WATCHES: Severe Thunderstorm Watch Number 555

WWUS20 KWNS 062007
SEL5
SPC WW 062007
COZ000-NEZ000-WYZ000-070200-

URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 555
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
205 PM MDT MON JUL 6 2009

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

PARTS OF NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHEASTER COLORADO
WESTERN PORTIONS OF THE NEBRASKA PANHANDLE
PARTS OF EAST CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST WYOMING

EFFECTIVE THIS MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 205 PM UNTIL 800
PM MDT.

HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 80
STATUTE MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 45 MILES EAST
NORTHEAST OF DOUGLAS WYOMING TO 45 MILES WEST SOUTHWEST OF LIMON
COLORADO. FOR A COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE
ASSOCIATED WATCH OUTLINE UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU5).

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

OTHER WATCH INFORMATION...CONTINUE...WW 553...WW 554...

DISCUSSION...CONVECTION CONTINUES TO INCREASE ACROSS THE CENTRAL
ROCKIES AHEAD OF A VIGOROUS MID-LEVEL SHORT-WAVE TROUGH CROSSING THE
NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION ATTM. NWWD ADVECTION OF UPPER 50S TO
LOW 60S SURFACE DEWPOINTS INTO THE HIGH PLAINS COMBINED WITH DAYTIME
HEATING HAVE RESULTED IN MODERATE DESTABILIZATION...WHICH WILL
SUPPORT AN INTENSIFICATION OF STORMS MOVING SEWD OFF THE HIGHER
TERRAIN.
STORM INTENSIFICATION WILL ALSO BE AIDED BY INCREASING MID-LEVEL
FLOW WITH TIME...CONTRIBUTING TO SHEAR SUFFICIENT FOR MULTICELL
ORGANIZATION -- AND EVENTUALLY PERHAPS SOME MID-LEVEL UPDRAFT
ROTATION. ALONG WITH THE THREAT FOR LARGE HAIL...LOCALLY
STRONG/GUSTY WINDS WILL BE POSSIBLE.

AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
TO 2 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 60
KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 450. MEAN STORM
MOTION VECTOR 30025.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 062003
SWODY1
SPC AC 062000

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0300 PM CDT MON JUL 06 2009

VALID 062000Z - 071200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER A PORTION OF THE NRN
ROCKIES AND NRN HIGH PLAINS...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER A PORTION OF THE CNTRL AND
SRN ROCKIES AND SRN HIGH PLAINS...

...NRN ROCKIES AND ADJACENT HIGH PLAINS FROM MT/NRN WY TO WRN
...ND...

CURRENT FORECAST STILL APPEARS ON TRACK IN THIS REGION. STORMS ARE
DEVELOPING AHEAD OF COLD FRONT OVER HIGHER TERRAIN OF WRN MT...AND
STORM COVERAGE SHOULD INCREASE THIS AFTERNOON WITHIN ZONE OF LARGE
SCALE ASCENT DOWNSTREAM FROM EJECTING VORT MAX. BULK SHEAR OF 35-45
KT WILL SUPPORT SUPERCELLS WITH INITIAL DEVELOPMENT. LARGE HAIL AND
DAMAGING WIND WILL BE THE PRIMARY THREATS. STORMS SHOULD EVENTUALLY
CONSOLIDATE INTO AN MCS BY LATER THIS EVENING WITH AN INCREASING
THREAT OF DAMAGING WIND.

...CNTRL ROCKIES AND HIGH PLAINS...

A RESERVOIR OF 1000-1500 J/KG MLCAPE HAS DEVELOPED OVER THE CNTRL
AND SRN HIGH PLAINS WHERE STEEP LAPSE RATES HAVE OVERSPREAD WRN
PERIPHERY OF UPPER 50S BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS AND WHERE STRONG
DIABATIC HEATING IS OCCURRING. STORMS DEVELOPING OVER THE HIGHER
TERRAIN WILL SPREAD SEWD INTO THE UNSTABLE BOUNDARY LAYER OVER THE
HIGH PLAINS. SELY LOW LEVEL WINDS VEERING TO 20-25 KT AT ABOVE 700
MB IS RESULTING IN SUFFICIENT BULK SHEAR FOR STORMS TO DEVELOP
UPDRAFT ROTATION. ISOLATED LARGE HAIL AND DOWNBURSTS WILL BE THE
MAIN THREATS THROUGH MID EVENING.

