NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1216 PM CDT WED SEP 21 2011

VALID 221200Z - 231200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

AN UPPER-LEVEL LOW OVER THE UPPER GREAT LAKES WILL GRADUALLY FILL ON
THURSDAY AS AN ASSOCIATED UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH MOVES SEWD ACROSS THE
MID-MO VALLEY AND SRN PLAINS. AT THE SFC...A COLD FRONT WILL ADVANCE
SWD ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS...LOWER MS VALLEY AND TN VALLEY EXTENDING
NEWD INTO THE APPALACHIAN MTNS BY MIDDAY ON THURSDAY. SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD INITIATE ALONG AND AHEAD OF THE BOUNDARY
THURSDAY AFTERNOON AS SFC HEATING TAKES PLACE AND LOW-LEVEL
CONVERGENCE INCREASES. FORECAST SOUNDINGS ALONG AND TO THE SOUTHEAST
OF THE FRONT SUGGEST A FEW POCKETS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY COULD
DEVELOP ACROSS THE GULF COAST STATES AND ATLANTIC SEABOARD. WHERE
INSTABILITY BECOMES LOCALLY MAXIMIZED...A FEW STRONG UPDRAFTS WILL
BE POSSIBLE. HOWEVER...DEEP LAYER SHEAR SHOULD GENERALLY REMAIN
BELOW 30 KT ALONG MOST OF THE FRONT WITH LARGE-SCALE ASCENT ALSO
WEAK SUGGESTING THE THREAT FOR STRONG STORMS SHOULD BE VERY
ISOLATED. DUE TO THIS REASONING...HAVE NOT ADDED A LOW-END SEVERE
PROBABILITY FOR THIS OUTLOOK.

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0325 AM CDT WED SEP 21 2011

VALID 241200Z - 291200Z

...DISCUSSION...
MEDIUM-RANGE MODELS CONTINUE TO SHOW A LARGE UPPER VORTEX OVER THE
UPPER GREAT LAKES/MIDWEST/OH VALLEY REGION EARLY IN THE
PERIOD...WHICH THEN MAKES ONLY VERY SLOW PROGRESS EWD WITH TIME. AN
ASSOCIATED SURFACE BAROCLINIC ZONE IS FORECAST TO PERSIST/REFORM
OVER TIME ACROSS THE E COAST STATES...AND WILL LIKELY BE A FOCUS FOR
PERSISTENT CONVECTION/RAINFALL.

THIS UPPER FEATURE AND ASSOCIATED FRONT ARE PROGGED TO REMAIN THE
PRIMARY LARGE-SCALE SYSTEM AFFECTING THE U.S. THROUGH THE
PERIOD...WITH THE LOW EVENTUALLY MOVING OFF THE NORTHEAST U.S. COAST
BY DAY 8. WITH INSTABILITY/SHEAR COMBINATION ACROSS THE ERN STATES
LIKELY TO REMAIN INSUFFICIENT FOR WIDESPREAD/HIGHER-END SEVERE
THREAT...WILL CONTINUE TO REFRAIN FROM HIGHLIGHTING ANY THREAT AREAS
THIS FORECAST.

0224 AM CDT WED SEP 21 2011

VALID 231200Z - 241200Z

...SYNOPSIS...
LARGE UPPER LOW LIKELY TO LIE INVOF THE UPPER GREAT LAKES AT THE
START OF THE PERIOD IS PROGGED TO MAKE VERY LITTLE PROGRESS THROUGH
THE PERIOD. WHILE MORE MINOR DISTURBANCES WILL MOVE THROUGH THE
BROAD CYCLONIC FLOW FIELD AROUND THE PERIPHERY OF THE LOW AND THUS
AFFECT THE GULF AND ATLANTIC COASTAL STATES...THE OVERALL SYSTEM
WILL MOVE LITTLE.

AT THE SURFACE...THE FRONT MOVING ACROSS THE ERN THIRD OF THE U.S.
WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE APPALACHIANS AND INTO THE ATLANTIC COAST
STATES THROUGH THE PERIOD.

