VALID 241713Z - 242315Z

MIXED PRECIPITATION TYPES FROM NEAR MANHATTAN KS TO WHITEMAN AFB IN
MO NWD TO THE KANSAS CITY METRO AREA WERE BEING REPORTED AS OF 17Z.
SFC ANALYSIS SHOWED STRONG ARCTIC HIGH PRESSURE JUST TO THE N OF THE
AREA AND SFC TEMPERATURES SHOULD EVENTUALLY FALL BELOW FREEZING
THROUGH WET BULB PROCESSES AND WEAK LOW LEVEL CAA. EXPECT PRECIP
TYPE TO CHANGE TO ALL SNOW BY AROUND 19-20Z.

17Z SFC ANALYSIS INDICATED A WARM FRONT FROM ERN OK ACROSS CNTRL AR.
ISENTROPIC ASCENT OVER THE FRONT WILL WRAP ABUNDANT MOISTURE AROUND
MID LEVEL LOW /LOCATED OVER SRN KS/NRN OK AT 18Z PER 12Z NAM
FORECAST/ INTO MCD AREA. FORCING FOR ASCENT WILL BE ENHANCED BY
INCREASING DEEP LAYER FLOW /850 MB WINDS 40 KT...50KT AT 500MB/ AND
A VORTICITY MAX LIFTING NEWD FROM SERN KS INTO NWRN MO THROUGH 21Z.
12Z NAM FORECASTS ALSO INDICATE MODEST POTENTIAL FOR SLANTWISE
CONVECTION AND BANDED PRECIPITATION.

MIXED PRECIPITATION TYPES WILL LIKELY CONTINUE OVER SRN PORTIONS OF
THE MCD AREA FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. THEREAFTER...ALL SNOW IS
EXPECTED WITH RATES APPROACHING ONE INCH PER HOUR BY 20-21Z.
PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO END BY EARLY EVENING AS LOW PRESSURE

DAY2SVR: Nws Storm Prediction Center Norman Ok

ACUS02 KWNS 241659
SWODY2
SPC AC 241657

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1057 AM CST THU FEB 24 2011

VALID 251200Z - 261200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
MODELS INDICATE THAT BLOCKING WILL REMAIN PROMINENT WITHIN THE UPPER
PATTERN OVER THE EASTERN PACIFIC...WITH DOWNSTREAM SPLIT FLOW
BROADLY CONFLUENT ACROSS MUCH OF NORTH AMERICA...AND RATHER STRONG
AND GENERALLY ZONAL ACROSS THE U.S. IN PARTICULAR. WITHIN THIS
REGIME A LARGE SHORT WAVE TROUGH AND EMBEDDED CLOSED LOW ARE PROGGED
TO CONTINUE DIGGING NEAR THE PACIFIC COAST FRIDAY...WHILE A
SIGNIFICANT DOWNSTREAM PERTURBATION RAPIDLY ACCELERATES EAST OF THE
OHIO VALLEY INTO THE WESTERN ATLANTIC.

...APPALACHIANS INTO ATLANTIC SEABOARD...
SUBSTANTIAL FURTHER DEEPENING OF THE CYCLONE ASSOCIATED WITH THE
LATTER FEATURE APPEARS PROBABLE AS IT MIGRATES NORTHEAST OF THE
UPPER OHIO VALLEY INTO AREAS OFF THE NORTH ATLANTIC COAST...AND
EVENTUALLY THE CANADIAN MARITIMES. THIS WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY
FURTHER INTENSIFICATION OF LOW- AND MID-LEVEL WIND FIELDS THROUGH A
BROAD WARM SECTOR OVERSPREADING MUCH OF THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD...WITH
GUIDANCE SUGGESTING STRENGTHENING OF A SOUTHERLY 850 MB JET FROM 70
TO 90 KTS FROM THE LEE OF THE SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL APPALACHIANS INTO
AREAS EAST OF THE MID AND NORTHERN ATLANTIC COAST BY LATE FRIDAY
AFTERNOON.

