CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 533...

VALID 302025Z - 302130Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 533
CONTINUES.

NUMEROUS STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WERE LOCATED ACROSS FAR NRN
NJ AND ERN NY. THESE STORMS WILL SHIFT EWD THROUGH THE ERN THIRD OF
THE WATCH FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. HOWEVER...THESE STORMS
SHOULD BEGIN TO WEAKEN AS THEY MOVE EAST OF THE CURRENT WATCH AND
ENCOUNTER WEAKER INSTABILITY. THE MAIN THREAT SHOULD BE HAIL RANGING
IN SIZE FROM 3/4 TO 1 1/4 INCHES AND BRIEF GUSTY WINDS TO 60 MPH.
ALTHOUGH OTHER CONVECTION IN WRN NY/PA MAY SHIFT INTO THE WRN
PORTIONS OF THE WW LATER THIS AFTERNOON...THE DOWNDRAFTS BEHIND THE
INITIAL BAND OF STORMS HAS STABILIZED THE BOUNDARY LAYER...SO
RENEWED SEVERE STORM DEVELOPMENT IS NOT ANTICIPATED.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 301947
SWODY1
SPC AC 301944

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0244 PM CDT TUE JUN 30 2009

VALID 302000Z - 011200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER THE NORTHEAST...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF AR AND OK...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM SRN MT/NRN WY INTO THE NRN
HIGH PLAINS...

...NORTHEAST...
SEVERAL BANDS OF STRONG/SEVERE STORMS CONTINUE TO MOVE NNEWD OVER
ERN NY...EXTREME ERN PA...AND NWRN NJ. THESE ARE OCCURRING IN
ASSOCIATION WITH A SHORT WAVE TROUGH ROTATING ACROSS THE LOWER GREAT
LAKES AROUND THE SRN PERIPHERY OF THE QUASI-STATIONARY UPPER LOW.
THE THREAT FOR DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND LARGE HAIL WILL CONTINUE
DURING THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS BEFORE GRADUALLY DIMINISHING BY EARLY
EVENING.

...OK/AR...
WIDELY SCATTERED STRONG/SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS HAVE DEVELOPED ALONG
WEAK FRONT/CONVERGENCE ZONE OVER EXTREME SRN MO/NRN AR...ALONG THE
SRN EDGE OF STRONGER NWLY FLOW ALOFT WITHIN A MODERATELY UNSTABLE
ENVIRONMENT WITH MLCAPE OF 1500-2000 J/KG. VISIBLE IMAGERY SHOWS
CU/TCU HAVE DEVELOPED WWD ALONG THE BNDRY INTO WRN OK AND ADDITIONAL
THUNDERSTORMS MAY INITIATE ALONG THE BNDRY. LARGE SURFACE
TEMPERATURE/DEW POINT SPREADS ON THE ORDER OF 25-30F AND ASSOCIATED
INVERTED-V PBL PROFILES INDICATE POTENTIAL FOR STRONG
DOWNBURSTS...AND LARGE HAIL...TO ACCOMPANY ANY STORMS THAT MAY
DEVELOP.

...SRN MT/NRN WY INTO THE NRN HIGH PLAINS...
SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS HIGH-BASED CONVECTION MOVING NEWD ACROSS
SERN ID TOWARD SWRN MT...AND OVER PARTS OF NRN WY. CONVECTIVE
ACTIVITY APPEARS TO BE OCCURRING IN ASSOCIATION WITH SEVERAL WEAK
SHORT WAVE TROUGHS MOVING NEWD/EWD ALONG THE NRN PERIPHERY OF THE
SRN PLATEAU UPPER RIDGE. THE ID STORMS MAY INTENSIFY AS THEY MOVE
EWD ACROSS SRN MT WITHIN BAND OF 40 KT WESTERLY MID LEVEL WINDS.
SIMILARLY...CONVECTION OVER NERN WY/SERN MT AREA WILL HAVE POTENTIAL
TO INTENSIFY AS IT MOVES EWD INTO INCREASING LOW LEVEL MOISTURE AND
INSTABILITY OVER THE NRN HIGH PLAINS. STRONGER STORMS WILL BE
CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WINDS AND HAIL.

