DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 200058
SWODY1
SPC AC 200055

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0755 PM CDT SAT SEP 19 2009

VALID 200100Z - 201200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...NRN ROCKIES/HIGH PLAINS...
A MID/UPPER LEVEL TROUGH...CURRENTLY MOVING EWD THROUGH THE PACIFIC
NW PER WATER VAPOR IMAGERY...WILL UNDERGO SOME AMPLIFICATION TONIGHT
AS IT PROGRESSES EWD TOWARD THE NRN ROCKIES. AN ATTENDANT COLD
FRONT IS EXPECTED TO MOVE ACROSS MT THIS FORECAST PERIOD...REACHING
THE FAR WRN DAKOTAS BORDER BY 12Z SUNDAY. TSTMS WILL BE POSSIBLE...
GENERALLY ALONG AND IN THE POST-FRONTAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE COLD
FRONT. ALTHOUGH A CORRIDOR OF WEAK INSTABILITY WILL PRECEDE THE
FRONT...STRONGER DEEP LAYER SHEAR IS EXPECTED TO BE WEST OF THE
FRONT. THIS WILL LIKELY PRECLUDE THE THREAT FOR SEVERE WEATHER.

...PARTS OF TN/LOWER OH VALLEYS...
MODELS SUGGEST SHOWERS/EMBEDDED TSTMS SHOULD BECOME MORE LIKELY
LATER THIS EVENING/OVERNIGHT FROM NRN MS/AL INTO LOWER OH VALLEY AS
LOW LEVEL WAA INCREASES SOME ALONG STRENGTHENING SLY LLJ /30-35 KT/
ACROSS THIS REGION. WEAK INSTABILITY/LAPSE RATES AND WEAK SHEAR
WILL PRECLUDE A SEVERE WEATHER THREAT.

...CENTRAL/SRN GA...
COLD POOL ENHANCED LINE OF TSTMS EXTENDING FROM WEST CENTRAL INTO
SWRN GA EARLY THIS EVENING MAY PERSIST FOR THE NEXT HOUR OR SO.
HOWEVER...THIS ACTIVITY IS MOVING INTO A MORE STABLE AIR MASS PER
OBJECTIVE ANALYSES AND GIVEN THE OVERALL LOSS OF DAYTIME HEATING.
HEAVY RAINFALL RATES WILL BE THE PRIMARY THREAT THIS EVENING SINCE
WEAK LAPSE RATES/INSTABILITY AND WEAK SHEAR WILL PRECLUDE A SEVERE
WEATHER THREAT.

...ELSEWHERE...
THE LOSS OF DAYTIME HEATING WILL STABILIZE THE BOUNDARY LAYER AND
PRECLUDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADDITIONAL TSTMS...WITH ANY LINGERING
ACTIVITY EXPECTED TO WEAKEN DURING THE NEXT HOUR OR TWO.

..PETERS.. 09/20/2009

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK CORR 1
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0410 PM CDT SAT SEP 19 2009

VALID 192000Z - 201200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

CORRECTED TO SWITCH ARROW ON 5 % WIND GRAPHIC

ONE CHANGE TO THE OUTLOOK IS TO ADD A 5 PERCENT WIND PROBABILITY
OVER ECNTRL AZ. THE 12Z FLAGSTAFF SOUNDING SHOWED ABOUT 1000 J/KG OF
MUCAPE WITH THE RUC ANALYZING A SMALL POCKET OF MODERATE INSTABILITY
/MLCAPE 1000-1500 J/KG/ NORTHEAST OF PHOENIX. THUNDERSTORMS ARE
INCREASING IN COVERAGE ALONG THE MOGOLLON RIM ON THE NRN EDGE OF THE
STRONGER INSTABILITY WHERE LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES ARE QUITE STEEP.
THIS MAY BE ENOUGH FOR A FEW MARGINALLY SEVERE DAMAGING WIND GUSTS
THIS AFTERNOON. ANOTHER MINOR CHANGE IS TO REMOVE THUNDER FROM THE
CNTRL OK AREA.

..BROYLES.. 09/19/2009

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1122 AM CDT SAT SEP 19 2009/

...SYNOPSIS...
A PRONOUNCED NRN STREAM MID LEVEL TROUGH IS MOVING EWD OVER WA/ORE
THIS MORNING...AND WILL CONTINUE EWD OVER THE NRN ROCKIES THROUGH
TONIGHT. INCREASING HEIGHT FALLS AND MEAN FLOW OVER THE PLAINS
/DOWNSTREAM FROM THE PAC NW TROUGH/ WILL BEGIN TO RESULT IN SLOW EWD
PROGRESSION OF THE SERIES OF VORTICITY CENTERS EMBEDDED IN THE
BROAD/WEAK LOW NOW CENTERED OVER KS/OK.

