DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 211937
SWODY1
SPC AC 211934

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0234 PM CDT MON SEP 21 2009

VALID 212000Z - 221200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS THIS AFTN INTO EARLY TONIGHT
FROM SW MO ACROSS OK INTO N TX...

...20Z UPDATE...

...CNTRL/SRN PLAINS...
MODELS ARE SUGGESTIVE THAT STRONGEST HIGH-LEVEL DIVERGENCE WILL
REMAIN GENERALLY FOCUSED ACROSS EASTERN PORTIONS OF THE CENTRAL
PLAINS THROUGH MUCH OF THE REMAINDER OF THE PERIOD. AS A VIGOROUS
SHORT WAVE IMPULSE CONTINUES TO DIG NEAR OR TO THE LEE OF THE
SOUTHERN COLORADO/NORTHERN NEW MEXICO ROCKIES...THIS COULD
STRENGTHEN FOR A PERIOD SOUTHWARD TOWARD THE RED RIVER VALLEY.
BUT...LARGE-SCALE ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH A WEAK FRONTAL WAVE ACROSS
PARTS OF CENTRAL/EASTERN OKLAHOMA STILL SEEMS LIKELY TO PROVIDE THE
PRIMARY FORCING/FOCUS FOR THE MOST SIGNIFICANT NEW STORM DEVELOPMENT
LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. EARLIER OUTLOOK REASONING APPEARS
ON TRACK.

...CNTRL GULF STATES...
A CONVECTIVELY GENERATED OR ENHANCED BOUNDARY EXTENDING ACROSS PARTS
OF CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI AND ALABAMA MAY REMAIN A FOCUS FOR LOW SEVERE
PROBABILITIES INTO THE EVENING HOURS. THIS COULD INCLUDE AN
ISOLATED TORNADO OR TWO...BUT ANY SUCH ACTIVITY STILL APPEARS LIKELY
TO REMAIN RELATIVELY SHORT-LIVED AND LIMITED BY WEAK AMBIENT
LOW-LEVEL FLOW FIELDS/SHEAR PROFILES.

...NEW MEXICO...
IT STILL APPEARS THAT DESTABILIZATION/FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH THE
DIGGING SHORT WAVE IMPULSE...EMBEDDED WITHIN A DEVELOPING
LARGER-SCALE CIRCULATION...WILL BE SUFFICIENT FOR ONE OR TWO
STRONG/MARGINALLY SEVERE STORMS LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
THE STRENGTHENING LOW-LEVEL BAROCLINIC ZONE ON THE EDGE OF STRONGER
SURFACE HEATING APPEARS TO BE CONFINED A BIT CLOSER TO THE HIGHER
TERRAIN...AND THE 5% SEVERE PROBABILITIES HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED
ACCORDINGLY.

..KERR/COOK.. 09/21/2009

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1128 AM CDT MON SEP 21 2009/

...SYNOPSIS...
A MID-UPPER SPEED MAX OVER WRN WY/ERN UT/WRN CO THIS MORNING WILL
DIG SSEWD WHILE THE BROADER SYNOPTIC SYSTEM EVOLVES INTO A CLOSED
MID LEVEL LOW OVER THE HIGH PLAINS THROUGH TONIGHT. AN ASSOCIATED
SURFACE COLD FRONT WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE EWD ACROSS ERN KS/IA/WRN
MO...AND SEWD ACROSS OK AND NW TX THROUGH EARLY TUESDAY. THIS FRONT
WILL SERVE AS THE PRIMARY FOCUS FOR THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT THROUGH
THE PERIOD.

...SRN PLAINS THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING...
BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS OF 65-70 F HAVE RETURNED NWD IN ADVANCE OF
THE COLD FRONT ACROSS TX/OK/SE KS...BENEATH A PLUME OF 7 C/KM MID
LEVEL LAPSE RATES. THE COMBINATION OF ASCENT ALONG THE FRONT AND
DAYTIME HEATING WILL REMOVE THE CONVECTIVE INHIBITION NOTED IN
REGIONAL 12Z SOUNDINGS AND SUPPORT SURFACE-BASED THUNDERSTORM
DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE FRONT AROUND EARLY-MID AFTERNOON
ACROSS KS/OK. CONVECTION IS THEN EXPECTED TO DEVELOP SWD ALONG THE
FRONT TO NEAR THE RESIDUAL LEE CYCLONE TRIPLE POINT IN NW TX...AND
THEN SPREAD SEWD ACROSS CENTRAL/ERN OK AND N/NE TX THIS EVENING INTO
EARLY TONIGHT. THE MORNING ELEVATED THUNDERSTORMS AND CLOUDS OVER
ERN KS WILL TEND TO LIMIT DESTABIZATION TO THE N OF OK THIS
AFTERNOON.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE SYNOPTIC SYSTEM SUGGESTS THAT THE STRONGEST
LOW-MID LEVEL ASCENT AND DEEP LAYER VERTICAL SHEAR WILL BE CONFINED
TO AREAS ALONG AND W OF THE SURFACE COLD FRONT. THIS...COMBINED
WITH DEEP LAYER FLOW/SHEAR LARGELY PARALLEL TO THE FRONT...AND
FRONTAL MOTION TO THE E/SE THAT IS THE SAME OR FASTER THAN CELL
MOTIONS...SUGGESTS THAT CONVECTION WILL LIKELY EVOLVE INTO AN
EXTENSIVE FRONTAL SQUALL LINE BY THIS EVENING. LARGE HAIL AND
DAMAGING WINDS WILL BE THE MAIN CONCERNS AS A RESULT OF RATHER
MODEST WARM SECTOR VERTICAL SHEAR AND AFTERNOON MLCAPE VALUES OF
2000-3000 J/KG.