..WEISS.. 06/30/2009

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1048 AM CDT TUE JUN 30 2009/

...NORTHEAST...
A SHORTWAVE TROUGH CURRENTLY ROTATING INTO WESTERN NY WILL HELP TO
INTENSIFY SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS BY EARLY AFTERNOON OVER PARTS OF
NY/PA...SPREADING INTO WESTERN NEW ENGLAND. COLD TEMPERATURES ALOFT
AND SUFFICIENT VERTICAL SHEAR WILL PROMOTE A RISK OF WIDELY
SCATTERED SEVERE STORMS CAPABLE OF HAIL AND LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS.
PLEASE REFER TO SWOMCD NUMBER 1378 AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
NUMBER 533 FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

...NORTHERN PLAINS...
WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS A BROAD UPPER TROUGH OVER THE NORTHWEST
STATES...WITH A SMALL SHORTWAVE TROUGH MOVING ACROSS MT/WY. THIS
FEATURE WILL SLOWLY MOVE EASTWARD INTO THE NORTHERN HIGH PLAINS THIS
AFTERNOON PROVIDING A FOCUS FOR SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT.
MORNING RAOBS OVER THIS REGION SHOWED A WARM EML/CAPPING LAYER WHICH
WILL ERODE FROM THE WEST THIS AFTERNOON WITH DAYTIME HEATING. THIS
SHOULD RESULT IN A RATHER NARROW AXIS OF WEAK CAP ACROSS EASTERN
MT/WY AND WESTERN ND/SD/NEB. ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO
DEVELOP BY LATE AFTERNOON AND TRACK SOUTHEASTWARD INTO STRENGTHENING
SOUTHERLY LOW LEVEL FLOW. A FEW SUPERCELLS ARE POSSIBLE CAPABLE OF
DAMAGING WINDS AND HAIL.

...SOUTHERN MT...
RATHER STRONG DEEP LAYER VERTICAL SHEAR WILL BE PRESENT THIS
AFTERNOON OVER THE MOUNTAINS OF SOUTHERN MT...WHERE DEWPOINTS IN THE
50S AND STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL COEXIST. MODELS ARE
CONSISTENT IN SHOWING SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING THIS
EVENING WEST OF BIL...SPREADING EASTWARD AFTER DARK. ISOLATED
SUPERCELLS WILL BE POSSIBLE IN THIS AREA WITH RISK HAIL AND DAMAGING
WINDS IN STRONGEST CELLS.

...AR/OK...
SMALL CLUSTER OF THUNDERSTORMS THAT AFFECTED SOUTHERN MO EARLIER
THIS MORNING IS MOVING SOUTHWARD AND SLOWLY WEAKENING OVER AR. THIS
ACTIVITY HAS LEFT AN OUTFLOW BOUNDARY OVER WESTERN AR/EASTERN OK
WHICH MAY BE THE FOCUS FOR A FEW AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS.
TEMPERATURES WELL INTO THE 90S AND MLCAPE VALUES OF AROUND 2500 J/KG
WILL PROMOTE STRONG UPDRAFTS/DOWNDRAFTS CAPABLE OF LOCALLY DAMAGING
WINDS. WESTWARD EXTENT OF SEVERE THREAT IS UNCERTAIN...BUT HAVE
INCLUDED MORE OF OK AS NEW MODEL GUIDANCE INDICATES THUNDERSTORMS
MAY BE MORE NUMEROUS IN THIS AREA. ISOLATED STRONG CELLS CAPABLE OF
DAMAGING WINDS MAY EXTEND AS FAR WEST AS THE TX PANHANDLE THIS
EVENING.

...FL...
A VERY MOIST AND UNSTABLE AIRMASS IS IN PLACE ONCE AGAIN THIS
MORNING OVER THE FL PENINSULA WITH PWAT VALUES OVER 2 INCHES.
NUMEROUS THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED WITH ISOLATED/BRIEF WET
MICROBURSTS POSSIBLE WITH STRONGEST CORES.

AREAS AFFECTED...NERN NM...OK AND TX PANHANDLES AND WRN OK

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 301938Z - 302115Z

A FEW STRONG STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ALONG A WEAK COLD FRONT
FROM WESTERN OK INTO THE TX PANHANDLE THIS AFTERNOON AS WELL AS NEAR
THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF NERN NM. THOUGH GUSTY WINDS ARE CERTAINLY
POSSIBLE...SEVERE THREAT SHOULD BE RELATIVELY BRIEF WITH SPARSE
STORM COVERAGE...SO A WW IS NOT EXPECTED.

