0642 PM CST FRI JAN 02 2009

VALID 030100Z - 031200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...S CNTRL THROUGH SE TX...

WV IMAGERY SHOWS A VORTICITY MAXIMA OVER NRN MEXICO...AND THIS
FEATURE WILL CONTINUE EAST INTO SRN AND CNTRL TX LATER TONIGHT.
RICHER LOW LEVEL MOISTURE HAS SPREAD INLAND WITH DEWPOINTS IN THE
LOW-MID 60S ALONG THE TX COASTAL PLAIN. INCREASING SSWLY BOUNDARY
LAYER FLOW DOWNSTREAM FROM THE SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL MAINTAIN AN
INFLUX OF PARTIALLY MODIFIED GULF AIR IN THIS REGION. THIS MOISTURE
HAS RETURNED NWD BENEATH A PLUME OF STEEPER 7-7.5 MID-LEVEL LAPSE
RATES. THESE PROCESSES HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO DESTABILIZATION WITH
OBSERVED SOUNDINGS INDICATING MUCAPE AROUND 1000 J/KG. THE 00Z AND
FORECAST SOUNDING DATA SHOW THE BOUNDARY LAYER REMAINS CAPPED
BENEATH AN INVERSION PRESENT BETWEEN 850 AND 700 MB.

OBSERVED RAOB DATA SHOW WARMER 850 MB TEMPERATURES UPSTREAM OF THE
TX COASTAL PLAIN AND THIS WARMER AIR MAY ADVECT EWD...MAINTAINING A
CAP TO SURFACE BASED STORMS OVERNIGHT. HOWEVER...INCREASING FORCING
FOR ASCENT ATTENDING THE SHORTWAVE TROUGH SHOULD EVENTUALLY PROMOTE
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT LATER TONIGHT INITIALLY FROM S OR S CNTRL
TX...EXPANDING NE THROUGH THE END OF THE PERIOD. TIME OF DAY WILL
MAINTAIN A STABLE BOUNDARY LAYER BENEATH THE INVERSION SUGGESTING
STORMS THAT DEVELOP MAY REMAIN ELEVATED. EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR WILL
INCREASE TO 40+ KT WITH THE APPROACHING MID LEVEL JET AND BECOME
SUFFICIENT FOR ORGANIZED MULTICELLS AND UPDRAFT ROTATION. THE
STEEPENING MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND POTENTIAL FOR UPDRAFT ROTATION
WILL PROMOTE A THREAT FOR HAIL. THE STRONGER STORMS MAY ALSO PRODUCE
GUSTY WINDS. OVERALL SEVERE THREAT DOES NOT APPEAR TO WARRANT MORE
THAN 5% SEVERE PROBABILITIES AT THIS TIME. A BETTER CHANCE FOR
SEVERE STORMS WILL DEVELOP SATURDAY FROM SE TX INTO THE LOWER MS
VALLEY.

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0643 AM CST FRI JAN 02 2009

VALID 021300Z - 031200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...S CENTRAL/SE TX AREA OVERNIGHT...
A MID LEVEL TROUGH OVER WA/ORE THIS MORNING WILL PROGRESS ESEWD OVER
THE GREAT BASIN THROUGH EARLY SATURDAY. HEIGHT FALLS AND INCREASING
FLOW ALOFT ASSOCIATED WITH THE PAC NW TROUGH WILL EXTEND FAR ENOUGH
S ACROSS THE ROCKIES TO RESULT IN THE EWD EJECTION OF A SEPARATE SRN
STREAM TROUGH FROM NW MEXICO TO TX BY TONIGHT. MEANWHILE...LOW-LEVEL
MOISTURE RETURN IS ALREADY UNDERWAY FROM THE WRN GULF OF MEXICO TO
THE TX/LA COASTS...WHERE BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS HAVE RISEN INTO
THE LOW-MID 60S. EXPECT LOW-LEVEL SLY/SSWLY FLOW TO GRADUALLY
INCREASE LATER TODAY AND TONIGHT AND DRAW THIS MOISTURE NWD/NEWD
ACROSS E TX AND THE LOWER MS VALLEY...IN RESPONSE TO LEE
CYCLOGENESIS ACROSS THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS.