STRONGEST DIVERGENCE ALOFT ASSOCIATED WITH A COUPLED MID/UPPER JET
STRUCTURE IS PROGGED TO RAPIDLY SHIFT NORTHEAST OF THE CENTRAL
APPALACHIANS/UPPER OHIO VALLEY AND LOWER GREAT LAKES REGION...ALONG
AND NORTH OF THE SURFACE WARM FRONT...EARLY IN THE DAY. AS THIS
OCCURS...A WEAKENING PRE-COLD FRONTAL CONVECTIVE BAND NEAR THE
APPALACHIANS AT THE OUTSET OF THE FORECAST PERIOD PROBABLY WILL
WEAKEN FURTHER AS IT ADVANCES TOWARD THE ATLANTIC COAST. THIS BAND
APPEARS LIKELY TO PROGRESS ACROSS MID ATLANTIC COASTAL AREAS FIRST
AROUND MIDDAY...THEN LATER IN THE AFTERNOON ACROSS SOUTHERN ATLANTIC
AND NORTHEASTERN GULF COASTAL AREAS.

CLEARING IN THE WAKE OF THIS INITIAL BAND MAY ALLOW A WINDOW OF
OPPORTUNITY FOR PRE-FRONTAL SURFACE HEATING AND RENEWED CONVECTIVE
DEVELOPMENT DURING THE AFTERNOON FROM THE LEE OF THE CENTRAL
APPALACHIANS INTO THE NORTHERN MID ATLANTIC COAST...AIDED BY A
SECONDARY ZONE OF FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH THE PASSAGE OF THE
MID-LEVEL TROUGH AXIS. HOWEVER...SOMEWHAT MODEST BOUNDARY LAYER
MOISTENING AND WEAK LAPSE RATES WITHIN/ABOVE THE WARM SECTOR MAY BE
PROBLEMATIC WITH RESPECT TO DESTABILIZATION. IT IS NOT EVEN CLEAR
THAT THERMODYNAMIC PROFILES WILL BECOME SUPPORTIVE OF CONVECTION
CAPABLE OF PRODUCING LIGHTNING...AND THUNDERSTORM PROBABILITIES
ALONG AND EAST OF THE APPALACHIANS IN GENERAL MAY NOT BE MUCH ABOVE
THE MINIMUM 10 PERCENT THRESHOLD FOR A THUNDER OUTLOOK.

REGARDLESS...GIVEN THE LARGE MAGNITUDE OF THE LOW-LEVEL AND DEEP
LAYER MEAN FLOW FIELDS...ANY WARM SECTOR CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT MAY
BE CAPABLE OF CONTRIBUTING TO THE DOWNWARD TRANSFER OF HIGHER
MOMENTUM AIR TO THE SURFACE. CONVECTIVE ENHANCEMENT OF SURFACE
GUSTS TO SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGING SPEEDS SEEMS LIKELY TO REMAIN RATHER
SPARSE IN COVERAGE...SO SEVERE PROBABILITIES BELOW SLIGHT RISK
LEVELS HAVE BEEN MAINTAINED. BUT...THE THREAT AREA HAS BEEN
EXPANDED TO ENCOMPASS MUCH OF THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD.

...THERE IS A MDT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF THE LWR MS AND LWR
TN VLYS...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS SURROUNDING THE MDT RISK
AREA...FROM THE SRN PLNS ENE INTO THE LWR OH VLY...

...SYNOPSIS...
STRONG S/W TROUGH NOW SRN HI PLAINS ON TRACK AND WILL RESULT IN
SURFACE CYCLOGENESIS ACROSS ERN OK THIS AFTERNOON. SYSTEM BOTH
SURFACE AND ALOFT WILL DEEPEN TONIGHT AS LOW CENTER TRACKS ACROSS
NRN AR INTO KY. WARM FRONT NOW ACROSS ERN OK INTO CENTRAL AR AND
SRN TN WILL LIFT NWD THIS AFTERNOON ALLOWING A MOIST WARM SECTOR TO
SPREAD ACROSS MUCH OF LOWER MS VLY INTO TN VALLEY.