THE RICHEST MOISTURE PLUME AND MORE CONCENTRATED CONVECTION IS
EXPECTED TODAY OVER TN/AL IN ADVANCE OF DIFFUSE EMBEDDED MID LEVEL
TROUGH OVER THE LOWER MS VALLEY...WHICH WILL TEND TO SPREAD SLOWLY
NWD OVERNIGHT IN RESPONSE TO THE AMPLIFYING UPSTREAM FLOW REGIME
OVER THE ROCKIES AND CENTRAL/NRN PLAINS. ELSEWHERE...SCATTERED
/MAINLY DIURNAL/ THUNDERSTORMS WILL AGAIN OCCUR TODAY IN ASSOCIATION
WITH DAYTIME HEATING AND ENHANCED MOISTURE/ASCENT WITH THE DIFFUSE
EMBEDDED VORTICITY CENTERS OVER THE FOUR CORNERS STATES. SOME
PORTION OF THE LOW-MID LEVEL MOISTURE PLUME OVER THE NRN GREAT BASIN
/PER THE 12Z SLC SOUNDING/ WILL SPREAD NWD TO SW MT BY LATE
AFTERNOON ALONG THE COLD FRONT WITH THE PAC NW MID LEVEL TROUGH.
GUSTY WINDS WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH HIGH-BASED THUNDERSTORMS...BUT THE
SEVERE STORM THREAT APPEARS QUITE MARGINAL AT BEST.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1224 PM CDT SAT SEP 19 2009

VALID 201200Z - 211200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...CNTRL PLAINS/MID-MO VALLEY...
A RELATIVELY HIGH-AMPLITUDE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH WILL MOVE EWD AROSS
THE NRN ROCKIES SUNDAY EMBEDDED IN A MUCH LARGER AND BROAD
UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH OVER THE PLAINS STATES AND MS VALLEY. AT THE
SFC...A WELL-DEFINED NORTH TO SOUTH COLD FRONT WILL MOVE EWD INTO
THE HIGH PLAINS. AHEAD OF THE FRONT...LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE WILL
INCREASE NWD ACROSS THE CNTRL PLAINS UNDERNEATH A STRONG CAPPING
INVERSION. ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS APPEAR MOST LIKLEY TO DEVELOP
ALONG THE FRONTAL BOUNDARY IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF NERN CO AND SW
WY SUNDAY AFTERNOON GRADUALLY MOVING EWD INTO THE HIGH PLAINS AND
EXPANDING IN COVERAGE FROM NORTH TO SOUTH FROM SRN SD ACROSS WRN NEB
INTO NW KS BY MID TO LATE SUNDAY EVENING.

FORECAST SOUNDINGS ACROSS THE REGION AT 00Z SHOW STRONG DIRECTIONAL
VEERING BELOW 700 MB BUT LITTLE SPEED SHEAR RESULTING IN 0-6 KM
SHEAR VALUES PEAKING AT ABOUT 25 KT. THE SHEAR SHOULD BE WEAK ENOUGH
TO KEEP ANY SEVERE THREAT MARGINAL. HOWEVER...A FEW OF THE STRONGER
CELLS MAY HAVE A POTENTIAL FOR HAIL DUE TO STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE
RATES EXCEEDING 8.0 C/KM ASSOCIATED WITH AN EML ADVECTING EWD OUT OF
CO AND WY. IN SPITE OF THE INCREASE IN THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY DURING
THE EVENING...FORECAST SOUNDINGS MAINTAIN A STRONG CAPPING INVERSION
SUGGESTING THE ELEVATED CONVECTION WILL HAVE TROUBLE PRODUCING
STRONG WIND GUSTS.

...OH AND TN VALLEYS...
A BROAD UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH WILL BE IN PLACE ACROSS MUCH OF THE CNTRL
AND ERN STATES. A SLIGHTLY MORE AMPLIFIED AND NEGATIVLEY TILTED
SECTION OF THE TROUGH IS FORECAST FROM THE MID-MS VALLEY SEWD ACROSS
THE GULF COAST STATES. SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD BE ONGOING
SUNDAY MORNING ALONG AND AHEAD OF THE AXIS OF THE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH
WITH STORM COVERAGE INCREASING DURING THE AFTERNOON DUE TO
DESTABILIZATION. ALTHOUGH...VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES ACROSS THE
REGION APPEAR ON THE LOW-SIDE FOR SEVERE STORMS...BOUNDARY LAYER
FLOW ASSOCAIATED WITH A LOW-LEVEL JET FROM NE MS NWD INTO IND AND OH
MAY BE ENOUGH FOR A FEW STRONG WIND GUSTS WITH THE MORE PERSISTENT
LINE-SEGMENTS.