REGIONAL SOUNDINGS REVEAL MOIST LAYER DEPTH FROM THE SURFACE TO
ROUGHLY 800-700 MB ACROSS SRN LA/MS THIS MORNING...WITH MUCAPE OF
1000-2000 J/KG AND LITTLE CONVECTIVE INHIBITION. ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE TODAY IN THIS ENVIRONMENT FROM SRN LA
EWD TO SW AL. FARTHER W...THE MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER IN TX IS
RELATIVELY SHALLOW BENEATH A PRONOUNCED CAP. PROFILES WILL BECOME
MORE FAVORABLE FOR THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT TONIGHT FROM S CENTRAL
INTO SE TX AS LOW-MID LEVEL ASCENT AND MOISTURE INCREASE DOWNSTREAM
FROM THE APPROACHING SRN STREAM TROUGH. THOUGH THE MAGNITUDES OF
INSTABILITY AND LOW-LEVEL SHEAR ARE NOT EXPECTED TO BE PARTICULARLY
STRONG TONIGHT IN TX...THE MORE INTENSE STORMS MAY PRODUCE
ISOLATED/MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL AND STRONG WIND GUSTS GIVEN THE
STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND SUFFICIENT DEEP LAYER VERTICAL
SHEAR.

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

...DISCUSSION...

LATEST MEDIUM-RANGE IS RELATIVELY CONSISTENT IN THE EVOLUTION OF THE
LARGE-SCALE PATTERN /NAMELY IN THE MID AND UPPER-TROPOSPHERE/
THROUGH THE EXTENDED PERIOD. THE PRIMARY FEATURE OF INTEREST
CONTINUES TO BE LOW-LATITUDE TROUGH WHICH WILL TRANSLATE EWD FROM
BAJA/GULF OF CA AND NWRN MEXICO AT THE BEGINNING OF D4 /MON JAN 5TH/
TO TX BY THE BEGINNING OF D5 /TUE JAN 6TH/. THIS FEATURE THEN
DE-AMPLIFIES AS IT RAPIDLY LIFTS NEWD INTO THE OH VALLEY DURING THE
DAY TUE IN RESPONSE TO THE EVOLUTION OF AN UPSTREAM...FULL-LATITUDE
TROUGH OVER THE CNTRL PART OF THE NATION. THIS TROUGH THEN
PROGRESSES EWD THROUGH THE MS VALLEY AND EVENTUALLY OFF THE E COAST
BY D8 /FRI JAN 9TH/.

AT THE SURFACE...CONSISTENT DIFFERENCES ARE MAINTAINED ON D5 AS THE
ECMWF /WHEN COMPARED TO THE GFS/ DEVELOPS A LARGER WARM SECTOR OVER
THE GULF COAST STATES INTO TN VALLEY IN ADVANCE OF THE LEAD SHORT
WAVE TROUGH. MOREOVER...THE ECMWF DEVELOPS A BETTER-DEFINED SURFACE
LOW NEWD FROM LA AT 06/12Z INTO THE UPPER OH VALLEY BY 07/00Z. THIS
MODEL HAS SHOWN MUCH MORE RUN-TO-RUN CONSISTENCY THAN THE GFS...THUS
IT/S SOLUTION WAS GENERALLY FOLLOWED. WHILE THERE IS SOME CONCERN
REGARDING THE DEGREE OF INSTABILITY WITHIN THE SYSTEM WARM
SECTOR...SURFACE DEWPOINTS AOA 60 F AND STRONG VERTICAL SHEAR WILL
BE QUITE FAVORABLE FOR AN ORGANIZED SEVERE STORM EPISODE OVER PARTS
OF THE LOWER MS AND TN VALLEYS INTO THE CNTRL GULF STATES TUE INTO
TUE NIGHT.

SOME SEVERE WEATHER MAY CONTINUE INTO D6 /WED JAN 7TH/ OVER THE SERN
STATES IN ADVANCE OF LARGE-SCALE TROUGH. HOWEVER...GIVEN
UNCERTAINTIES IN CONVECTIVE EVOLUTION ON D5...NO ADDITIONAL AREAS
WILL BE DELINEATED ATTM.

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS AND FORECAST...

A DYNAMIC LARGE-SCALE PATTERN WILL EXIST DURING THE DAY THREE PERIOD
AS STRONG...MID/UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH BECOMES NEGATIVELY TILTED OVER
THE GREAT LAKES AND OH VALLEY. ELSEWHERE...A LOW-LATITUDE TROUGH
WILL TRANSLATE SEWD THROUGH THE LOWER CO VALLEY AND BAJA/GULF OF CA
INTO NWRN MEXICO. IN THE LOW LEVELS...PRIMARY SURFACE LOW WILL
DEVELOP NEWD FROM IND/IL INTO ERN ONTARIO/WRN QUEBEC WHILE TRAILING
COLD FRONT SURGES EWD THROUGH THE MS VALLEY TOWARD THE ATLANTIC
COAST. THIS FRONT WILL ALSO PUSH SWD INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO.