A WEAKLY UNSTABLE WARM SECTOR AHEAD OF THE ADVANCING FRONT WILL
AGAIN SUPPORT WIDESPREAD SHOWERS AND EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH
THE ENTIRE PERIOD. HOWEVER...SHEAR/INSTABILITY COMBINATION EXPECTED
ATTM ACROSS THE AREA REMAINS INSUFFICIENT TO WARRANT INCLUSION OF
EVEN LOW SEVERE PROBABILITIES ATTM.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1254 AM CDT WED SEP 21 2011

VALID 221200Z - 231200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
A LARGE UPPER LOW/TROUGH INITIALLY CENTERED INVOF THE UPPER MS
VALLEY WILL MAKE SLOW EWD/SEWD PROGRESS DAY 2...AND WILL REMAIN THE
PRIMARY FEATURE OF INTEREST ALOFT THIS PERIOD.

AN ASSOCIATED SURFACE LOW IS FORECAST TO DRIFT NEWD ACROSS ONTARIO
TOWARD WRN QUEBEC WITH TIME...WHILE THE TRAILING COLD FRONT MAKES
LITTLE EWD PROGRESS ACROSS THE OH/TN/LOWER MS VALLEY REGION BUT A
BIT FASTER SWD PROGRESS ACROSS TX. MEANWHILE...SECONDARY
CYCLOGENESIS IS PROGGED INVOF FL OR JUST OFF THE FL ATLANTIC COAST.

SHOWERS AND A FEW THUNDERSTORMS ARE FORECAST ALONG THE FRONT FROM
THE LOWER GREAT LAKES REGION SWWD INTO TX. LITTLE INSTABILITY BUT
AMPLE SHEAR IS PROGGED ACROSS NRN PORTIONS OF THIS REGION...WITH
SLIGHTLY GREATER CAPE BUT WEAKER SHEAR WITH SWWD EXTENT ALONG THE
FRONT. OVERALL...THIS SUGGESTS THAT ANY SEVERE POTENTIAL SHOULD
REMAIN LOW-END AND QUITE ISOLATED...AND THEREFORE WILL NOT INTRODUCE
SEVERE PROBABILITY LINES TO THE FORECAST ATTM.

OTHER SHOWERS AND SCATTERED STORMS ARE FORECAST OVER THE E
COAST/SOUTHEAST AND OFFSHORE...BENEATH BROAD UPPER CYCLONIC FLOW ON
THE ERN FRINGE OF THE MAIN TROUGH. HERE TOO...CAPE/SHEAR
COMBINATION APPEARS INSUFFICIENT FOR ANY MORE THAN A BRIEF/LOW-END
SEVERE THREAT WITH A STRONGER STORM OR TWO.

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
AN UPPER LOW WILL DRIFT SLOWLY EWD FROM NRN MN ACROSS LAKE SUPERIOR
DURING THE DAY...AS UPPER LEVEL COOLING SPREADS INTO MI WITH A 60-70
KT MID LEVEL SPEED MAX. AT THE SURFACE...OCCLUDED LOW WILL MIRROR
THE UPPER SYSTEM...WITH A DRYLINE MIXING EWD INTO ERN LOWER
MI...CNTRL IND AND INTO WRN OH BY 00Z. AHEAD OF THE
DRYLINE...WIDESPREAD CLOUDS AND SHOWERS ARE ANTICIPATED...WITH
STRONGER STORMS POSSIBLE LATER IN THE DAY.

ELSEWHERE...LOW LEVEL MOISTURE WILL RETURN NWD ACROSS THE SERN
STATES WHERE A WEAKENING SURFACE RIDGE WILL REMAIN. AS
SUCH...CLOUDS...WEAK SHEAR AND POOR LAPSE RATES PROFILES SHOULD
LIMIT ANY SEVERE POTENTIAL HERE.

...LOWER MI INTO OH...
AREAS OF RAIN AND WEAK STORMS ARE LIKELY TO BE ONGOING WITHIN WARM
ADVECTION REGIME AHEAD OF DRYLINE. SOME HEATING IS LIKELY W OF THIS
ACTIVITY FROM LOWER MI INTO IND AND WRN OH LATE. WEAK
CONVERGENCE...STEEPENING LAPSE RATES AND COOLING ALOFT WILL AID IN
THE DEVELOPMENT OF AT LEAST ISOLATED STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS
CAPABLE OF LOW END SEVERE HAIL AND GUSTY WINDS. THIS THREAT WILL BE
MAINLY DIURNALLY DRIVEN...DISSIPATING AFTER SUNSET.
