MESO: Mesoscale Discussion 1878

ACUS11 KWNS 040229
SWOMCD
SPC MCD 040228
ALZ000-MSZ000-040330-

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1878
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0928 PM CDT MON SEP 03 2012

AREAS AFFECTED...ERN MS...WRN AL

CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 612...

VALID 040228Z - 040330Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 612 CONTINUES.

SUMMARY...THE THREAT FOR DAMAGING WINDS AND A BRIEF TORNADO OR TWO
CONTINUES ACROSS THE WATCH AREA FOR THE NEXT HOUR OR TWO.
HOWEVER...WANING INSTABILITY RESULTANT FROM BOUNDARY LAYER COOLING
AND DECOUPLING SHOULD PROMOTE A DOWNWARD TREND IN CONVECTIVE
ACTIVITY AND AN INCREASINGLY MARGINAL SEVERE THREAT. THIS DOWNWARD
TREND IS EXPECTED TO PRECLUDE ANY DOWNSTREAM WW ISSUANCE.

DISCUSSION...ACTIVITY ACROSS THE SRN PART OF THE WATCH AREA HAS
EXITED THE WATCH AREA AND REMAINS SUB-SEVERE. A FEW STRONG WIND
GUSTS ARE POSSIBLE BUT MOST OF THIS ACTIVITY HAS WEAKENED.

ACTIVITY ACROSS CNTRL PORTIONS OF THE WATCH /W-CNTRL AL/ EXHIBITED
SOME SLOW FORWARD-PROPAGATION TO THE SW BUT DID NOT BECOME ORGANIZED
INTO A LINEAR MCS. INSTEAD...NUMEROUS CELL MERGERS PROMOTED BRIEF
UPDRAFT INTENSIFICATION/ROTATION WITH VERY HEAVY RAINFALL AND SOME
STRONG WINDS. EXPECT A SIMILAR TREND TO CONTINUE...ESPECIALLY ACROSS
PICKENS...TUSCALOOSA...AND GREENE COUNTIES WHERE A WEAK CONVECTIVE
LINE IS MOVING SWD AND WILL LIKELY INTERSECT THE ONGOING ACTIVITY
ACROSS THE AREA. BOUNDARY LAYER COOLING SHOULD PROMOTE A GRADUAL
WEAKENING TREND WITH THE PRIMARY THREATS OF DAMAGING WINDS AND VERY
HEAVY RAINFALL. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS RESULTING FLASH FLOOD
POTENTIAL MENTIONED IN SPC MCD 1875 REMAIN LARGELY UNCHANGED WITH A
DISPLACEMENT SWWD INTO THE COUNTIES MENTIONED ABOVE. CONVECTIVE
TRENDS WILL BE MONITORED BUT A DOWNSTREAM WATCH IS NOT CURRENTLY
ANTICIPATED.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 031251
SWODY1
SPC AC 031249

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0749 AM CDT MON SEP 03 2012

VALID 031300Z - 041200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE UPPER
MIDWEST...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PORTIONS OF MS/AL...

...SYNOPSIS...
WATER VAPOR SATELLITE IMAGERY AND OBJECTIVE UPPER AIR DATA REVEAL A
COMPLEX FLOW FIELD ACROSS THE CONTINENT AND NEAR SHORE WATERS THIS
MORNING. FASTER W-SWLY FLOW ACROSS THE NORTHWEST/NRN PLAINS/UPPER MS
VALLEY IS COMPRISED OF A SHORTWAVE TROUGH CROSSING LS AND WI ATTM
AND ANOTHER UPSTREAM IMPULSE SPREADING EAST FROM MT. WEAKER
DISTURBANCES ALSO EXIST AMIDST A PLUME OF MONSOON MOISTURE EXTENDING
ALONG THE NRN FLANK OF THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE FROM THE SW/FOUR
CORNERS ENEWD ACROSS THE CNTRL PLAINS. THE RESIDUAL TROPICAL
CIRCULATION THAT WAS ISAAC REMAINS CUTOFF FROM THE FASTER WLYS TO
THE NORTH AND DEEP LAYER ELY FLOW ACROSS THE GULF AND FL. A COLD
CORE MID/UPPER LEVEL LOW EMBEDDED WITHIN THE ELYS WAS TRACKING WWD
TOWARD SRN FL.