...NE NM AND VICINITY THIS AFTERNOON...
STRONG MID LEVEL ASCENT IMMEDIATELY DOWNSTREAM FROM THE DIGGING MID
LEVEL TROUGH WILL COINCIDE WITH POST-FRONTAL UPSLOPE FLOW THIS
AFTERNOON ACROSS NE NM. THE INITIAL REFLECTION OF THIS REGIME IS
THE ONGOING CONVECTION THAT IS SPREADING SWD TOWARD S CENTRAL CO
ATTM...AND THIS BAND OF THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD CONTINUE TO DEVELOP SWD
INTO NM THIS AFTERNOON. THOUGH INSTABILITY WILL BE RELATIVELY
WEAK... STEEPENING LOW-MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND STRONG DEEP LAYER
VERTICAL SHEAR SHOULD SUPPORT A FEW ORGANIZED CELLS AND/OR LINE
SEGMENTS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL AND STRONG
OUTFLOW WINDS.

...CENTRAL/NE MS AND CENTRAL AL THIS AFTERNOON...
THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE TO BE FOCUSED ALONG A DIFFUSE WARM FRONT
WHICH IS BEING REINFORCED BY ONGOING CLOUDS/RAINFALL N OF THE
BOUNDARY. RICH TROPICAL MOISTURE IS FEEDING INTO THIS WEAK
BAROCLINIC ZONE FROM THE S/SW...AND THE COMBINATION OF THIS MOISTURE
AND A DEEP LAYER OF CONDITIONALLY UNSTABLE LAPSE RATES SUPPORTS
MLCAPE VALUES NEAR 2000 J/KG. LOW-LEVEL AND DEEP LAYER VERTICAL
SHEAR ARE SLIGHTLY ENHANCED ALONG THE WEAK FRONT...WHERE PERSISTENT
MULTICELLS AND MARGINAL SUPERCELLS WILL BE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE
AFTERNOON. ISOLATED/MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL AND STRONG WIND GUSTS
WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH THE STRONGER STORMS.

URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 742
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
200 PM CDT MON SEP 21 2009

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

EXTREME NORTHWEST ARKANSAS
SOUTHEAST KANSAS
SOUTHWEST AND CENTRAL MISSOURI
CENTRAL AND EASTERN OKLAHOMA
EXTREME NORTHWEST TEXAS

EFFECTIVE THIS MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 200 PM UNTIL
1000 PM CDT.

HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 75

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2023
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0126 PM CDT MON SEP 21 2009

AREAS AFFECTED...CENTRAL AND ERN OK/SWRN MO/NWRN AR/N TX

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 211826Z - 212030Z

INCREASING SEVERE POTENTIAL ACROSS THIS REGION OVER THE NEXT COUPLE
OF HOURS COULD REQUIRE WW ISSUANCE.

LATEST SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS A SEWD-MOVING COLD FRONT STRETCHING
ROUGHLY FROM FAR SERN NEB SSWWD TO JUST E OF ICT /WICHITA KS/...AND
THEN SWWD ACROSS NWRN OK INTO THE SERN TX PANHANDLE. ANALYSIS ALSO
DEPICTS A PRE-FRONTAL WIND SHIFT...PARALLEL TO AND ROUGHLY 50 MI
AHEAD OF THE MAIN FRONT.

THE PRE-FRONTAL BOUNDARY LAYER HAS MOISTENED OVER THE PAST SEVERAL
HOURS...WHERE DEWPOINTS ARE NOW INTO THE UPPER 60S TO LOW 70S. THIS
COMBINED WITH DAYTIME HEATING HAS YIELDED SURFACE-BASED CAPE IN
EXCESS OF 2000 J/KG ALONG WITH A SLOWLY WEAKENING CAPPING INVERSION.
A LINE OF SLIGHTLY ELEVATED STORMS CONTINUES MOVING ACROSS FAR SERN
KS AND INTO ADJACENT WRN MO...WHICH COULD BECOME SURFACE-BASED WITH
TIME AS THE PRE-CONVECTIVE BOUNDARY LAYER CONTINUES DESTABILIZING.
MEANWHILE...STORM DEVELOPMENT HAS BEGUN TO INCREASE ACROSS N CENTRAL
AND NERN OK AND ADJACENT PARTS OF KS...WHICH SHOULD EXPAND SWWD
ALONG THE PRE-FRONTAL WIND SHIFT AND/OR SURFACE FRONT OVER THE NEXT
FEW HOURS.

