SPC AC 071239

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0739 AM CDT WED SEP 07 2011

VALID 071300Z - 081200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF THE MID ATLANTIC
STATES...

...SYNOPSIS...
REMNANT UPR LOW ASSOCIATED WITH FORMER T.D. LEE...NOW OVER ERN
KY...WILL DRIFT ONLY VERY SLOWLY N THIS PERIOD AS THE WLYS REMAIN
WELL TO THE NORTH IN CANADA...AND BLOCKING RIDGES PERSIST OVER THE
NRN RCKYS AND N ATLANTIC. REMNANT LOW LVL CIRCULATION OF LEE...NOW
IN SW VA...SHOULD FURTHER WEAKEN AS IT REFORMS W/NW ACROSS WV
TODAY...AND INTO OH TNGT/EARLY THU. SHALLOW SW-NE FRONT EXTENDING
NEWD FROM LEE ACROSS ERN MD INTO SRN NJ EXPECTED TO ADVANCE FARTHER
NW ACROSS CNTRL MD/SE PA AND PARTS OF NJ TODAY/TNGT.

...MID-ATLANTIC/DELMARVA THIS AFTN/EVE...
DEEP UNIDIRECTIONAL SLY FLOW/WARM CONVEYOR BELT ON E SIDE OF KY/OH
UPR LOW...WITH PW AOA 2 INCHES...WILL REMAIN NEARLY STNRY ACROSS THE
CNTRL APPALACHIANS AND THE ADJACENT PIEDMONT THROUGH TNGT AS THE LOW
DRIFTS/ELONGATES SLOWLY NWD. EXTENSIVE...N-S CONVECTIVE BAND WITHIN
THE CONVEYOR BELT...NOW EXTENDING FROM NEAR RIC TO NEAR
BWI/MDT...LIKEWISE ALSO WILL EXHIBIT LITTLE NET EWD MOVEMENT. AT
THE SAME TIME...SHALLOW SW-NE WARM FRONT WILL ADVANCE SLOWLY NW
ACROSS PARTS OF VA...MD...SE PA...AND SRN NJ TODAY...LEAVING A
NARROWING TONGUE OF RESIDUAL COOLER LOW LEVEL AIR DAMNED ALONG THE
ERN SLOPES OF THE MOUNTAINS FROM CNTRL VA INTO S CNTRL PA.

MID LVL LAPSE RATES ACROSS REGION WILL REMAIN WEAK. BUT WITH SFC
DEWPOINTS RISING INTO THE LOW TO MID 70S F...DAYTIME HEATING ALONG
AND SE OF THE WARM FRONT SHOULD BOOST SBCAPE TO AROUND 1500 J/KG.
COUPLED WITH CONFLUENT LOW LVL FLOW IN ERN QUADRANT OF VERTICALLY
STACKED SFC AND UPR LVL LOWS...SETUP SHOULD SUPPORT INTENSIFICATION
OF THE CONVECTIVE BAND...ESPECIALLY AS IT BECOMES NEARLY CO-LOCATED
WITH THE FRONT. MORE WIDELY SCTD SHOWERS/STORMS MAY FORM E/S OF THE
FRONT ACROSS THE CHESAPEAKE BAY...THE DELMARVA PENINSULA...AND
SRN/CNTRL NJ.

ALTHOUGH LOW TO MID TROPOSPHERIC WINDS WITH THE REMNANTS OF LEE WILL
BE DIMINISHED RELATIVE TO RECENT DAYS...CURRENT OBSERVATIONS AND
MODEL FCSTS SUGGEST THAT SUFFICIENT /35+ KT/ UNIDIRECTIONAL SLY FLOW
IN THE 850-500 MB LAYER WILL REMAIN PRESENT TO SUPPORT SUSTAINED
STORMS WITH SMALL BOWS AND LOCALLY DMGG WIND. THE POSSIBILITY ALSO
WILL EXIST FOR LOW LVL MESOCYCLONES/INTERMITTENT SUPERCELL
STRUCTURES POSING A RISK FOR TORNADOES GIVEN THAT NEAR-SFC FLOW
LIKELY WILL REMAIN SELY...ESPECIALLY NEAR WARM FRONT.