AT THE SFC...A STATIONARY FRONT SEPARATES COOLER/DRIER AIR OVER THE
NORTHEAST FROM WARM AND VERY MOIST AIR FROM DELMARVA SOUTH AND WEST.
FORMER ISAAC LOW ACROSS THE LOWER OH VALLEY IS FORECAST TO MOVE
LITTLE THIS PERIOD. CONVECTION ASSOCIATED WITH THE REMNANTS OF ISAAC
CONTINUES AS A DECAYING MCS OVER AL THIS MORNING. FARTHER NORTH...A
WEAK COLD FRONT EXTENDS FROM A LOW IN CANADA SWWD ACROSS LS/MN
BEFORE TRANSITIONING INTO A WARM FRONT ORIENTED SE-NW ACROSS THE
DAKOTAS. ANOTHER WEAK COLD FRONT WAS TAKING FORM ACROSS ERN MT AND
WAS PRECEDED BY SFC TROUGH OVER ND. MOST OF THESE SFC FEATURES...IN
CONCERT WITH SOME UPPER AIR SUPPORT...WILL PLAY A ROLE IN TSTM
DEVELOPMENT TODAY.

...UPPER MIDWEST...
DEVELOPMENT OF A BROKEN SQLN OVER LS THIS MORNING WAS AIDED BY
DEEP-LAYER ASCENT ACCOMPANYING THE SHORTWAVE TROUGH AND WEAK COLD
FRONT SPREADING EAST ACROSS THE REGION. LOW LEVEL MOISTURE TRANSPORT
INTO AND AHEAD OF THE SLOWLY ADVANCING WEAK FRONTAL ZONE...AND AHEAD
OF TRAILING SHORTWAVE DISTURBANCES OVER MN AND NEB ATTM...WILL
PROMOTE MODEST DESTABILIZATION ACROSS THE REGION THROUGH THE MORNING
AND INTO THIS AFTERNOON. MLCAPE FROM ERN NEB AND IA/SERN MN INTO WI
SHOULD CLIMB TO AROUND 1500 J/KG AMIDST MODEST CAPPING/INHIBITION.
WEAK BUT PERSISTENT HEIGHT FALLS ACROSS THE REGION WILL MAINTAIN
ASCENT BOTH ALONG THE FRONT AND ACROSS WARM SECTOR WITH THE
LIKELIHOOD OF ADDITIONAL STORMS DEVELOPING THROUGH THE DAY. WEAK LOW
LEVEL FLOW TOPPED BY 25-35KT WLY FLOW AT 500MB SHOULD SUPPORT SOME
STORM UPDRAFT PERSISTENCE/ROTATION WITH A FEW STORMS CAPABLE OF
PRODUCING HAIL AND HIGH WINDS. A SMALL MCS OR TWO MAY EVOLVE FROM
STORM MERGERS INTO THE EVENING WITH STORM SCALE ENSEMBLE GUIDANCE
INDICATING A GREATER CHANCE FOR THIS TO OCCUR ACROSS THE MID MO
RIVER VALLEY INTO LATE TONIGHT.

...MS/AL...
SWRN FLANK OF DECAYING MCS COLD POOL ACROSS THE MS/AL BORDER AREAS
WILL LIKELY SERVE TO FOCUS NEW CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT AS AIRMASS IN
THIS AREA BECOMES STRONGLY UNSTABLE /MLCAPE AOA 2000 J/KG/ THROUGH
THE AFTERNOON. LARGER SCALE FORCING FOR ASCENT ACROSS THIS AREA WILL
REMAIN SUBTLE/WEAK WHICH COULD DELAY MORE ROBUST/WIDESPREAD STORM
DEVELOPMENT UNTIL LATER IN THE DAY OR THIS EVENING. HOWEVER...WEAK
INHIBITION AND VEERING WIND PROFILES THROUGH A DEEP LAYER SUGGEST
THAT ROBUST/ORGANIZED STORMS WILL EVENTUALLY DEVELOP AND LIKELY
PERSIST. ANOTHER MCS MAY FORM BY LATE EVENING AND...IN ADDITION TO
LOCALLY HEAVY TO EXTREME RAINFALL...DAMAGING WINDS AND TORNADO
POTENTIAL WILL ALSO ACCOMPANY SOME OF THE STRONGER STORMS.

...CNTRL/NRN PLAINS...
AT LEAST ISOLATED HIGH-BASED STORMS APPEAR POSSIBLE NEAR WARM
FRONT/LEE TROUGH THIS AFTERNOON FROM THE CNTRL HIGH PLAINS TO
ND...AND EVENTUALLY INTO WRN MN LATER TONIGHT AS THE MT SHORTWAVE
TROUGH SPREADS EAST. WHILE THIS DEVELOPMENT WILL OCCUR AMIDST
GENERALLY WEAKER INSTABILITY THAN FARTHER EAST AND SOUTH...STEEP MID
LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND SUFFICIENT SHEAR COULD CONTRIBUTE TO A COUPLE
OF HAIL/WIND EVENTS.