CLUSTERS OF TSTMS ARE EXPECTED TO BE ONGOING SUNDAY MORNING OVER
PARTS OF THE CNTRL/ERN GULF COAST. THIS ACTIVITY WILL LIKELY
CONTINUE THROUGH THE DAY AS AIR MASS DESTABILIZES IN ADVANCE OF
SURFACE COLD FRONT. LIMITED INSTABILITY...VERTICAL SHEAR AND
FORCING FOR ASCENT ALL ARE EXPECTED TO PRECLUDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF
ORGANIZED STORMS AND NO SEVERE WEATHER IS FORECAST.

DAY2SVR: Nws Storm Prediction Center Norman Ok

SWODY2
SPC AC 020622

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1222 AM CST FRI JAN 02 2009

VALID 031200Z - 041200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM ERN TX INTO THE LOWER MS
VALLEY...

...SYNOPSIS...

LARGE-SCALE PATTERN WILL REMAIN PROGRESSIVE THROUGH THE DAY TWO
PERIOD AS DYNAMIC MIDLEVEL TROUGH TRANSLATES FROM THE NRN ROCKIES
AND GREAT BASIN EWD INTO THE NRN AND CNTRL PLAINS. A LEAD...LOWER
LATITUDE IMPULSE INITIALLY OVER THE SRN PLAINS WILL DEAMPLIFY
THROUGH THE PERIOD WHILE SHIFTING NEWD THROUGH THE MIDDLE/LOWER MS
VALLEYS.

IN THE LOW LEVELS...DIFFERENCES DO EXIST IN THE TRACK OF PRIMARY
SURFACE LOW...BUT IN GENERAL...THIS FEATURE WILL DEVELOP FROM WRN KS
SEWD TOWARD CNTRL OK BEFORE RAPIDLY LIFTING NEWD INTO IL/IND BY
SUNDAY MORNING. TRAILING COLD FRONT WILL PUSH SEWD THROUGH THE
CNTRL AND SRN PLAINS...EVENTUALLY REACHING THE MIDDLE/LOWER MS
VALLEY LATE SATURDAY NIGHT. MEANWHILE...SYNOPTIC WARM FRONT WILL
LIFT NEWD THROUGH THE TN INTO OH VALLEY.

...ERN TX INTO LOWER MS VALLEY...

02/00Z REGIONAL SOUNDINGS AND CURRENT SURFACE OBSERVATIONS INDICATE
THAT A MODIFIED AIR MASS IS ALREADY RETURNING NWD THROUGH SRN/ERN TX
AND LA. THIS PROCESS WILL BE HASTENED DURING THE LATTER HALF OF THE
DAY ONE PERIOD INTO DAY TWO AS A SWLY LLJ DEVELOPS OVER SRN PLAINS
INTO LOWER MS VALLEY. DESPITE INTERVENING CLOUDS AND
PRECIPITATION...BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS IN THE LOW/MID 60S IN
CONJUNCTION WITH MODEST EML PLUME PRECEDING LEAD SHORT WAVE TROUGH
WILL CONTRIBUTE TO AIR MASS DESTABILIZATION WITH MLCAPE INCREASING
TO 500-1000 J/KG.

TSTMS ARE EXPECTED TO BE ONGOING SATURDAY MORNING OVER PARTS OF ERN
TX...DRIVEN BY DEEP-LAYER ASCENT IN ADVANCE OF SHORT WAVE TROUGH AND
IN LEFT EXIT REGION OF SUBTROPICAL JET STREAK PROPAGATING EWD INTO
THE NWRN GULF BASIN. EXPECT TSTMS TO SLOWLY INTENSIFY THROUGH THE
DAY WHILE MOVING/DEVELOPING EWD/NEWD INTO GRADUALLY DESTABILIZING
AIR MASS OVER LA/MS. WHILE MIDLEVEL WIND FIELDS WILL NOT BE
PARTICULARLY STRONG /45-55 KT/...PROXIMITY OF 40-45 KT LLJ WILL
RESULT IN SUFFICIENT LOW AND DEEP-LAYER SHEAR FOR EMBEDDED SUPERCELL
AND BOWING STRUCTURES CAPABLE OF DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND PERHAPS A
COUPLE OF TORNADOES.

