NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1224 PM CST FRI JAN 25 2008

AREAS AFFECTED...NERN TX...NRN LA...SRN AR...NRN/CENTRAL MS...FAR
SWRN TN...NWRN AL

CONCERNING...WINTER MIXED PRECIPITATION

VALID 251824Z - 260030Z

A MIX OF FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET WILL DEVELOP ENEWD ACROSS THE
REGION DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS. HRLY ACCUMULATION RATES UP TO
0.10 IN ARE POSSIBLE...ESPECIALLY ACROSS NRN LA/FAR SRN AR INTO
WCENTRAL MS.

SFC ANALYSIS INDICATES THAT THE 32 F LINE EXTENDS FROM JUST EAST OF
DFW ESEWD TO NEAR SHV THEN EWD TO JUST NORTH OF JAN. VERY DRY AIR IN
THE LOWEST 100-200 MB /PER 12Z SOUNDINGS/ WILL CONTINUE TO INITIALLY
LIMIT PRECIPITATION RATES ON THE NERN EDGE OF THE INITIAL MID LEVEL
FORCING /NRN MS...SWRN TN AND NWRN AL/ THROUGH MOST OF THE AFTERNOON
HOURS. A SUFFICIENTLY DEEP SUB-FREEZING LAYER EXISTS BENEATH AN
ELEVATED WARM LAYER TO SUPPORT LIGHT SLEET OVER THESE AREAS. FURTHER
SOUTHWEST...MODEST LOW LEVEL SATURATION HAS OCCURRED DUE TO THE
INITIAL PRECIPITATION. THUS...MODERATE PRECIPITATION /AIDED BY
ISENTROPIC ASCENT IN THE RIGHT ENTRANCE REGION OF AN UPPER JET/ WILL
SPREAD EWD FROM NERN TX ACROSS SRN AR/NRN LA AND INTO CENTRAL MS
THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. ELEVATED INSTABILITY /PER RECENT LIGHTNING
STRIKES OVER SERN TX/SWRN LA/ SUGGESTS MODERATE PRECIPITATION RATES
/UP TO 0.10 IN/HR/ WILL BE POSSIBLE...ESPECIALLY OVER NRN LA/FAR SRN
AR INTO WCENTRAL MS. THIS MAY LEAD TO SIGNIFICANT ICING IN THIS
REGION BY 00Z. GIVEN THE PROGRESSIVE NATURE OF THE UPPER LEVEL JET
FORCING THIS WINTER EVENT...FREEZING RAIN SHOULD END OVER NERN TX BY
00Z.

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1054 AM CST FRI JAN 25 2008

VALID 261200Z - 271200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...

AMPLIFICATION TO LARGE-SCALE PATTERN IS FORECAST DURING THE DAY TWO
PERIOD. SHORT WAVE TROUGH INITIALLY FROM THE UPPER GREAT LAKES INTO
CNTRL PLAINS WILL INTENSIFY WHILE PROGRESSING EWD TOWARD THE
ATLANTIC COAST. MEANWHILE...UPSTREAM LOW OFF THE CA COAST WILL
BEGIN TO OPEN AND TRANSLATE EWD IN RESPONSE TO DIGGING SYSTEM OVER
BRITISH COLUMBIA.

..CNTRL GULF COAST...

A WEAK SURFACE LOW OVER THE N-CNTRL GULF OF MEXICO IS FORECAST TO
GRADUALLY DISSIPATE WHILE SHIFTING SEWD WITH ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT
EVENTUALLY PUSHING THROUGH THE FL PENINSULA. WSWLY LLJ LIKELY
ASSOCIATED WITH AMPLIFYING MIDLEVEL TROUGH E OF THE MS VALLEY IS
EXPECTED TO MAINTAIN A BELT OF MODEST WARM/MOIST ADVECTION TO THE N
OF WEAKENING SURFACE WAVE. MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL REMAIN QUITE
WEAK...HOWEVER THE WARMING/MOISTENING AROUND 850 MB APPEARS
SUFFICIENT TO SUPPORT WEAK ELEVATED INSTABILITY WITH THE POTENTIAL
FOR A FEW TSTMS EARLY IN THE PERIOD FROM SERN LA EWD ALONG THE MS/AL
COASTS.

..CA COAST...

DYNAMIC COOLING/HEIGHT FALLS ASSOCIATED WITH OPENING UPPER LOW ARE
EXPECTED TO SPREAD INLAND SATURDAY NIGHT...SUPPORTING STEEPENING
LAPSE RATES AND SOME WEAK CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY...MAINLY OVER THE
COASTAL WATERS. AS SUCH...THE POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR A FEW TSTMS
EMBEDDED WITH LARGER PRECIPITATION SHIELD EVOLVING WITHIN SYNOPTIC
SYSTEM WARM CONVEYOR BELT.

..SYNOPSIS...
FLOW EXPECTED TO DEAMPLIFY ACROSS THE LWR 48 AS W CST TROUGH
REDEVELOPS SW INTO THE E PACIFIC AND A SERIES OF FLAT WAVES TOP
ELONGATED RIDGE OVER THE SRN GULF OF MEXICO. POLAR OR MODIFIED
POLAR AIR WILL PREVAIL OVER MOST AREAS AT THE SFC.

..SE TX/LA...
PERSISTENT LOW LEVEL WARM/MOIST ADVECTION WILL SPREAD GRADUALLY E
FROM SE TX TO THE CNTRL GULF CST REGION THROUGH EARLY SATURDAY AS
HIGH LVL SPEED MAX MOVES FROM TX TO THE SERN STATES. FCST SOUNDINGS
CONTINUE TO SHOW WEAK ELEVATED CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY BASED AT
ROUGHLY 700 MB. GIVEN CONTINUED WAA AT THAT LEVEL AND RELATIVELY
COOL PROFILES PRESENT UP TO ABOUT 400 MB...SUFFICIENT
DESTABILIZATION/CHARGE SEPARATION MAY OCCUR TO SUPPORT SCTD AREAS OF
EMBEDDED TSTMS. THE STORMS SHOULD EXPAND E INTO LA THROUGH THE DAY

..CSTL CA...
SATELLITE SHOWS VERY COLD UPPER LOW CONTINUING TO REFORM SSW OFF THE

FREEZING RAIN AND DRIZZLE WILL LIKELY PERSIST THROUGH THE MORNING
ACROSS PARTS OF THE ARKLATEX. GLAZE RATES OF UP TO 0.05 INCH PER
HOUR APPEAR POSSIBLE NOW THAT ATMOSPHERE HAS SATURATED IN LOW
LEVELS. TOTAL ICING SHOULD REMAIN UNDER 0.25 INCH THROUGH NOON CST.

ISENTROPIC UPGLIDE AND WEAK LARGE SCALE ASCENT APPEAR TO BE
COINCIDING WITH AN AREA OF GREATER LOW LEVEL MOISTURE INFLOW ACROSS
THE ARKLATEX THIS MORNING. THE RESULTING LIGHT PRECIPITATION WILL
CONTINUE TO FALL THROUGH A 5C WARM NOSE AROUND 800MB AND INTO A