...FL...
COLD CORE UPPER LOW WILL BOOST TSTM POTENTIAL ACROSS SRN FL WITH
SOME CHANCE FOR HAIL AND PERHAPS A WET DOWNBURST OR TWO.

...SOUTHEAST/MID ATLANTIC...
WEAK UPPER DIVERGENCE SPREADING EAST AHEAD OF REMNANT ISAAC TROUGH
WILL AID ASCENT AND SLOW-MOVING TSTM DEVELOPMENT ALONG STALLED
FRONTAL ZONE ACROSS THE MID ATLANTIC. IN ADDITION...WEAK UPSLOPE
FLOW INTO THE PIEDMONT AND APPALACHIAN FOOTHILLS WILL LIKELY
CONTRIBUTE TO SCATTERED/NUMEROUS STORMS FROM GA ACROSS THE CAROLINAS
THIS AFTERNOON. SHEAR WILL NOT BE PARTICULARLY STRONG SO POORLY
ORGANIZED MULTICELL STORMS ARE ANTICIPATED WITH SOME CHANCE FOR
ISOLATED WIND DAMAGE.

VALID 061200Z - 111200Z

...DISCUSSION...
SUBSTANTIAL DIVERGENCE IN MEDIUM-RANGE MODEL SOLUTIONS BEGINS DAY 5
/FRI. 9-1/...AS THE PERSISTENT CANADIAN VORTEX SHIFTS EWD TOWARD ERN
CANADA AND A SHORTER-WAVELENGTH FEATURE DIGS SEWD IN NWLY CYCLONIC
FLOW ON THE WRN FRINGE OF THE LARGER-SCALE LOW.

THE GFS -- LIKE 24 HOURS AGO -- REMAINS SLOWER...WEAKER...AND
FARTHER W WITH THIS FEATURE...RESULTING IN FAIRLY SUBSTANTIAL
DIFFERENCES IN SURFACE PATTERN EVOLUTION AS WELL.

PRIOR TO THE DIVERGENCE IN SOLUTIONS...SEVERE POTENTIAL IS APPARENT
DAY 4 /THU. 9-6/ ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS REGION...AS THE DIGGING
SHORT-WAVE FEATURE HEADS SEWD ACROSS THE NRN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION --
DRIVING SURFACE PRESSURE FALLS OVER THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS.
RESULTING LOW-LEVEL SELYS BENEATH 30 TO 40 KT WLYS ATOP THE WARM
SECTOR WILL YIELD SHEAR SUPPORTIVE OF ORGANIZED STORMS...AND
ASSOCIATED WIND/HAIL THREATS. HOWEVER...THREAT DOES NOT APPEAR
QUITE SUBSTANTIAL ENOUGH ATTM TO CONFIDENTLY INTRODUCE A 30%
EQUIVALENT THREAT AREA.

BEYOND DAY 4...PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED SOLUTION DEVIATIONS PRECLUDE
CONSIDERATION OF THREAT AREAS THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE PERIOD.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE
MIDWEST/OH VALLEY/GREAT LAKES REGION...

...SYNOPSIS...
FAST CYCLONIC FLOW ALOFT WILL PERSIST ACROSS MOST OF THE NRN CONUS
THIS PERIOD...ON SRN FRINGES OF A LARGE CENTRAL CANADA TROUGH.
SEVERAL WEAK VORTICITY MAXIMA ARE EMBEDDED WITHIN THIS FLOW --
INCLUDING ONE PROGGED TO BE MOVING QUICKLY ACROSS THE MIDWEST REGION
IN CONJUNCTION WITH A SURFACE COLD FRONT. THIS SYSTEM WILL SUPPORT
AN AREA OF CONVECTION AND ASSOCIATED SEVERE POTENTIAL --
PARTICULARLY DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING HOURS.