...ERN SD AREA...

REF SWOMCD 1458.

...NERN STATES...

COOL AIR ALOFT AND ASCENT RESULTING FROM VORTICITY MAXIMA ROTATING
THROUGH UPPER TROUGH WILL PROMOTE SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS OVER A
PORTION OF THE NERN STATES. ISOLATED MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL AND
GUSTY WINDS COULD ACCOMPANY THE STRONGER CORES. HOWEVER...THE
MARGINAL THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT WITH MODEST LOW LEVEL MOISTURE
WILL PROBABLY REMAIN A LIMITING FACTOR FOR A MORE ROBUST SEVERE
THREAT.

...SERN STATES...

WIDESPREAD CLOUDS AND AREAS OF PRECIPITATION ASSOCIATED WITH ONGOING
STORMS AS WELL AS WEAK MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES...INSTABILITY AND
VERTICAL SHEAR WILL REMAIN LIMITING FACTORS FOR SEVERE WEATHER IN
THIS REGION. HOWEVER...POCKETS OF HEATING ARE OCCURRING AHEAD OF MCV
MOVING EAST THROUGH SERN AL/SWRN GA. SUFFICIENT BOUNDARY LAYER
DESTABILIZATION MAY TRANSPIRE IN LOCALIZED AREAS TO SUPPORT VERY
ISOLATED WET MICRO-BURSTS. HOWEVER...MORE THAN 5% SEVERE
PROBABILITIES DO NOT APPEAR WARRANTED DUE TO THE PREVIOUSLY
MENTIONED LIMITING FACTORS.

..DIAL.. 07/06/2009

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1134 AM CDT MON JUL 06 2009/

...NRN ROCKIES AND ADJACENT HIGH PLAINS FROM MT/NRN WY TO WRN ND...
POTENT SHORT WAVE TROUGH AND ASSOCIATED STRONG PACIFIC FRONT WILL
CONTINUE EAST ACROSS THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE BY EARLY THIS AFTERNOON.
HEATING DOWNSTREAM FROM THE INCREASINGLY STRONG DYNAMIC FORCING FOR
ASCENT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO ADEQUATE AIRMASS BUOYANCY FOR ROBUST TSTM
DEVELOPMENT. CONVERGENCE ASSOCIATED WITH THE RAPIDLY ADVANCING FRONT
WILL ACT TO FOCUS DEEP CONVECTION AND THIS ACTIVITY WILL THEN
DEVELOP EWD INTO AN AIRMASS CHARACTERIZED BY WELL-MIXED MLCAPE AOA
1000 J/KG. ALL GUIDANCE REVIEWED FOR THIS OUTLOOK STRONGLY SUGGEST A
SEVERE QUASI-LINEAR MCS SWEEPING EAST ACROSS MUCH OF MT THROUGH LATE
AFTERNOON AND INTO THE EVENING. MAJOR CONCERN WILL BE THE POTENTIAL
FOR DAMAGING WINDS ACCOMPANYING THE PASSAGE OF THE SQUALL LINE.
GIVEN THE PRE-STORM STEEP LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT AND 50-60KT MID
LEVEL JET DIRECTED INTO THE BACK OF THE MCS...EXPECT WIND DAMAGE
POTENTIAL WITH THIS SYSTEM TO BE WIDESPREAD AND POSSIBLY SIGNIFICANT
WITH A COUPLE OF LOCAL TSTM WIND EVENTS PERHAPS APPROACHING 70KT.

IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE...BUT LESS LIKELY...THAT A FEW DISCRETE CELLS
COULD ATTAIN SUPERCELL CHARACTERISTICS EITHER EARLY IN THE
DEVELOPMENT CYCLE...OR EMBEDDED IN OR AHEAD OF THE SQUALL LINE. A
LOW PROBABILITY TORNADO THREAT COULD EVOLVE FROM STORMS EXHIBITING
THIS BEHAVIOR. LARGE HAIL WILL ALSO BE A THREAT.

