...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

REMOVED THUNDER PROBABILITIES IN PARTS OF THE NORTHEAST WHERE THE
THERMODYNAMIC PROFILE IS HOSTILE TO LIGHTNING PRODUCTION. ALSO ADDED
A SMALL THUNDER AREA TO ERN ND/NWRN MN WHERE SPORADIC LIGHTNING
STRIKES MAY PERSIST DOWNSTREAM OF A VIGOROUS SHORT WAVE TROUGH.
OTHERWISE...MINIMAL CHANGES WERE MADE ELSEWHERE.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1057 AM CDT WED OCT 03 2012/

...SYNOPSIS...
THE NEARLY STATIONARY TROUGH OVER THE MS VALLEY THE LAST FEW DAYS
WILL FINALLY LIFT NE TOWARD THE OHIO VALLEY/LOWER GREAT LAKES
THROUGH 12Z THU. ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP
ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE EASTERN SEABOARD/SRN NEW ENGLAND IN MOIST SLY
FLOW AHEAD OF ADVANCING TROUGH. THE PROGRESSION OF THE SOUTHERN
TROUGH IS DUE TO SEWD ADVANCING NRN STREAM TROUGH EVIDENT LATE THIS
MORNING IN WV IMAGERY ACROSS CNTRL MT. THIS SYSTEM WILL TRACK EWD
AND STRENGTHEN SLIGHTLY OVER THE NRN/CNTRL PLAINS. ASSOCIATED SFC
LOW NEAR SW SD/NW NEB THIS MORNING WILL TRACK NEWD INTO MN
OVERNIGHT...WHILE ATTENDANT COLD FRONT PUSHES E/SE ACROSS THE CNTRL
PLAINS. SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP IN WEAK
ELEVATED INSTABILITY AND INCREASING DEEP LAYER SHEAR AHEAD OF THE
FRONT THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT FROM EXTREME ERN CO INTO WRN IA.

...SRN LA...SRN/CNTRL MS...
ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED THROUGH THE AFTERNOON IN
MOIST...WEAKLY UNSTABLE AIRMASS. DEWPOINTS WILL INCREASE TO THE
LOW/MID 60S F ON SLY LOW LEVEL FLOW. COOL TEMPERATURES ALOFT
/APPROX. -15 C AT 500 MB/ WILL RESULT IN MODEST LAPSE RATES WITH
SBCAPE APPROACHING 1000-1500 J/KG. THE LACK OF DEEP LAYER FORCING
AND GENERALLY WEAK DEEP LAYER SHEAR WILL LIMIT ORGANIZATION/COVERAGE
OF STORMS. HOWEVER THE STRONGER CELLS THIS AFTERNOON MAY PRODUCE
SMALL HAIL.

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1158 AM CDT WED OCT 03 2012

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH OVER THE MID/LOWER-MS VALLEY WILL BE KICKED
NEWD ACROSS THE NORTHEAST/NEW ENGLAND BY EARLY FRI AS A SHORT WAVE
TROUGH OVER THE NRN HIGH PLAINS MOVES EWD ACROSS THE UPPER MIDWEST
TO THE UPPER GREAT LAKES. A SURFACE CYCLONE ATTENDANT TO THE LATTER
TROUGH WILL PROGRESS ACROSS MN INTO NWRN ONTARIO. A SHARP COLD FRONT
WILL PUSH EWD ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES...WITH TRAILING PORTION
STALLING OVER THE SRN PLAINS.

...SRN PLAINS...OZARK PLATEAU...
BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE RETURN WILL BE LIMITED AHEAD OF THE COLD
FRONT IN THE CNTRL CONUS...BUT COMPARATIVELY GREATER ALONG THE
TRAILING PORTION OF THE FRONTAL ZONE ACROSS N-CNTRL TX INTO ERN OK.
HERE...DIURNAL DESTABILIZATION AND CONVERGENCE ALONG THE FRONT MAY
BE SUFFICIENT FOR A SURFACE-BASED STORM OR TWO...BUT PERSISTENT
WLYS/WARM TEMPERATURES AT 700 MB SHOULD MITIGATE SUSTAINED UPDRAFTS.