AN ISOLATED SEVERE STORM THREAT MAY CONTINUE INTO SATURDAY NIGHT
OVER PARTS OF W-CNTRL/SWRN AL. HOWEVER...WEAKENING FORCING FOR
ASCENT AND DECREASING INSTABILITY WITH TIME SHOULD TEND TO LIMIT A
MORE SUBSTANTIAL SEVERE WEATHER THREAT OVERNIGHT.

CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

VALID 020546Z - 021045Z

SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR IN NRN OREGON CASCADES WILL
SPREAD SOUTHWARD THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE OREGON CASCADE RANGE
THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS AS SNOW ELEVATIONS DROP WITH PASSAGE OF
COLD FRONT.

STRONG UPPER SYSTEM FROM ERN PACIFIC IS JUST APPROACHING WESTERN
WASHINGTON/OREGON. INITIALLY...EXCEPT AT THE HIGHER
ELEVATIONS...ABOVE 6000 FT...THE PRECIPITATION WILL BE MAINLY RAIN.
BY 09 UTC...THE FORECAST TEMPERATURES INDICATE RATHER DRAMATIC
COOLING WITH SNOW LEVELS DROPPING THE REMAINDER OF THE NIGHT. AS
THE SNOW LEVELS DROP...THERE WILL POSSIBLY BE SEVERAL HOURS OF 2
INCH PER HOUR SNOWFALL RATES...TAPERING OFF TO 1 INCH PER HOUR IN
THE LOWER ELEVATIONS AS MOST OF THE SIGNIFICANT SNOW ENDS ACROSS THE
AREA BY 12 UTC.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1137 PM CST THU JAN 01 2009

VALID 021200Z - 031200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SRN AND SE TX THROUGH SW LA...

A FULL LATITUDE UPPER TROUGH MOVING INTO THE WRN STATES WILL PROVIDE
IMPETUS FOR SHORTWAVE TROUGH PRESENTLY OVER THE BAJA AREA TO EJECT
EAST THROUGH NRN MEXICO FRIDAY...REACHING CNTRL AND SRN TX LATER
FRIDAY NIGHT. SWLY BOUNDARY LAYER FLOW WILL INCREASE AND CONTRIBUTE
TO NWD ADVECTION OF RICHER MOISTURE RESIDING OVER THE WRN GULF. MID
60S BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS WILL BE LIKELY OVER MUCH OF S THROUGH S
CNTRL AND SE TX BY FRIDAY NIGHT. INCREASING SWLY FLOW ALOFT
ATTENDING THE UPPER TROUGH WILL RESULT IN STEEPER 7-7.5 C/KM MID
LEVEL LAPSE RATES SPREADING OVER THE MOIST AXIS...CONTRIBUTING TO
DESTABILIZATION OVERNIGHT. TIME OF DAY WILL LIMIT INSTABILITY IN THE
BOUNDARY LAYER...BUT MUCAPE FROM 800 TO 1200 J/KG WILL BE POSSIBLE.
DESTABILIZATION AND LIFT ATTENDING THE SRN STREAM UPPER TROUGH WILL
LIKELY CONTRIBUTE TO STORMS DEVELOPING LATER FRIDAY NIGHT OVER S TX
AND EXPANDING NE THROUGH THE END OF THE PERIOD.

PRIMARY LOW LEVEL JET WILL PROBABLY DEVELOP NORTH OF INSTABILITY
AXIS AND SE OF DEVELOPING LEE CYCLONE WITHIN ZONE OF HEIGHT FALLS
EAST OF NRN STREAM UPPER TROUGH. HOWEVER...A SECONDARY BRANCH OF THE
LOW LEVEL JET MAY FORM IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE SRN STREAM IMPULSE
WITH ATTENDANT INCREASE IN HODOGRAPH SIZE AND SFC-1 KM HELICITY FROM
200-250 M2/S2 FORECAST. BULK SHEAR WILL ALSO INCREASE IN ASSOCIATION
WITH MID LEVEL JET ACCOMPANYING THE UPPER TROUGH. CURRENT THINKING
IS THAT MOST STORMS WILL REMAIN SLIGHTLY ELEVATED DUE TO A STABLE
BOUNDARY LAYER...AND THIS COULD LIMIT EFFECTIVE HODOGRAPH SIZE.
NEVERTHELESS...BULK SHEAR INCREASING TO 40+ KT COULD SUPPORT A FEW
ORGANIZED STORMS WITH ISOLATED STRONG WIND GUSTS AND HAIL THE
PRIMARY THREATS LATER FRIDAY NIGHT. OVERALL THREAT DOES NOT APPEAR
TO WARRANT MORE THAN 5% PROBABILITIES AT THIS TIME.