...CENTRAL ROCKIES AND ADJACENT HIGH PLAINS...
AIRMASS BACKED INTO THE HIGHER TERRAIN CONTINUES TO CONTAIN
RELATIVELY HIGH MOISTURE/PW VALUES TODAY /AROUND 150 PCT OF NORMAL/.
STORMS WILL ONCE AGAIN FIRE AS DIFFERENTIAL HEATING CONTRIBUTES TO
ELIMINATING ANY INHIBITION. WHILE LOW LEVEL ELY/SELY UPSLOPE FLOW
HAS WEAKENED CONSIDERABLY COMPARED TO PRIOR DAYS...25-30KT NWLY MID
LEVEL FLOW SHOULD PROVIDE MARGINALLY SUPPORTIVE SHEAR FOR A FEW
BETTER ORGANIZED/PERSISTENT STORMS EVENTUALLY GENERATING HAIL AND
LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS. FORECAST STORM MOTION TO THE SOUTH SUGGESTS
THIS ACTIVITY MAY NOT MOVE THAT FAR OFF THE FRONT RANGE.
HOWEVER...ANOTHER AXIS OF DESTABILIZATION AND WEAK LARGE SCALE
ASCENT OVER THE HIGH PLAINS FROM NEB PNHDL SWD TO TX PNHDL MAY
CONTRIBUTE TO STORM DEVELOPMENT IN THESE AREAS. SLIGHTLY GREATER LOW
LEVEL SLY FLOW AND MOISTURE RETURN INTO THESE AREAS MAY ALLOW STORMS
OR STORM CLUSTERS TO PROPAGATE EWD/SEWD THIS EVENING WITH SOME
POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WINDS AND HAIL.

...GULF COAST...
A NUMBER OF STORM OUTFLOWS AND SMALL-SCALE CONVECTIVELY-INDUCED
CIRCULATIONS EXIST AMIDST A VERY MOIST/UNSTABLE AIRMASS ALONG THE
GULF COAST FROM TX TO FL. POCKETS OF INTENSE HEATING WHERE AIRMASS
HAS YET TO BE OVERTURNED BY DEEP CONVECTION WILL PROVIDE A FAVORABLE
ENVIRONMENT FOR ISOLATED TO SCATTERED DAMAGING WET MICROBURSTS. LAND
AREAS REMAINING UNAFFECTED BY ONGOING OR PRIOR STORMS ARE LIMITED
AND THEREFORE OVERALL SEVERE POTENTIAL APPEARS TO BE DIMINISHING
COMPARED TO PRIOR DAYS.

...NORTHEAST...
PRONOUNCED SHORT WAVE TROUGH /50-60KT JET STREAK/ EMBEDDED WITHIN
STRONG AND PERSISTENT BELT OF NW FLOW ACROSS SRN CANADA/NRN GREAT
LAKES WILL SWEEP SEWD ACROSS NRN ENGLAND THROUGH TONIGHT AS TRAILING
CLOSED UPPER LOW REMAINS ESSENTIALLY STATIONARY NEAR SRN
ONTARIO/QUEBEC BORDER AREA. HEATING IS WELL UNDERWAY ACROSS NEW
ENGLAND ATTM AND EXPECTED STEEPENING LAPSE RATES AND INCREASING
LARGE SCALE ASCENT WITH TROUGH AND APPROACHING COLD FRONT TO RESULT
IN SCATTERED TSTM DEVELOPMENT. AREAS OF EFFECTIVE SHEAR IN THE
20-35KT RANGE WILL PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR A FEW BETTER
ORGANIZED/PERSISTENT UPDRAFTS WITH SOME POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WINDS
AND SMALL HAIL. UNCERTAINTIES ABOUT STORM COVERAGE AND DURATION
GIVEN LIMITED LOW LEVEL MOISTURE PRECLUDE HIGHER SEVERE
PROBABILITIES THIS AREA AT THIS TIME.

THE 20Z CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK UPDATE.

RECENT RADAR MOSAIC SHOWS STRONG/SEVERE STORMS STRADDLING THE SD/MN

CONVERGENCE APPEARS TO BE PARTIALLY AIDING TSTM DEVELOPMENT...WITH A
STORM OVER LINCOLN COUNTY MN EXHIBITING WEAK LOW LEVEL ROTATION IN

URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 554
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
135 PM MDT MON JUL 6 2009

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

EASTERN IDAHO
PARTS OF SOUTHWEST AND CENTRAL MONTANA
NORTHWEST WYOMING

EFFECTIVE THIS MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 135 PM UNTIL 900
PM MDT.

HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 80
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 185
STATUTE MILES NORTH AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM 25 MILES SOUTH OF
DRUMMOND MONTANA TO 55 MILES EAST OF HARLOWTON MONTANA. FOR A
COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE ASSOCIATED WATCH OUTLINE
UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU4).

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

OTHER WATCH INFORMATION...CONTINUE...WW 553...

DISCUSSION...A POTENT AND WELL-DEFINED SHORT WAVE TROUGH AND
ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT WILL MOVE ACROSS THE ROCKIES AND ENCOUNTER AN
INCREASINGLY UNSTABLE AIRMASS ALONG AND EAST OF THE CONTINENTAL
DIVIDE THIS AFTERNOON. AS THE SYNOPTIC FORCING ACTS TO STEEPEN MID
LAPSE RATES...BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTENING/WARMING WILL CONTRIBUTE TO
MLCAPE IN THE 800-1200 J/KG RANGE...MORE THAN ADEQUATE TO SUPPORT
ROBUST STORM UPDRAFTS IN THE PRESENCE OF INCREASINGLY STRONG SHEAR
AND LARGER SCALE DYNAMICS.
INITIALLY QUASI-DISCRETE CELLS/SUPERCELLS WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY
FOCUSED AND TAKE ON LINEAR CHARACTERISTICS AS COLD FRONT BECOMES
BETTER DEFINED EAST OF THE HIGHER TERRAIN LATER TODAY. A FEW OF
THESE STORMS COULD PRODUCE LARGE HAIL AND POSSIBLY EVEN A BRIEF/WEAK
TORNADO BEFORE ACTIVITY MERGES AND EVOLVES INTO A SEVERE SQUALL LINE
WITH WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WINDS BECOMING MORE OF A THREAT WITH TIME.

AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
TO 2 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 70
KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 450. MEAN STORM
MOTION VECTOR 26035.

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH LIKELY

VALID 061905Z - 062000Z

EXPECT TSTM DEVELOPMENT TO INCREASE QUITE RAPIDLY OVER THE NEXT 1-2
HOURS ACROSS PARTS OF WRN MT AND NWRN WY. THIS WILL OCCUR AS A
POTENT AND WELL-DEFINED SHORT WAVE TROUGH AND ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT
MOVE ACROSS THE ROCKIES AND ENCOUNTER AN INCREASINGLY UNSTABLE
AIRMASS ALONG AND EAST OF THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE. LATEST SURFACE AND
SATELLITE ANALYSIS PLACES COLD FRONT ON THE ID/MT BORDER. WEAK LEE
TROUGHING EXISTS AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT AND A QUASI-STATIONARY WARM
FRONT EXTENDS EWD ACROSS CNTRL AND SERN MT. THESE FEATURES...IN
ADDITION TO FAVORABLE OROGRAPHIC/UPSLOPE FLOW...WILL ACT AS FOCUSING
MECHANISMS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF STORMS.

AS THE SYNOPTIC FORCING ACTS TO STEEPEN MID LAPSE RATES...BOUNDARY
LAYER MOISTENING/WARMING WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MLCAPE IN THE 800-1200
J/KG RANGE...MORE THAN ADEQUATE TO SUPPORT ROBUST STORM UPDRAFTS IN
THE PRESENCE OF INCREASINGLY IMPRESSIVE LARGER SCALE DYNAMICS.

ALL INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE INITIALLY QUASI-DISCRETE
CELLS/SUPERCELLS WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY FOCUSED AND TAKE ON LINEAR
CHARACTERISTICS AS COLD FRONT BECOMES BETTER DEFINED EAST OF THE
HIGHER TERRAIN LATER TODAY. A FEW OF THESE STORMS COULD PRODUCE
LARGE HAIL AND POSSIBLY EVEN A BRIEF/WEAK TORNADO BEFORE ACTIVITY
MERGES AND EVOLVES INTO SEVERE SQUALL LINE WITH WIDESPREAD DAMAGING
WINDS BECOMING MORE OF A THREAT WITH TIME.