WEAK MID-LEVEL HEIGHT FALLS OVERSPREADING THE REGION THU NIGHT IN
CONJUNCTION WITH LOW-LEVEL ISENTROPIC LIFT SHOULD YIELD
ELEVATED/POST-FRONTAL CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT NEWD TOWARDS THE OZARK
PLATEAU. CLOUD-BEARING SPEED SHEAR AND STEEP MID/UPPER-LEVEL LAPSE
RATES WILL SUPPORT A RISK FOR SEVERE HAIL. BUT IT APPEARS THAT WHERE
MUCIN IS MINIMIZED...MUCAPE MAY REMAIN WEAK WITH A PROGRESSIVELY
STRONGER CAPPING INVERSION WITH SWRN EXTENT.

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
A PROGRESSIVE UPPER-LEVEL PATTERN WILL PREVAIL ACROSS THE NATION
TODAY. OVER THE N-CNTRL CONUS...A STRONG TROUGH AND ASSOCIATED 50-80
KT MIDLEVEL JET STREAK WILL MOVE FROM THE NRN ROCKIES THIS MORNING
TO THE UPPER MS VALLEY BY THE END OF THE FORECAST PERIOD. STRONG
ASCENT AND WEAK ELEVATED INSTABILITY WILL AID IN ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT FROM ERN MT INTO CNTRL ND THROUGH EARLY
AFTERNOON. MEANWHILE...SURFACE LOW PRESSURE WILL MOVE ACROSS SRN SD
THIS AFTERNOON...AND THEN LIFT NWD ACROSS MN DURING THE NIGHT. AS
THIS OCCURS...A COLD FRONT WILL QUICKLY MOVE SEWD ACROSS THE CNTRL
PLAINS. ASCENT TIED TO THE FRONT AND WEAK ELEVATED BUOYANCY WILL AID
IN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT FROM NERN CO INTO CNTRL IA.
ELSEWHERE...AN UPPER TROUGH...WHICH HAS BEEN STATIONARY OVER THE
LOWER MS VALLEY DURING THE PAST FEW DAYS...WILL EJECT NEWD INTO THE
OH VALLEY AS THE NRN STREAM TROUGH PROGRESSES EWD. ALONG THE
ATLANTIC COAST...MOIST SLY LOW-LEVEL FLOW WILL AID IN A WEAKLY
UNSTABLE AIRMASS...WHICH WILL SUPPORT SCATTERED SHOWER AND ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT.

...SERN LA...SRN/CNTRL MS...
COLD MIDLEVEL TEMPERATURES /FROM -12 TO -15 C AT 500 MB/ WILL RESIDE
ACROSS SERN LA AND SRN/CNTRL MS DURING PEAK HEATING...AND WILL AID
IN A MODERATELY STEEP LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT OVER THE AREA. WITH
DEWPOINTS IN THE MID 50S TO LOW 60S...MLCAPE VALUES FROM 500-1000
J/KG WILL BE POSSIBLE. THIS INSTABILITY COMBINED WITH 0-6 KM BULK
WIND DIFFERENCE FROM 20-30 KT MAY SUPPORT A MARGINAL THREAT FOR
SMALL HAIL AND GUSTY WINDS WITH ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING
DURING THE LATE MORNING AND AFTERNOON.

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...20 PERCENT

SUMMARY...A FEW STORMS WITH LARGE HAIL WILL THREATEN COASTAL SWRN LA
THIS MORNING...BUT A WATCH IS NOT EXPECTED.

DISCUSSION...ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS HAVE FORMED JUST OFF THE SWRN LA
COAST...WITH A FEW STORMS ACROSS NERN LA AS WELL. THESE STORMS ARE
FORMING IN A WEAK TROUGH JUST ABOVE THE SURFACE...AND UNDER THE
UPPER VORT CENTER WITH COOL TEMPERATURES ALOFT AND A RELATIVELY
SHELTERED/MOIST RH PROFILE. THE STRONGEST CELLS WERE NEAR THE
COAST...WHERE HEATING FROM THE OCEAN IS LIKELY CONTRIBUTING.