DEEP-LAYER SHEAR -- WHILE NOT PARTICULARLY STRONG -- APPEARS
SUFFICIENT FOR ORGANIZED/WEAKLY-ROTATING STORMS. INITIAL CONVECTIVE
DEVELOPMENT MAY EXHIBIT SOME SUPERCELL CHARACTERISTICS...BUT
EVENTUAL EVOLUTION INTO LINEAR ORGANIZATION SHOULD OCCUR. GENERALLY
VEERED LOW-LEVEL FLOW SUGGESTS LIMITED TORNADO POTENTIAL...WITH
GREATER SEVERE POTENTIAL LIKELY TO BE HAIL INITIALLY...AND THEN MORE
LIKELY TO INCLUDE LOCALLY-DAMAGING WINDS AS LINEAR STORM MODE
EVOLVES.

DAY2SVR: Nws Storm Prediction Center Norman Ok

ACUS02 KWNS 211731
SWODY2
SPC AC 211728

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1228 PM CDT MON SEP 21 2009

VALID 221200Z - 231200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
A LARGE CLOSED LOW...NOW IN THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING ACROSS THE
CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS...IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN CUT-OFF FROM THE
STRONGER WESTERLIES...WHICH APPEAR LIKELY TO REMAIN NORTH OF THE
CANADIAN/U.S. BORDER AREA THROUGH THIS FORECAST PERIOD. MODELS ARE
SUGGESTIVE THAT A SLIGHT EASTWARD/NORTHEASTWARD SHIFT TO THE
CIRCULATION CENTER IS POSSIBLE DURING THE DAY TUESDAY...IN RESPONSE
TO A SIGNIFICANT IMPULSE PIVOTING AROUND ITS PERIPHERY. BUT...A
SLIGHT RETROGRESSION TOWARD THE CENTRAL ROCKIES IS POSSIBLE TUESDAY
NIGHT INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY...AS UPPER RIDGING BEGINS TO BUILD
NORTHEASTWARD THROUGH THE NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION/
ROCKIES...DOWNSTREAM OF A POLAR IMPULSE APPROACHING THE BRITISH
COLUMBIA/PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST. AT THE SAME TIME...GUIDANCE
INDICATES THAT SUBTROPICAL RIDGING WILL REMAIN STRONG ACROSS THE
GULF OF MEXICO AND SOUTHEASTERN STATES INTO THE WESTERN ATLANTIC.

...SOUTHERN PLAINS/WESTERN GULF COAST INTO LOWER MS VALLEY...
AN INCREASINGLY SHALLOW LEADING EDGE OF LOW-LEVEL COOLING ASSOCIATED
WITH THE EVOLVING CLOSED LOW IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO ADVANCE
SOUTHEASTWARD TOWARD THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY/WESTERN GULF COAST
REGION...WELL AHEAD OF THE STRONGER COOLING ALOFT...AND THE STRONGER
BELT OF CYCLONIC MID-LEVEL FLOW. WHILE THE PRE-FRONTAL LOW-LEVEL
ENVIRONMENT WILL LIKELY BE VERY MOIST...WITH SURFACE DEW POINTS IN
THE LOWER 70S...AND SUPPORTIVE OF MODERATE LEVELS OF CAPE...IT
APPEARS THAT LOWER/MID TROPOSPHERIC LAPSE RATES OF ANY SIGNIFICANCE
WILL BE GENERALLY CONFINED TO THE LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY/DEEP SOUTH
TEXAS. CLOUD COVER/PRECIPITATION ASSOCIATED WITH WEAKENING
CONVECTION COULD BE FAIRLY EXTENSIVE FROM SOUTHEAST TEXAS INTO THE
OZARKS EARLY IN THE PERIOD...LIMITING PRE-FRONTAL SURFACE HEATING.
AND...WEAKENING PRE-FRONTAL LOW-LEVEL CONVERGENCE MAY BECOME THE
MOST PROMINENT FORCING FOR WARM SECTOR CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT...IN
THE PRESENCE OF WEAK LOW-LEVEL FLOW FIELDS/SHEAR.

THESE UNCERTAINTIES ALL CONTINUE TO INDICATE UNCERTAIN/LOW SEVERE
POTENTIAL FOR TUESDAY/TUESDAY NIGHT. THERMODYNAMIC PROFILES
PROBABLY WILL BE FAVORABLE FOR AT LEAST ONE OR TWO LATE AFTERNOON
STRONG/SEVERE STORMS NEAR THE LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY...BUT IT IS
STILL UNCLEAR WHETHER OR NOT ANY SUCH ACTIVITY WILL REMAIN CONFINED
TO THE HIGHER TERRAIN WEST OF THE RIVER.