AT 19Z...A WEAK COLD FRONT STRETCHED NEAR 35 N OKC-AMA-LVS LINE.
TEMPERATURES NEAR THE FRONT HAD WARMED INTO THE MID 90S...WITH
DEWPOINTS LOWERING INTO UPPER 50S/LOWER 60S. EVEN THOUGH THE
BOUNDARY LAYER HAD MIXED AND DRIED...FRONTAL CONVERGENCE...PW/S
BETWEEN 1.25-1.5 INCHES AND WEAK INSTABILITY SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT
FOR A FEW HIGH BASED THUNDERSTORMS TO DEVELOP INTO THE EVENING
HOURS. FOR ANY STORMS THAT DEVELOP HEAVY RAIN CORES...THE STRONGER
DOWNDRAFT INTO THE WELL MIXED AND DEEP BOUNDARY LAYER WOULD BE
FAVORABLE FOR STRONG AND POSSIBLY EVEN BRIEFLY SEVERE WIND GUSTS.
HOWEVER...RELATIVELY WEAK SHEAR AND THE LACK OF RICHER BOUNDARY
LAYER MOISTURE SUGGESTS STORM COVERAGE SHOULD BE VERY WIDELY
SCATTERED...WITH THE SEVERE THREAT WITH ANY STORM BRIEF. ALSO...THE
DRY BOUNDARY LAYER WILL PROVIDE A THREAT FOR GUSTY WINDS WITH STORMS
MOVING SSEWD OFF THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF NERN NM.

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 533

AT 18Z...A BAND OF STRONG/SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WAS SHIFTING EWD AT
20-25 KT ACROSS PORTIONS OF ERN NY/ERN PA AND NRN NJ. THESE STORMS
WILL CONTINUE SHIFTING EWD ACROSS THE CENTRAL/ERN PORTIONS OF WW 533

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

VALID 011200Z - 021200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM ERN NY/EXTREME WRN NEW
ENGLAND INTO NJ...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER THE CENTRAL/ERN NC AREA...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF THE NRN/CENTRAL
PLAINS...

...SYNOPSIS...
UPPER LOW OVER THE GREAT LAKES IS FORECAST TO MOVE LITTLE THROUGH
TOMORROW AS A SERIES OF SHORT WAVE TROUGHS ROTATE AROUND THE
CYCLONIC CIRCULATION. THE UPPER RIDGE OVER THE NRN PLAINS IS
EXPECTED TO WEAKEN AS A SHORT WAVE TROUGH NOW MOVING ACROSS BC AND
THE FAR NRN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION MOVES ACROSS THE CANADIAN PRAIRIES.
FARTHER SOUTH...MODEL GUIDANCE IS IN GOOD AGREEMENT THAT A SHORT
WAVE TROUGH CURRENTLY MOVING NWD AROUND THE WRN PERIPHERY OF THE SRN
PLATEAU UPPER RIDGE WILL TURN EWD ACROSS WY TOMORROW REACHING THE
NRN PLAINS TOMORROW NIGHT.

AT THE SURFACE...OCCLUDED LOW NEAR THE LOWER GREAT LAKES WILL
GRADUALLY WEAKEN. A WEAK FRONT/CONVERGENCE ZONE EXTENDING SSEWD INTO
THE MID ATLANTIC STATES THEN SSWWD INTO THE SRN APPALACHIANS WILL
MOVE EWD ACROSS THE MID ATLANTIC REGION AND CAROLINAS. OVER THE
PLAINS REGION...A LOW OVER NRN WY WILL MOVE EWD/SEWD INTO THE NEB
PANHANDLE REGION DURING THE DAY...THEN DEVELOP SEWD INTO THE CENTRAL
HIGH PLAINS AT NIGHT. A COLD FRONT NORTH OF THE WY LOW IS FORECAST
TO MOVE EWD ACROSS MT AND THE HIGH PLAINS...WITH A WARM FRONT
EXTENDING SSEWD FROM THE LOW INTO THE SRN PLAINS.