SHEAR IS WEAK FOR ANY ORGANIZED SEVERE THREAT...BUT STEEP LAPSE
RATES ALOFT ALONG WITH A THE WEAKLY VEERING WINDS WITH HEIGHT WILL
CONTINUE TO FAVOR SLOW MOVING...MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL THIS MORNING.

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SRN PLAINS TO GREAT LAKES...

STRONG HEIGHT FALLS...ON THE ORDER OF 150-180M IN 12HR...WILL SPREAD
ACROSS THE NRN PLAINS/UPPER MS VALLEY INTO THE UPPER GREAT LAKES
THURSDAY AS MID LEVEL SPEED MAX EJECTS TOWARD LOWER MI. BOTH THE
NAM/GFS ARE IN FAIRLY CLOSE AGREEMENT REGARDING THE LARGE SCALE
PATTERN AND THE SUBSEQUENT MOVEMENT OF SFC FRONT TO A POSITION FROM
WRN LOWER MI...SWWD INTO NCNTRL TX BY 05/00Z. WHILE DEEP CONVECTION
CAPABLE OF PRODUCING LIGHTNING MAY ACCOMPANY THE NEAR FRONTAL ZONE
ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES/MID MS VALLEY REGION...MORE SIGNIFICANT
MOISTURE/INSTABILITY WILL BE CONFINED TO THE SRN FRINGE OF THE WIND
SHIFT ACROSS NCNTRL TX INTO ERN OK. STRONG HEATING WILL BE REQUIRED
TO REMOVE A STRONG CAP ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS AND FORECAST SOUNDINGS
SUGGEST AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES IN THE MID-UPPER 80S WILL BE
INADEQUATE FOR SFC-BASED FREE CONVECTION. AS A RESULT TSTMS WILL
LIKELY BE CONFINED TO THE COOL SIDE OF THE BOUNDARY AND IT/S NOT
ENTIRELY CLEAR WHETHER POST-FRONTAL BUOYANCY WILL SUPPORT STRONG
ENOUGH UPDRAFTS FOR SEVERE HAIL. WILL NOT INTRODUCE SEVERE PROBS AT
THIS TIME BUT THERE IS SOME CONCERN THAT ROBUST TSTMS COULD EVOLVE
ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS LATE IN THE PERIOD.

...NERN U.S...

WEAK WARM ADVECTION AHEAD OF EJECTING SHORT-WAVE TROUGH MAY INDUCE
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE NERN U.S. THURSDAY.
ALTHOUGH DEEP LAYER SHEAR IS FORECAST TO BE RATHER
SUBSTANTIAL...POOR LAPSE RATES AND SOMEWHAT WEAK LOW LEVEL FLOW
SUGGEST SEVERE PROBS ARE NOT WARRANTED ACROSS THIS REGION.

...FL...

ISOLATED-SCT TSTMS WILL ONCE AGAIN DEVELOP WITHIN VERY MOIST PLUME
THAT HAS YET TO BE SHUNTED AWAY FROM THE FL PENINSULA...THOUGH
ACTIVITY MAY BECOME MORE FOCUSED ACROSS NRN/CNTRL REGIONS. ALTHOUGH
CONVECTION MAY DEVELOP THROUGHOUT THE PERIOD...STRONGER UPDRAFTS
SHOULD BE FOCUSED DURING THE DAY WHEN PARTIAL SUNSHINE SHOULD AID
STEEPER LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1153 PM CDT TUE OCT 02 2012