CONVECTION SLOWLY INCREASING ACROSS THE E SLOPES OF THE ROCKIES MAY
EVENTUALLY REQUIRE WW ISSUANCE.

CUMULUS DEVELOPMENT CONTINUES EARLY THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS THE HIGHER
TERRAIN FROM SERN WY SWD INTO NRN NM...AHEAD OF A WEAK MID-LEVEL
SHORT-WAVE FEATURE MOVING ACROSS THE FOUR CORNERS AREA WITHIN THE
BROADER SHORT-WAVE RIDGE. THIS FEATURE APPEARS TO BE ASSISTING IN
SOME BACKING OF THE LOW-LEVEL FLOW FIELD OVER THE HIGH PLAINS --
WITH GENERALLY SELY FLOW NOW INDICATED.

STRONG DIURNAL HEATING WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THIS REGION...AND WITH
DEWPOINTS NEAR 60 ADVECTING NWWD ACROSS THE HIGH
PLAINS...MIXED-LAYER CAPE /NOW IN THE 500 TO 1000 J/KG RANGE/ WILL
CONTINUE TO INCREASE. THIS COMBINED WITH THE WEAK UPSLOPE FLOW
SHOULD SUPPORT CONTINUED/SLOW DEVELOPMENT OF SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS...WITH STORMS SHIFTING SLOWLY SEWD WITH TIME OFF THE
HIGHER TERRAIN AND INTO THE HIGH PLAINS.

ONLY MODEST NWLYS ARE INDICATED THROUGH THE MIDDLE TROPOSPHERE
ACROSS THE CENTRAL ROCKIES/HIGH PLAINS. HOWEVER...VEERING FLOW WITH
HEIGHT SHOULD RESULT IN SHEAR SUFFICIENT FOR SOME ORGANIZATION/WEAK
ROTATION...AND ASSOCIATED/LOCAL THREATS FOR HAIL/WIND -- OR EVEN AN
ISOLATED WEAK/BRIEF TORNADO. EVENTUAL COVERAGE OF CONVECTION/SEVERE

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER A PORTION OF THE NRN
PLAINS AND UPPER MS VALLEY...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER A PORTION OF THE NERN
STATES...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER A PORTION OF W CNTRL MT...

...SYNOPSIS...

TUESDAYS LARGE SCALE UPPER PATTERN WILL REMAIN DOMINATED BY AN UPPER
TROUGH OVER THE PACIFIC AND NWRN U.S. COASTS AND A RIDGE AXIS FROM
THE SRN HIGH PLAINS THROUGH THE NRN PLAINS. BY 12Z TUESDAY...PRIMARY
SYNOPTIC FRONT WILL EXTEND FROM A SURFACE LOW IN SERN CANADA INTO
THE NERN STATES THEN WNWWD THROUGH SD AND NERN MT. A LEE TROUGH WILL
STRETCH N-S THROUGH THE CNTRL AND SRN HIGH PLAINS. A QUASISTATIONARY
FRONT WILL REMAIN ACROSS THE GULF COAST STATES.

...CNTRL THROUGH NRN PLAINS AND PORTIONS OF UPPER MS VALLEY...

A FEW STORMS MAY BE ONGOING EARLY TUESDAY FROM PORTIONS OF ND INTO
THE UPPER MS VALLEY REGION WITHIN ZONE OF WARM ADVECTION NORTH OF
NW-SE ORIENTED FRONT. IN-SITU MOISTURE AND EVAPOTRANSPIRATION WILL
RESULT IN MIXED LAYER DEWPOINTS GENERALLY IN THE 50S TO AROUND 60
FARTHER SOUTH IN WARM SECTOR. AXIS OF STEEPER MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES
WILL HAVE OVERSPREAD A PORTION OF THE CNTRL-NRN PLAINS AND IN
CONJUNCTION WITH DIABATIC WARMING WILL CONTRIBUTE TO 1000-2000 J/KG
MLCAPE.

