERLY
FLOW IN THE BOUNDARY LAYER...EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR OF 40-50 KT WILL
BE MORE THAN ADEQUATE FOR SUPERCELLULAR DEVELOPMENT. SEVERE HAIL
WILL LIKELY BE PRIMARY HAZARD...BUT ISOLATED TORNADOES AND DAMAGING
WINDS WILL BE POSSIBLE AS WELL.

...SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS...
BENEATH RESIDUAL INFLUENCE OF AN UPPER RIDGE...THE SEVERE THREAT
WILL BE MUCH MORE CONDITIONAL/ISOLATED IN NATURE WITH SOUTHWARD
EXTENT ACROSS THE SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS. NONETHELESS...A FEW TSTMS
WILL BE CAPABLE OF SEVERE HAIL/STRONG WINDS...MAINLY IN VICINITY OF
DRYLINE FROM FAR SOUTHWEST KS INTO THE TX/OK PANHANDLES AND
WEST/SOUTHWEST TX FRIDAY LATE AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING. MAINLY
PORTIONS OF THE OK/TX PANHANDLES MAY ULTIMATELY WARRANT A
CATEGORICAL SLIGHT RISK SHOULD CONFIDENCE IN TSTM
DEVELOPMENT/COVERAGE INCREASE.

...NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN WEST...
IN VICINITY OF A SURFACE LOW...THE PRESENCE OF STEEP LAPSE RATES AND
PW VALUES OF 0.75-1.0 INCH WILL CONTRIBUTE TO A MODERATELY UNSTABLE
AIRMASS FRIDAY WITH MLCAPE LOCALLY APPROACHING 1000 J/KG ACROSS
PORTIONS OF THE NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION...WITH AN UPSWING IN
SCATTERED TSTM DEVELOPMENT EXPECTED DURING THE AFTERNOON. VERTICAL
SHEAR WILL BE WEAK...BUT THE PRESENCE OF A RESIDUALLY MOIST
AIRMASS/STEEP LAPSE RATES WILL SUPPORT HAIL/STRONG WIND GUSTS WITH
THE STRONGEST TSTMS.

...SOUTHEAST STATES/CAROLINAS...
SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS TSTMS ARE EXPECTED TO DIURNALLY INCREASE ALONG
A SURFACE FRONT AND SEA BREEZE BOUNDARIES ON FRIDAY...AS DEEP ASCENT
ASSOCIATED WITH THE SOUTHEAST STATES SLOW MOVING UPPER TROUGH
INTERACTS WITH A RESIDUALLY MOIST/POTENTIALLY UNSTABLE AIRMASS. A
FEW OF THE STRONGER STORMS WILL BE CAPABLE OF LOCALLY STRONG WIND
GUSTS/PERHAPS SMALL HAIL THROUGH THE AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING HOURS.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS IN PORTIONS OF THE
PACIFIC NORTHWEST AND NORTHERN ROCKIES...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE SRN/CENTRAL HIGH
PLAINS...

..SYNOPSIS...

POSSIBLE.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0944
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1051 AM CDT THU JUN 04 2009

AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS OF NRN FL/THE FL PANHANDLE INTO S CNTRL GA

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 041551Z - 041715Z

THE NEED FOR A WW IS NOT CURRENTLY ANTICIPATED...BUT THE SEVERE
THREAT MAY NOT BE COMPLETELY NEGLIGIBLE THROUGH THE MID/LATE
AFTERNOON HOURS.

A LOWER/MID TROPOSPHERIC CYCLONIC VORTICITY CENTER OVER SOUTHEASTERN
ALABAMA...WITHIN A BROADER SCALE WEAK UPPER TROUGH ...IS PROGGED TO
CONTINUE SLOWLY LIFTING NORTHEASTWARD TOWARD THE COLUMBUS GA AREA
BETWEEN NOW AND 18-21Z. FORCING WITH THIS FEATURE PROBABLY IS
ALREADY PROVIDING SUPPORT FOR ONGOING STORMS AROUND THE TALLAHASSEE
AREA OF NORTHERN FLORIDA...WITH ADDITIONAL SCATTERED STORM
DEVELOPMENT LIKELY ACROSS NORTHERN FLORIDA THROUGH MUCH OF SOUTHERN
GEORGIA...AS SURFACE HEATING CONTRIBUTES TO BOUNDARY LAYER
DESTABILIZATION. BOTH MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND DEEP LAYER SHEAR
ARE QUITE WEAK ACROSS THIS REGION...AND THESE ARE DEFINITE LIMITING
FACTORS TO SEVERE POTENTIAL TODAY. HOWEVER... OBSERVATIONAL AND
FORECAST DATA INDICATE A 20-30 KT SOUTHERLY 850 MB JET ACCOMPANYING
THE UPPER IMPULSE...WHICH...IN THE PRESENCE OF A HIGH MOISTURE
CONTENT BOUNDARY LAYER WITH CAPE OF 1000-2000 J/KG ...MAY CONTRIBUTE
TO LARGE ENOUGH LOW-LEVEL HODOGRAPHS FOR VIGOROUS UPDRAFTS WITH
SUSTAINED ROTATION. AN ISOLATED... GENERALLY BRIEF...TORNADO IS NOT
OUT OF THE QUESTION...WITH LOCALIZED DOWNBURSTS ALSO POSSIBLE.