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0742 AM CDT SAT SEP 19 2009

VALID 191300Z - 201200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
A DEEPENING UPPER TROUGH WILL SHIFT EWD THROUGH THE PACIFIC NW INTO
THE NRN ROCKIES...WHILE ANOTHER TROUGH EXITS NEW ENGLAND. A PACIFIC
COLD FRONT IS FORECAST TO MOVE EWD AHEAD OF THE NWRN U.S. UPPER
TROUGH AND STRETCH FROM WRN MT INTO NRN CA BY 20/00Z.

IN BETWEEN THESE TWO UPPER TROUGHS...A LONGWAVE RIDGE WILL REMAIN
SITUATED OVER MUCH OF THE CONUS. HOWEVER...WEAK LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM
ALOFT WAS TRAPPED BENEATH THE RIDGE IN THE KS/OK AREA. IN
ASSOCIATION WITH THIS UPPER LOW...WEAK SURFACE LOW PRESSURE/
INVERTED TROUGH SHOULD REMAIN QUASI-STATIONARY NEAR THE MS RIVER
FROM SERN MO SWD INTO SERN LA.

..SERN U.S./TN VALLEY...
COMBINATION OF PERSISTENT WARM ADVECTION AND WEAK SHORTWAVE TROUGHS
ROTATING AROUND UPPER LOW SHOULD PROVIDE FOCUS FOR SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS. ALTHOUGH SHEAR WILL BE WEAK TODAY...EFFECTIVE SHEAR
WILL INCREASE SOMEWHAT TONIGHT AS UPPER LOW HEIGHTS GRADUALLY LOWER
AND MID LEVEL WINDS INCREASE TO 20-25 KT OVER THE LOWER MS/TN
VALLEYS. HOWEVER...MARGINAL INSTABILITY...POOR MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES
AND HIGH PW VALUES SUGGEST THAT HEAVY RAINS ARE MORE LIKELY THAN
HAIL OR DAMAGING WINDS.

...ROCKIES...
STRONG SOLAR INSOLATION OVER HIGHER TERRAIN COMBINED WITH 500 MB
TEMPERATURES FROM -10 TO 12C WILL ONCE AGAIN PROVIDE SUFFICIENT
BUOYANCY FOR MOSTLY AFTERNOON/EVENING THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE
SRN/CENTRAL ROCKIES.

AS MID LEVEL HEIGHTS FALL AND LARGE SCALE ASCENT SPREADS IN FROM THE
WEST...SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD DEVELOP ALONG COLD FRONT AS IT
PROGRESSES EWD THROUGH MT/NRN WY LATE TODAY AND TONIGHT.
ALTHOUGH VERTICAL SHEAR WILL STRENGTHEN AS MID LEVEL WIND SPEEDS
INCREASE...VERY MARGINAL INSTABILITY SHOULD PRECLUDE A SEVERE
THREAT.

...DISCUSSION...

LATEST ECMWF/GFS GUIDANCE AND ENSEMBLE MEMBER DATA NOW DIVERGE
SIGNIFICANTLY BEYOND D4 /TUE SEP 22ND/ WITH THE EVOLUTION OF CUT-OFF
LOW. THE GFS RETREGRADES SYSTEM WWD INTO THE SWRN DESERTS BEFORE
WEAKENING IT. IN CONTRAST...THE ECMWF MAINTAINS THE CIRCULATION
OVER THE CNTRL CONUS INTO D7 /FRI SEP 25TH/ BEFORE PHASING IT WITH A
HIGHER LATITUDE IMPULSE. REGARDLESS OF SOLUTION...THE PROSPECT FOR
AN ORGANIZED SEVERE WEATHER EVENT APPEAR RATHER LOW.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK

0129 AM CDT SAT SEP 19 2009

VALID 211200Z - 221200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PORTIONS OF THE CNTRL AND
SRN PLAINS...

...SYNOPSIS...