THE BULK OF SHORTWAVE TROUGH CURRENTLY MOVING THROUGH THE PACIFIC NW
WILL LIKELY LIFT NWD INTO SRN ALBERTA/SASKATCHEWAN. HOWEVER...MODELS
SUGGEST SRN END VORT MAX OR REMNANT MCV FROM MONDAYS STORMS MAY
CONTINUE OVER TOP OF UPPER RIDGE THROUGH THE NRN PLAINS AND UPPER MS
VALLEY. THE WEAK LARGE SCALE FORCING ALONG WITH PLUME OF WARM AIR IN
THE 850-700 MB LAYER ASSOCIATED WITH EML COULD BE PROBLEMATIC FOR
THUNDERSTORM INITIATION IN MUCH OF THE WARM SECTOR. HOWEVER...AS
BOUNDARY LAYER WARMS AND MIXES THE POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR STORMS
TO INTENSIFY ALONG CONVECTIVELY ENHANCED BAROCLINIC ZONE. FARTHER
SOUTH MORE ISOLATED DEVELOPMENT MAY OCCUR IN VICINITY OF PRE-FRONTAL
CONVERGENCE BOUNDARY ACROSS CNTRL SD BY LATE AFTERNOON.
STRENGTHENING SSWLY LOW LEVEL JET MAY SUPPORT ADDITIONAL STORMS
DEVELOPING PRIMARY NORTH OF BOUNDARY DURING THE EVENING. BULK SHEAR
OF 25-35 KT WILL SUPPORT BOTH MULTICELL AND SUPERCELL STRUCTURES
WITH STORMS EVOLVING INTO ONE MORE CLUSTERS OVERNIGHT. ISOLATED
LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WIND GUSTS WILL BE THE MAIN THREATS
PRIMARILY FROM LATE AFTERNOON TO MID EVENING.

...NERN STATES...

COLD AIR ALOFT WITH TEMPERATURES OF -15 TO -17C AT 500 MB WILL EXIST
ABOVE AXIS MODEST LOW LEVEL MOISTURE EAST OF FRONTAL BOUNDARY
RESULTING IN 500-1000 J/KG MLCAPE AS THE BOUNDARY LAYER WARMS DURING
THE AFTERNOON. THIS REGION WILL EXIST WITHIN EXIT REGION OF A
MID-UPPER LEVEL JET THAT WILL MOVE SEWD THROUGH BASE OF UPPER
TROUGH. STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE AND INTENSITY
INTO THE AFTERNOON WITH BULK SHEAR OF 40+ KT SUPPORTIVE OF ORGANIZED
STRUCTURES. ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND AND LARGE HAIL WILL BE THE
PRIMARY THREATS.

...WRN AND CNTRL MT...

ANOTHER IN A SERIES OF SHORTWAVE TROUGHS WILL MOVE THROUGH BASE OF
UPPER TROUGH AND INTO MT DURING THE AFTERNOON. STORMS WILL LIKELY
DEVELOP OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN BY LATE AFTERNOON AND SPREAD NEWD
INTO THE HIGH PLAINS OF CNTRL MT DURING THE EVENING. STRONG BULK
SHEAR WILL FAVOR SUPERCELLS WITH INVERTED-V BOUNDARY LAYERS AND
STEEP LAPSE RATES SUPPORTING ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND AND HAIL. THERE
STILL REMAINS SOME QUESTION REGARDING QUALITY OF AIRMASS SINCE
INSTABILITY/MOISTURE WILL LIKELY BE SOMEWHAT LIMITED IN POSTFRONTAL
REGIME...BUT WILL BE COMPENSATED FOR TO SOME EXTENT BY COOL
TEMPERATURES ALOFT.

...SRN AND CNTRL HIGH PLAINS...

A FEW STORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE ALONG LEE TROUGH OVER THE CNTRL AND
SRN HIGH PLAINS WITHIN NWLY FLOW REGIME WHERE BULK SHEAR WILL BE
SUFFICIENT FOR ORGANIZED STORMS WITH LARGE HAIL AND ISOLATED
DAMAGING WIND POSSIBLE. HOWEVER...CAPPING INVERSION AND PROXIMITY TO
UPPER RIDGE SUGGEST IT MAY BE DIFFICULT TO INITIATE MORE THAN VERY
ISOLATED STORMS...WLL THEREFORE MAINTAIN 5% SEVERE PROBABILITIES AT
THIS TIME.