...MIDWEST/GREAT LAKES/OH VALLEY AREA...
SHOWERS AND STORMS -- POSSIBLY ONGOING OVER WRN PORTIONS OF THE
REGION EARLY -- SHOULD CONTINUE/INCREASE INTO THE AFTERNOON...AS
PRE-FRONTAL HEATING OF THE BOUNDARY LAYER RESULTS IN MODERATE
DESTABILIZATION. WITH MODERATELY STRONG WNWLY FLOW ALOFT
PERPENDICULAR TO THE FRONT...POTENTIAL FOR LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS IS
APPARENT -- WITH AT LEAST A BROKEN/SEMI-ORGANIZED LINE APPEARING
FAIRLY LIKELY ATTM BY MID TO LATE AFTERNOON. THUS...WILL INTRODUCE
SLIGHT RISK ACROSS THIS AREA...TO COVER THE WIND THREAT AS WELL AS
HAIL POTENTIAL.

VALID 041200Z - 051200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS/MID
MO VALLEY VICINITY...

...SYNOPSIS...
SOME AMPLIFICATION OF THE CYCLONIC FLOW FIELD ALOFT OVER THE NRN
HALF OF THE U.S. IS EXPECTED THIS PERIOD...AS A SHORT-WAVE TROUGH
ROTATES ACROSS THE S CENTRAL CANADA/N CENTRAL U.S. BORDER REGION ON
THE SRN SIDE OF THE LARGER-SCALE VORTEX OVER THE CANADIAN PRAIRIE.

AT THE SURFACE...A WEAK/DIFFUSE SURFACE PATTERN IS FORECAST DURING
THE FIRST HALF OF THE PERIOD...BUT A MORE PRONOUNCED FRONT IS
PROGGED TO DROP SEWD ACROSS THE HIGH PLAINS DURING THE LATE
AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING -- IN RESPONSE TO THE AFOREMENTIONED/PASSING
UPPER SHORT-WAVE TROUGH. OVERNIGHT...THE FRONT SHOULD PROGRESS
QUICKLY EWD/SEWD...REACHING THE UPPER MS VALLEY AND CENTRAL PLAINS
REGION BY THE END OF THE PERIOD.

...CENTRAL PLAINS/MID MO VALLEY AND SURROUNDING AREAS..
UNTIL A COLD FRONT MOVES INTO THE REGION DURING THE
EVENING/OVERNIGHT...LOW LEVEL AXES OF GREATER CONVECTIVE POTENTIAL
REMAIN DIFFICULT TO DISCERN ATTM. IT APPEARS MOST LIKELY THAT AS A
SHORT-WAVE TROUGH EJECTS EWD FROM THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS ATOP A
WARMING/DESTABILIZING BOUNDARY LAYER...A WEAK NW-SE WARM
FRONTAL-TYPE FEATURE MAY FOCUS CONVECTIVE INITIATION...AS WILL THE
COLD FRONT MOVING SEWD OUT OF THE NRN HIGH PLAINS AREA.

WITH 25 TO 35 KT MID-LEVEL WLYS EXPECTED...SHEAR WILL SUPPORT
UPDRAFT ORGANIZATION/ROTATION...PARTICULARLY NE OF THE WEAK WARM
FRONT WHERE LOW-LEVEL FLOW MAY REMAIN MORE BACKED/SELY. ALONG WITH
POTENTIAL FOR ISOLATED WIND/HAIL...A TORNADO OR TWO MAY ALSO OCCUR
ACROSS THIS AREA.

STORMS MAY CONTINUE INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS AS THE COLD FRONT
CONTINUES TO ADVANCE SEWD AND MODEST LOW-LEVEL JET DEVELOPMENT
OCCURS WITHIN THE WARM SECTOR. SEVERE THREAT...THOUGH...SHOULD
GRADUALLY WANE OVERNIGHT.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

VALID 031200Z - 041200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE GULF COAST
STATES...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE CNTRL
PLAINS AND MID MO VALLEY...

...GULF COAST STATES...
AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH WILL MOVE SLOWLY SEWD ACROSS THE OH AND TN
VALLEY TODAY. AT THE SFC...A PRONOUNCED CORRIDOR OF LOW-LEVEL
MOISTURE SHOULD BE IN PLACE FROM THE CNTRL GULF COAST EXTENDING NWD
ACROSS THE TN VALLEY WHERE SFC DEWPOINTS SHOULD AGAIN BE IN THE
LOWER TO MID 70S F. THE MOIST AIRMASS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO STRONG
DESTABILIZATION BY THIS AFTERNOON WITH THE MODELS FORECASTING MLCAPE
VALUES ACROSS THE CNTRL GULF COAST IN THE 2000 TO 3000 J/KG RANGE.
THIS ALONG WITH LARGE-SCALE ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH THE UPPER-LEVEL
TROUGH SHOULD ENABLE FOR THE INITIATION OF NUMEROUS THUNDERSTORMS
ACROSS THE SLIGHT RISK AREA WITH MCS DEVELOPMENT POSSIBLE THIS
EVENING ACROSS THE REGION.