INTENSE SHORT WAVE TROUGH INITIALLY OVER WY WILL BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE PRIMARY BELT OF POLAR WESTERLIES...FORMING A CUT-OFF
CIRCULATION OVER THE CNTRL/SRN ROCKIES INTO ADJACENT HIGH PLAINS.
IN THE LOW-LEVELS...COLD FRONT WILL INTENSIFY WHILE SURGING SWD
THROUGH THE CNTRL INTO SRN HIGH PLAINS. NERN EXTENSION OF FRONT
WILL MOVE MORE SLOWLY EWD THROUGH THE MID/LOWER MO VALLEY TOWARD MID
MS VALLEY.

...LOWER MO RIVER VALLEY INTO THE SRN PLAINS...

A MOIST...PRE-FRONTAL AIR MASS /I.E. DEWPOINTS IN THE 60S/ WILL BE
OVERSPREAD BY EML PRECEDING MIDLEVEL TROUGH...CONTRIBUTING TO A
MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR MASS BY AFTERNOON FROM LOWER ELEVATIONS OF
THE CNTRL PLAINS THROUGH THE RED RIVER VALLEY. TSTMS MAY BE ONGOING
OR DEVELOP EARLY IN THE PERIOD ALONG FRONT OVER ERN KS/WRN MO WHERE
CAP WILL BE WEAKER. SUBSEQUENT STORM FORMATION IS ANTICIPATED
THROUGH THE DAY SWWD ALONG FRONTAL ZONE AS STRONGER FORCING FOR
ASCENT SPREADS SEWD FROM THE CNTRL ROCKIES. MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGESTS
THAT THE STRONGER DEEP-LAYER WIND FIELDS WILL LAG SURFACE FRONT TO
THE NW. HOWEVER...MODEST VERTICAL SHEAR COUPLED WITH THE STEEP
LAPSE RATES AND MODERATE CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY WILL BE SUPPORTIVE
OF ORGANIZED TSTM CLUSTERS/LINE SEGMENTS CAPABLE OF MAINLY DAMAGING
WINDS AND HAIL.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1211 AM CDT SAT SEP 19 2009

VALID 201200Z - 211200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...

STRONG...POLAR JET STREAK DIGGING SEWD FROM THE PACIFIC NW INTO
CNTRL ROCKIES WILL SUPPORT INTENSIFICATION OF LONG WAVE TROUGH OVER
THE CNTRL CONUS THIS PERIOD. THE MOST NOTABLE REGION OF HEIGHT
FALLS/DYNAMIC FORCING FOR ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM WILL
SPREAD FROM THE NRN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION INTO THE NRN AND CNTRL HIGH
PLAINS. MEANWHILE...SEVERAL VORTICITY MAXIMA LOCATED DOWNSTREAM
FROM LONG WAVE TROUGH AXIS WILL LIFT NEWD THROUGH THE MID MS VALLEY
INTO UPPER GREAT LAKES.

...CNTRL HIGH PLAINS INTO MID MO VALLEY...

EWD ADVECTION OF EML PRECEDING MIDLEVEL TROUGH WILL OCCUR ATOP OF
MOISTENING PRE-FRONTAL BOUNDARY LAYER...SUPPORTING A MODERATELY
UNSTABLE AIR MASS /MLCAPE OF 1000-1500 J PER KG/ BY AFTERNOON OVER
THE CNTRL PLAINS. CAPPING AT THE BASE OF EML WILL LIKELY INHIBIT
SURFACE-BASED STORM FORMATION THROUGH THE DAY ACROSS MUCH OF WARM
SECTOR. THE EXCEPTIONS WILL BE ALONG COLD FRONT OVER WY AND
PRE-FRONTAL TROUGH ALONG THE CNTRL HIGH PLAINS WHERE COMBINATION OF
LOW-LEVEL CONVERGENCE AND DEEPER FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH AMPLIFYING
MIDLEVEL TROUGH OVERCOME CONVECTIVE INHIBITION. THIS STORM
DEVELOPMENT IS EXPECTED TO OCCUR W OF PRIMARY INSTABILITY AXIS
WITHIN ENVIRONMENT OF STEEP LAPSE RATES BUT MARGINAL CONVECTIVE
INSTABILITY. THIS MAY TEND TO LIMIT THE POTENTIAL FOR A MORE
ORGANIZED SEVERE THREAT...THOUGH THE STRONGER STORMS WILL BE CAPABLE
OF GUSTY WINDS AND SOME HAIL.