COMBINATION OF STRENGTHENING WIND FIELD AND ASCENT WITH PROGRESSIVE
TROUGH...CONTINUED MOISTURE INFLOW /WITH PW INCREASING TO AOA 1.50
INCHES/...AND DIURNAL HEATING EXPECTED TO SUPPORT AN OUTBREAK OF SVR
TSTMS OVER PARTS OF AR/TN AND ADJACENT STATES LATER THIS AFTERNOON
INTO TONIGHT.

...SERN OK/ERN TX ENE INTO THE LWR TN VLY/LWR OH VLYS...
BY EARLY AFTERNOON MODERATE SFC HEATING WITH TEMPS RISING THRU THE
70S WILL LEAD TO SUFFICIENT INSTABILITY...MLCAPES AOA 1000 J/KG...TO
SUPPORT NUMEROUS BANDS/CLUSTERS OF TSTMS ACROSS NERN TX INTO SERN
OK/WRN AR AS 90-120 METER MID-LVL HEIGHT FALLS WITH UPR IMPULSE
SWEEP ENEWD.

RELATIVELY STEEP MID-LVL LAPSE RATES...7C/KM...AND SIZABLE
CLOUD-LAYER SHEAR SUGGEST POTENTIAL FOR HAIL AND
POSSIBLY SHORT-LIVED BOWING SEGMENTS WITH HIGH WIND AS THE STORMS
MOVE/DEVELOP MAINLY ENEWD.

A FEW STORMS ALSO MAY FORM NEAR INTENSIFYING WARM FRONT
EXTENDING ENE FROM THE DEVELOPING SURFACE LOW ERN OK/WRN AR INTO
WRN/MIDDLE TN.

WITH LOW TO MID-LVL SHEAR INCREASING SUBSTANTIALLY BY LATER THIS
AFTERNOON ASSOCIATED WITH APPROACHING UPR IMPULSE OVERSPREADING THE
REGION...ARKANSAS AREA STORMS WILL POSE A THREAT FOR HIGH-IMPACT SVR
WEATHER INCLUDING SUPERCELLS WITH BOWING SEGMENTS/HIGH WINDS...LARGE
HAIL...AND POSSIBLY STRONG TORNADOES. THE TORNADO THREAT WOULD
APPEAR TO BE GREATEST FROM LATE THIS AFTN THROUGH EARLY TONIGHT NEAR
WARM FRONT OVER CNTRL/NERN AR AND WRN/MIDDLE TN...WHERE 300-400
M2/S2 0-1KM SRH WILL EXIST INVOF DEEPENING SFC LOW.

THERE IS SOME CONCERN THAT THE CURRENT MDT MAY BE A LITTLE FAR N
INTO SRN KY GIVEN THE CURRENT VERY COOL BOUNDARY LAYER...HOWEVER
WITH THE TRACK OF THE DEEPENING SURFACE LOW ACROSS THIS AREA THERE
IS AT LEAST A THREAT OF AN ORGANIZED DAMAGING WIND THREAT AS WELL AS
EMBEDDED SUPERCELLS AND TORNADOS. THUS WILL NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES IN
THE MDT RISK ATTM.

THE STORMS SHOULD EVOLVE INTO AN EXTENSIVE QLCS BY MID-EVE...WITH
OVERALL LINE MOVEMENT TO THE ENE ACROSS TN/LWR OH VLYS...AND
DEVELOPMENT SWD INTO LA/MS/AL THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT. A CONTINUING
THREAT DMGG WIND AND ISOLD TORNADOES LIKELY WILL PERSIST WELL INTO
THE NIGHT...ESPECIALLY NEAR TRACK OF SFC LOW ...AND FARTHER S IN
AREA OF GREATER SFC-BASED BUOYANCY IN MIDDLE TN...MS...AND NRN/WRN
AL.