THE GREATEST SVR RISK SHOULD EXIST FROM MIDDAY THROUGH EARLY THIS
EVE...WITH WEAKENING INSTABILITY/WINDS YIELDING A MUCH DIMINISHED
THREAT TNGT. THROUGHOUT THE PERIOD...COMBINATION OF HIGH PW WITH
DEEP UNIDIRECTIONAL FLOW AND MINIMAL PROGRESSION OF N-S CONVEYOR
BELT WILL YIELD A SERIOUS THREAT FOR CONVECTIVELY-ENHANCED FLASH
FLOODING /SEE HPC FORECASTS FOR DETAILS/.

THE MEDIUM RANGE MODELS BEGIN THE DAY 4 TO 8 PERIOD WITH AN
UPPER-LEVEL LOW OVER THE MID-MS VALLEY ON SATURDAY/DAY 4. THE MODELS
WEAKEN THIS SYSTEM ON SUNDAY/DAY 5 BUT THE GFS AND ECMWF DIVERGE
SHARPLY WITH THEIR SOLUTIONS EARLY THIS UPCOMING WEEK. ON MONDAY/DAY
6...THE ECMWF DEVELOPS AN UPPER-LEVEL LOW OVER THE WRN GULF OF
MEXICO BUT THE GFS DOES NOT...GRADUALLY MOVING AN EAST COAST TROUGH
TOWARD THE ATLANTIC. IF THE ECMWF SOLUTION IS CLOSER TO
VERIFYING...THEN A SEVERE THREAT WOULD BE POSSIBLE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO
MONDAY ALONG THE CNTRL GULF COAST IN RESPONSE TO THE UPPER-LEVEL
LOW. THIS SEVERE THREAT WOULD GRADUALLY SHIFT EWD INTO THE ERN GULF
COAST STATES ON TUESDAY/DAY 7. IN CONTRAST...THE GFS MOVES AN
UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH SEWD OUT OF SRN CANADA WITH A MOIST AXIS LOCATED
IN THE UPPER MIDWEST AHEAD OF THE SYSTEM. STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WOULD
BE POSSIBLE ON MONDAY/DAY 6 IN THE UPPER-MS VALLEY IF THE GFS
SOLUTION WERE CLOSE TO BEING CORRECT. AT THIS POINT...DIFFERING
MODEL SOLUTIONS INTRODUCE A LARGE AMOUNT OF UNCERTAINTY INTO THE DAY
4 TO 8 PERIOD SO WILL NOT FORECAST A SEVERE THREAT AREA DUE TO LOW
PREDICTABILITY.

AN UPPER-LEVEL LOW IS FORECAST TO REMAIN NEARLY STATIONARY ACROSS
THE MID-MS VALLEY ON FRIDAY. WELL TO THE EAST OF THE UPPER-LEVEL
LOW...AN AXIS OF LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE IS FORECAST ACROSS THE
MID-ATLANTIC WHERE SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS MAY INITIATE FRIDAY
AFTERNOON. GFS FORECAST SOUNDINGS AT 21Z FRIDAY SHOW A SMALL POCKET
OF MODERATE INSTABILITY ACROSS ERN PA AND NJ BUT IN A RELATIVELY
WEAKLY SHEARED ENVIRONMENT. DEEP LAYER SHEAR IS FORECAST TO BE ABOUT
25 KT WHICH COMBINED WITH MLCAPE VALUES AROUND 1000 J/KG WILL
PROBABLY NOT BE ENOUGH FOR A SEVERE THREAT FRIDAY AFTERNOON.
ELSEWHERE ACROSS THE CONUS...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY IS NOT
EXPECTED FRIDAY OR FRIDAY NIGHT.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE MID-ATLANTIC
STATES/DELMARVA VICINITY...

...SYNOPSIS...
INCREASINGLY BLOCKY LARGE SCALE PATTERN WILL EVOLVE THROUGH THE
PERIOD...AS AN EASTERN STATES CYCLONE /REMOVED FROM THE STRONGER
HIGH-LATITUDE WESTERLIES/ PIVOTS SLOWLY NORTHWARD ACROSS THE TN/OH
VALLEYS. THE PRIMARY SEVERE POTENTIAL FOR THE PERIOD WILL BE
RELEGATED TO THE MID-ATLANTIC STATES/DELMARVA VICINITY...WITH TSTMS
ALSO POSSIBLE ACROSS FL /ALONG AND SOUTH OF A STALLED FRONT/ AND
PORTIONS OF THE WEST INCLUDING THE FOUR CORNERS AREA MAINLY THIS
AFTERNOON.