ADDITIONAL STORMS /LIKELY SLIGHTLY ELEVATED/ ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP
AHEAD OF COLD FRONT SUNDAY NIGHT OVER PORTIONS OF THE MID MO VALLEY
WITHIN ZONE OF STRENGTHENING LOW-LEVEL WAA. THE PRESENCE OF THE
STEEP MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES AND MODEST ELEVATED CONVECTIVE
INSTABILITY WILL BE SUPPORTIVE OF STRONGER UPDRAFTS CAPABLE OF
MAINLY HAIL...WARRANTING LOW SEVERE PROBABILITIES.

...OH/TN VALLEYS...

WEAK SURFACE LOW ASSOCIATED WITH NEWD-EJECTING VORTICITY MAXIMA IS
FORECAST TO DEVELOP NNEWD FROM THE LOWER OH VALLEY INTO LOWER
MI...IN CONJUNCTION WITH WARM FRONT. THIS WILL ALLOW FOR THE NWD
ADVECTION OF A MOIST LOW-LEVEL AIR MASS THROUGH THE OH/TN
VALLEYS...SUPPORTING AN AXIS OF SLIGHT TO MODERATE CONVECTIVE
INSTABILITY /MLCAPE OF 500-1000 J PER KG/. GENERALLY WEAK CAPPING
AND BROAD ASCENT ACROSS WARM SECTOR ARE EXPECTED TO FOSTER CLUSTERS
OF DIURNAL STORMS ACROSS THE REGION...WHICH WILL LIKELY CONTINUE
INTO SUNDAY NIGHT.

LATEST MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGESTS THAT DEEP-LAYER SHEAR WILL REMAIN
SOMEWHAT MARGINAL /I.E. AOB 30 KT THROUGH 6 KM/ WHICH SHOULD LIMIT A
MORE SUBSTANTIAL SEVERE THREAT. HOWEVER...LOCALLY STRONGER
LOW-LEVEL SHEAR IS FORECAST INVOF WARM FRONT AND ALONG LOW TRACK.
AND GIVEN THE MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER CONDITIONS...SOME POTENTIAL WILL
EXIST FOR BRIEF SUPERCELL STRUCTURES CAPABLE OF LOCALLY GUSTY WINDS
AND PERHAPS A BRIEF TORNADO.

SWODY1
SPC AC 190444

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1144 PM CDT FRI SEP 18 2009

VALID 191200Z - 201200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SERN U.S./TN VALLEY...

WEAK WARM ADVECTION REGIME WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE UPCOMING DAY1
PERIOD AS UPPER TROUGH AXIS REMAINS ANCHORED OVER THE SRN PLAINS.
AHEAD OF THE SRN PLAINS TROUGH A FEW WEAK SHORTWAVES WILL EJECT NEWD
ACROSS THE CNTRL GULF STATES INTO THE TN VALLEY. THESE FEATURES
WILL UNDOUBTEDLY ENHANCE CONVECTIVE THREAT...ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE
HIGH PWAT VALUES AND MODEST INSTABILITY...THOUGH PSEUDO-ADIABATIC
LAPSE RATES WILL PERSIST ACROSS THIS REGION. ALTHOUGH MID LEVEL
FLOW BEGINS TO STRENGTHEN SOME ALONG A CORRIDOR FROM ERN TX INTO WRN
TN/KY LATE...H5 FLOW WILL ONLY BE ON THE ORDER OF 15-20KT. THUS
DESPITE VEERING WIND PROFILES THAT MAY SUPPORT WEAK STORM ROTATION
DEEP LAYER BULK SHEAR WILL BE TOO WEAK TO WARRANT ANY MEANINGFUL
THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS.

...ROCKIES...

STRONGEST HEATING IN THE CONUS WILL OCCUR ACROSS THE WRN U.S.
SATURDAY. WITH SUFFICIENTLY COOL MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES ACROSS THIS
REGION THERMODYNAMIC PROFILES SHOULD EXHIBIT MORE THAN ADEQUATE
BUOYANCY FOR ANOTHER ROUND OF SCATTERED
SHOWERS/THUNDERSTORMS...ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE SRN/CNTRL ROCKIES.
FARTHER NORTH ACROSS MT...MID LEVEL HEIGHTS WILL BEGIN TO FALL
ACROSS THE NRN ROCKIES LATE AS A RATHER STRONG SHORTWAVE TROUGH
BEGINS TO DIG SEWD INTO BACK SIDE OF BROAD CNTRL U.S. TROUGH.
ALTHOUGH VERTICAL SHEAR WILL INCREASE SUBSTANTIALLY ACROSS THIS
REGION...AHEAD OF SURGING COLD FRONT...AIRMASS ACROSS THIS REGION
SHOULD NOT BE UNSTABLE ENOUGH TO JUSTIFY SEVERE PROBABILITIES.