VALID 031200Z - 041200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
A LARGE-SCALE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH FROM THE MID-MS VALLEY TO THE WRN
GULF COAST WILL EJECT NEWD AND UNDERGO DE-AMPLIFICATION AS IT MOVES
INTO THE WRN EXTENT OF A STRONG RIDGE EXTENDING FROM THE WRN
ATLANTIC TO NEW ENGLAND. MEANWHILE...A COMPACT...VIGOROUS SHORTWAVE
TROUGH WILL DIG FROM THE NRN ROCKIES TO THE NRN PLAINS. A SHARP COLD
FRONT ATTENDANT TO THE LATTER TROUGH WILL SWEEP S/SEWD ACROSS THE
NRN/CNTRL PLAINS. A SURFACE LOW DEVELOPING OVER SWRN/SRN SD BY 12Z
TODAY WILL TRACK ENEWD INTO THE UPPER MS VALLEY...WITH THE
AFOREMENTIONED COLD FRONT EXPECTED TO EXTEND FROM ERN MN SSWWD
THROUGH ERN IA...NWRN MO TO NRN-SWRN OK TO WEST CENTRAL TX. IN THE
EAST...A COLD FRONT WILL DECAY E OF THE APPALACHIANS.

...MID-ATLANTIC REGION TO THE NORTHEAST...
AN ELONGATED WARM CONVEYOR/MOIST PLUME IS EXPECTED TO PERSIST FROM
THE ERN GULF BASIN ACROSS THE CAROLINAS INTO SRN NEW ENGLAND. VERY
WEAK LAPSE RATES WITHIN THIS CORRIDOR WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MEAGER
INSTABILITY THAT MAY PROVE ADEQUATE FOR DEEP CONVECTION ALONG THE
DECAYING FRONT. SOME UPDRAFTS MAY BE ROBUST ENOUGH TO PRODUCE
ISOLATED LIGHTNING. IN THE ABSENCE OF MEANINGFUL FORCING...GIVEN
RIDGING ALOFT...IT APPEARS ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS WILL BE INADEQUATE
TO WARRANT SEVERE PROBABILITIES THIS PERIOD.

...ERN MT INTO ND AND PART OF NWRN SD...
STRONG UPWARD VERTICAL MOTION IMMEDIATELY DOWNSTREAM OF THE DIGGING
SHORTWAVE TROUGH AND INCREASING LOW LEVEL WAA ATTENDANT TO AN E/SELY
LLJ N OF THE SD LOW SHOULD PROVE SUFFICIENT TO SUPPORT ELEVATED
TSTMS ACROSS ERN MT TO ND. WHILE WEAK INSTABILITY WILL SUPPORT
CONVECTION/EMBEDDED TSTMS /SOME ONGOING AT 12Z TODAY/...SEVERE
WEATHER IS NOT EXPECTED GIVEN THE PRESENCE OF WEAK BULK SHEAR
LIMITING THE POTENTIAL FOR STORM ORGANIZATION.

...CENTRAL PLAINS TO MID MO VALLEY...
DESPITE STEEP LOW/MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES SPREADING ACROSS THESE AREAS
AND DIABATIC HEATING...POOR MOISTURE RETURN AHEAD OF THE APPROACHING
COLD FRONT WILL LIKELY INHIBIT SURFACE-BASED TSTM DEVELOPMENT THIS
AFTERNOON. A GREATER THREAT EXISTS FOR POST-FRONTAL/ELEVATED TSTMS
FORMING WEDNESDAY NIGHT...GIVEN POTENTIAL SATURATION NEAR 700 MB
AND AN INCREASE IN WAA IN THE 850-700 MB LAYER. ELEVATED INSTABILITY
TO AROUND 500 J/KG COMBINED WITH STEEP MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES AND
MODERATE CLOUD-BEARING SHEAR COULD YIELD SMALL HAIL WITH THE
STRONGER ACTIVITY.

...LOWER MS VALLEY AND MID SOUTH REGION...
ISOLATED TSTMS MAY DEVELOP WITHIN THE BASE OF EJECTING UPPER TROUGH
OVER PORTIONS OF THE LOWER MS VALLEY AND MID SOUTH. DAYTIME HEATING
WILL PROVE INSTRUMENTAL IN CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT BENEATH A POCKET
OF COLD MIDLEVEL TEMPERATURES...BUT WEAK LARGE SCALE FORCING SHOULD
TEND TO LIMIT THE OVERALL COVERAGE.