...NJ NWD INTO ERN NY/EXTREME WRN NEW ENGLAND...
STRONG CONVECTION IS LIKELY TO DEVELOP AGAIN TOMORROW IN ADVANCE OF
THE UPPER LOW OVER THE LOWER GREAT LAKES REGION. GFS SURFACE
PATTERN IS FOLLOWED MORE CLOSELY OVER THIS AREA WITH A NNW/SSE
CONVERGENCE ZONE ACROSS ERN NY INTO NJ. SURFACE DEW POINTS ARE
EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN THE UPPER 50S/LOWER 60S...AND AN AXIS OF
MAXIMUM INSTABILITY IS FORECAST TO DEVELOP ALONG THE CONVERGENCE
ZONE. ALTHOUGH COVERAGE OF CONVECTION WILL BE MODULATED BY CLOUD
COVER AND LOCATIONS OF ENHANCED DIURNAL HEATING...RELATIVELY COOL
MID-LEVEL TEMPERATURES AND LARGE SCALE ASCENT AHEAD OF THE LOW WILL
AID IN DEVELOPMENT OF THUNDERSTORMS. STRONGER CELLS WILL BE CAPABLE
OF PRODUCING LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WIND GUSTS MAINLY DURING THE
AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING.

...CENTRAL/ERN NC AREA...
SEVERE RISK IS CONDITIONAL UPON THE INITIATION AND MAINTENANCE OF
ISOLATED/WIDELY SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS. MODEL GUIDANCE HAS
PROVIDED MIXED SIGNALS CONCERNING THE FORMATION OF CONVECTION...WITH
12Z NAM AND A NUMBER OF SREF MEMBERS INDICATING DEVELOPMENT OF
PRECIPITATION DURING THE AFTERNOON IN ADVANCE OF THE COLD FRONT. IF
LOW LEVEL MOISTURE IS ABLE TO INCREASE AHEAD OF THE FRONT TO AROUND
60F...FORECAST SOUNDINGS INDICATE SUFFICIENT INSTABILITY AND MINIMAL
CAP TO SUPPORT A FEW THUNDERSTORMS. THE REGION WILL BE WITHIN A
BAND OF 35-40 KT WESTERLY MID LEVEL FLOW ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE
UPPER LOW...WITH SUFFICIENT VERTICAL SHEAR TO PROMOTE STORM
ORGANIZATION WITH ANY SUSTAINED UPDRAFTS THAT DEVELOP. STRONG
DIURNAL HEATING WILL STEEPEN LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND ENHANCE
POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WIND GUSTS WITH STRONGER STORMS.

...PARTS OF THE NRN/CENTRAL PLAINS...
A LOW LEVEL MOISTURE AXIS WITH SURFACE DEW POINTS IN THE 60S IS
FORECAST TO PERSIST FROM THE NRN HIGH PLAINS SWD INTO THE CENTRAL
PLAINS NEAR THE AFOREMENTIONED SURFACE FRONT. THE ERN EDGE OF THE
REGION OF STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL EXTEND INTO THE
PLAINS...AND WITH STRONG HEATING LIKELY TO OCCUR DURING THE
DAY...THE ENVIRONMENT WILL BECOME MODERATELY UNSTABLE WITH MLCAPE OF
1500-2500 J/KG.

THUNDERSTORM ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP BY MID/LATE AFTERNOON OVER
PARTS OF THE NRN HIGH PLAINS AS THE CAP WEAKENS AND DYNAMIC FORCING
PROVIDED BY THE SHORT WAVE TROUGH INCREASES ACROSS THE AREA. DEEP
LAYER SHEAR OF 35-45 KT WILL ENHANCE STORM ORGANIZATION AND
INTENSITY AND PROMOTE DEVELOPMENT OF A FEW SUPERCELLS...WITH PRIMARY
THREATS FOR LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. STORMS ARE LIKELY TO
GROW UPSCALE INTO A SEWD MOVING MCS DURING THE EVENING AS THE
NOCTURNAL LOW LEVEL JET STRENGTHENS OVER THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS
AFTER SUNSET. THE CONVECTION IS EXPECTED TO TRACK INTO PARTS OF NEB
AND POSSIBLY EXTREME NRN KS BY THE END OF THE PERIOD WITH A
CONTINUED THREAT FOR DAMAGING WINDS AND HAIL DURING THE OVERNIGHT
HOURS.