FORECAST SOUNDINGS AT 00Z/TUE ALONG THE INSTABILITY AXIS FROM ERN MS
EWD ACROSS CNTRL AL SHOW 0-6 KM SHEAR IN THE 30 TO 40 KT RANGE WITH
SOME DIRECTIONAL SHEAR BELOW 700 MB. THE SHEAR ENVIRONMENT ALONG
WITH STEEP LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND A VERY MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER
WITH PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES OF 2.0 TO 2.5 INCHES SHOULD SUPPORT A
THREAT FOR WET DOWNBURSTS. THE THREAT MAY BE LOCALLY ENHANCED WITH
LINE SEGMENTS THAT HAVE ACCESS TO THE STRONGEST INSTABILITY.
SUPERCELL DEVELOPMENT WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE BUT THE WARM AIR ALOFT
IS EXPECTED TO LIMIT THE HAIL THREAT.

...MID MO VALLEY/NRN AND CNTRL PLAINS...
A SUBTLE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH WILL MOVE ACROSS THE NRN AND CNTRL
PLAINS TODAY. AT THE SFC...A COLD FRONT WILL ADVANCE SEWD ACROSS THE
DAKOTAS AND NEB. AHEAD OF THE FRONT...SFC DEWPOINTS SHOULD BE IN THE
LOWER TO MID 60S F FROM MID MO VALLEY EXTENDING NEWD ACROSS THE
UPPER MS VALLEY WHERE THE MODELS DEVELOP MODERATE INSTABILITY THIS
AFTERNOON. THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT WILL BE POSSIBLE ALONG THE
INSTABILITY AXIS FROM SE NEB EXTENDING NEWD ACROSS IA INTO SRN WI
LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND ALSO ALONG THE FRONT FROM SE SD SWD INTO
NCNTRL NEB.

FORECAST SOUNDINGS AT 00Z/TUE AT OMAHA AND DES MOINES NEAR THE
GREATEST INSTABILITY SHOW 0-6 KM SHEAR IN THE 40 TO 50 KT RANGE DUE
TO SUBSTANTIAL DIRECTIONAL SHEAR BELOW 850 MB AND STRONG SPEED SHEAR
IN THE MID-LEVELS. THIS COULD SUPPORT SUPERCELL DEVELOPMENT WITH A
THREAT FOR LARGE HAIL POSSIBLE IN AREAS THAT DESTABILIZE THE MOST. A
WIND DAMAGE THREAT MAY ALSO DEVELOP AS THE CELLS MOVE SEWD ACROSS
THE SLIGHT RISK AREA EARLY THIS EVENING.

FURTHER WEST ACROSS ECNTRL NEB...A STRONG CAP IS FORECAST TO BE IN
PLACE MUCH OF THE AFTERNOON. DUE TO THE CAP...THE MAIN CONVECTIVE
FOCUS SHOULD BE ALONG THE COLD FRONT. IF STORMS CAN INITIATE ALONG
THE FRONT AND MOVE SEWD INTO ECNTRL NEB DURING THE EVENING...THEN
THE SHEAR ENVIRONMENT AND LARGE TEMP-DEWPOINTS SPREADS COULD SUPPORT
AN ISOLATED WIND DAMAGE THREAT.

...SOUTH FLORIDA...
AN UPPER-LEVEL LOW WILL APPROACH SRN FL TODAY FROM THE SOUTHEAST.
AHEAD OF THE UPPER-LEVEL LOW...MODERATE INSTABILITY IS FORECAST
ACROSS SOUTH FL WITH SFC DEWPOINTS IN LOWER 70S F. THE MOIST AND
UNSTABLE AIRMASS ALONG WITH 30 KT OF FLOW IN THE MID-LEVELS COULD BE
ENOUGH FOR A MARGINAL SEVERE THREAT AS STORMS INITIATE THIS
AFTERNOON. STEEP LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES MAY SUPPORT A MARGINAL THREAT
FOR DAMAGING WIND GUSTS. THE STRONGER UPDRAFTS MAY ALSO BE CAPABLE
OF PRODUCING HAIL DUE TO THE COLD TEMPS ALOFT ASSOCIATED WITH THE
UPPER-LEVEL LOW.