...MID-ATLANTIC STATES/DELMARVA...
THE EASTERN CONUS CYCLONE/LEE REMNANTS WILL CONTINUE TO BECOME MORE
BAROCLINIC/EXHIBIT CONSIDERABLY MORE MID-LATITUDE CHARACTERISTICS AS
THE CLOSED/SEMI-STACKED CYCLONE SLOWLY SHIFTS NORTHWARD OVER THE
TN/OH RIVER VALLEYS. IN A SYSTEM-RELATIVE SENSE...OVERALL CONDITIONS
ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO TREND LESS FAVORABLE FOR TORNADOES
TODAY. NONETHELESS...THE POTENTIAL WILL EXIST TODAY FOR A TORNADO OR
TWO AND/OR WIND DAMAGE ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE DELMARVA AND PERHAPS
SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF PA/NJ.

WITH THE REGION ON THE EASTERN EDGE OF DEEP/CYCLONIC SOUTHERLY LOW
TO MID-TROPOSPHERIC FLOW...A MOIST/HIGH PW AIRMASS AS GENERALLY
CHARACTERIZED BY LOWER 70S F SURFACE DEWPOINTS WILL ACCOMPANY A
NORTHWARD-SHIFTING WARM FRONT ACROSS THE REGION. WITH THE AIRMASS
EXPECTED TO DIURNALLY DESTABILIZE TO THE EAST OF THE COLD FRONT AND
ESPECIALLY ALONG COASTAL AREAS BY THIS AFTERNOON...A RELATIVELY
FAVORABLE NORTH-SOUTH CORRIDOR OF DEEP LAYER/LOW-LEVEL SHEAR AND
NEAR-SURFACE BUOYANCY WILL LEAD TO ISOLATED TORNADO AND/OR WIND
DAMAGE POTENTIAL.

MAINLY DURING THE DAYLIGHT HOURS...THE PRIMARY TORNADO THREAT WILL
LIKELY BE QUASI-FOCUSED NEAR THE NORTHWARD-SHIFTING WARM FRONT AND
THE IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT WARM SECTOR. THIS IS WHERE LOW LEVEL SRH
WILL LIKELY BE MAXIMIZED...AND INCLUDES THE EASTERN HALVES OF VA/MD
AND CHESAPEAKE BAY VICINITY INTO SOUTHERN PA AND PERHAPS DE/SOUTHERN
NJ. WIND DAMAGE WILL OTHERWISE BE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE REGION...AS
MODERATE POTENTIAL INSTABILITY AND ADEQUATELY STRONG AND
SEMI-UNIDIRECTIONAL WIND PROFILES /ESPECIALLY AWAY FROM THE WARM
FRONT/ WILL YIELD BANDS OF NORTHWARD-MOVING STRONG/SEVERE STORMS
WITH POSSIBLE SMALL SCALE BOWS/WIND DAMAGE.

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

AN UPPER-LEVEL LOW OVER THE OH VALLEY THURSDAY WILL RETROGRADE
SLOWLY WWD REACHING THE MID-MS VALLEY THURSDAY NIGHT. TO THE EAST OF
THE UPPER-LEVEL LOW...MODEL FORECASTS INITIATE SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE MID-ATLANTIC AND CNTRL APPALACHIAN MTNS
THURSDAY AFTERNOON ALONG A WELL-DEFINED MOIST AXIS. MODEL FORECASTS
ARE IN DISAGREEMENT CONCERNING HOW MUCH DESTABILIZATION WILL TAKE
PLACE THURSDAY ALONG THE MOIST AXIS WITH THE GFS BEING A MORE
AGGRESSIVE SOLUTION. GFS FORECAST SOUNDINGS THURSDAY AT 21Z ALONG
THE MOIST AXIS SHOW MLCAPE AROUND 1500 J/KG WITH 20 TO 25 KT OF DEEP
LAYER SHEAR WHICH COULD BE SUFFICIENT FOR A MARGINAL WIND DAMAGE
THREAT IF THE FORECAST INSTABILITY CAN BE REALIZED. HOWEVER...DEEP
LAYER SHEAR AND LAPSE RATES SHOULD REMAIN ON THE WEAK SIDE ACROSS
THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION AND THIS WILL LIKELY BE A LIMITING FACTOR
FOR A SEVERE THREAT. ATTM...WILL NOT ADD A 5 PERCENT SEVERE
PROBABILITY. ELSEWHERE ACROSS THE CONUS...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM
ACTIVITY IS NOT ANTICIPATED THURSDAY OR THURSDAY NIGHT.
