AREAS AFFECTED...EASTERN KS INTO WESTERN/CENTRAL MO

CONCERNING...HEAVY RAINFALL

VALID 021914Z - 022115Z

HEAVY RAINFALL POTENTIAL WILL CONTINUE/POTENTIALLY INCREASE FROM
EAST CENTRAL KS INTO WEST CENTRAL MO THIS AFTERNOON. SOME THREAT FOR
HAIL/DAMAGING WINDS WILL EXIST MAINLY WITH SOUTHERN PERIPHERAL
DEVELOPMENT...BUT SUCH RISKS SHOULD REMAIN FAIRLY ISOLATED/LIMITED
IN NATURE...WITH HEAVY RAINFALL THE DOMINANT HAZARD. A SEVERE WATCH
IS NOT CURRENTLY ANTICIPATED.

SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND TSTMS WILL CONTINUE ALONG/JUST
NORTH OF EFFECTIVE SURFACE FRONT EXTENDING SOUTHWEST-NORTHEAST
ACROSS EAST CENTRAL KS INTO WEST CENTRAL/NORTHERN MO...WITH OTHER
MORE ISOLATED DEVELOPMENT IN THE ADJACENT WEAKLY CAPPED/UNSTABLE
WARM SECTOR. A MODERATELY UNSTABLE BOUNDARY LAYER /UP TO 2000 J PER
KG OF MLCAPE/ WOULD SUPPORT SOME PULSE-TYPE RISK FOR STRONG WIND
GUSTS/HAIL...MAINLY WITH FRONT-SOUTHERN PERIPHERAL DEVELOPMENT
THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. OTHERWISE...WEAK LOW TO MID TROPOSPHERIC
FLOW/SLOW STORM MOTIONS...MODERATELY HIGH MOISTURE CONTENT...AND
MODEST BUT SUSTAINED LIFT /AHEAD OF WESTERN KS UPPER LOW/ SHOULD
FAVOR LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL/ECHO TRAINING THROUGH THE AFTERNOON
ALONG THE I-70/I-35 CORRIDORS OF EASTERN KS...INCLUDING THE KC METRO
AREA...INTO WEST CENTRAL/NORTH CENTRAL MO.

VALID 021731Z - 021900Z

SEVERE THREAT MAY INCREASE INTO MID AFTERNOON ACROSS FAR SOUTHEAST
PA/SOUTHERN NJ AND THE DELMARVA VICINITY. MONITORING DEVELOPMENTAL
TRENDS FOR A POSSIBLE WATCH.

WEAK VORTICITY MAXIMA APPEARS TO BE CROSSING PA EARLY THIS AFTERNOON
PER SATELLITE IMAGERY. AHEAD OF THIS FEATURE AND ALONG A WSW-ENE
SURFACE FRONTAL ZONE...A MODEST UPSWING IN DEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN
NOTED ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL PA EARLY THIS AFTERNOON...ALTHOUGH THIS
CONVECTIVE HAS NOT BEEN DEEP ENOUGH YET TO PRODUCE LIGHTNING AS OF
1715Z. OTHER CUMULIFORM DEVELOPMENT IS NOTED SOUTH-SOUTHWESTWARD
ALONG THE SPINE OF THE APPALACHIANS INTO EASTERN WV/WESTERN VA.
AHEAD OF THIS ACTIVITY...AMPLE INSOLATION HAS ALLOWED TEMPERATURES
TO AGGRESSIVELY WARM THROUGH THE 80S F ACROSS FAR SOUTHEAST
PA/SOUTHERN NJ AND THE DELMARVA VICINITY...RESULTING IN AN
INCREASINGLY UNSTABLE/WEAKLY CAPPED BOUNDARY LAYER. THE STRONGEST
WESTERLIES ALOFT ARE NORTH OF THE SURFACE FRONT...HOWEVER RELATIVELY
STRONG FLOW AROUND/ABOVE 3 KM PER WSR-88D VWP DATA FROM
STERLING/DOVER WOULD SUPPORT WELL-ORGANIZED MULTICELLS/PERHAPS EVEN
A FEW SUPERCELLS THIS AFTERNOON. GIVEN A WARM/WELL-MIXED BOUNDARY
LAYER AND LARGELY UNIDIRECTIONAL LOW TO MID TROPOSPHERIC
FLOW...DAMAGING WINDS AND SEVERE HAIL WILL BE THE PRIMARY HAZARDS.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1224 PM CDT TUE JUN 02 2009

VALID 031200Z - 041200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM SRN PARTS OF THE OH VALLEY
INTO THE MID ATLANTIC REGION...

...SYNOPSIS...

A BROAD UPPER TROUGH /ANCHORED BY VORTEX OVER NRN QUEBEC/ WILL
PERSIST OVER CNTRL/ERN CANADA INTO THE GREAT LAKES AND NEW ENGLAND.
SEVERAL VORTICITY MAXIMA WILL ROTATE THROUGH THIS TROUGH. FARTHER
SOUTH...A VORTICITY MAXIMUM CURRENTLY OVER WRN KS EMBEDDED WITHIN
WEAKER FLOW REGIME WILL SLOWLY DRIFT EWD TOWARD THE LOWER MS VALLEY.
IN THE WEST...A CUTOFF UPPER LOW WILL REMAIN JUST OFF THE CA COAST
WITH SEVERAL IMPULSES ROTATING AROUND THIS FEATURE ACROSS CA/NV INTO
THE PACIFIC NW.

AT THE SURFACE...WEAK LOW PRESSURE INITIALLY OVER THE UPPER OH
VALLEY WILL DEVELOP ENEWD ALONG FRONTAL ZONE THROUGH THE DELMARVA
WHILE TRAILING PORTION OF BOUNDARY SLOWLY SAGS SWD FROM THE OH INTO
TN VALLEY. THIS FRONTAL SEGMENT WILL LINK WITH A SECONDARY LOW
PRESSURE AREA DEVELOPING SEWD INTO THE LOWER MS VALLEY. THE WRN
EXTENSION OF THIS FRONT WILL SHIFT SWD THROUGH TX.

...SRN PORTION OF THE OH VALLEY THROUGH MID ATLANTIC...

A FRONTAL BOUNDARY...PARTIALLY REINFORCED BY AREAS OF ONGOING POST
FRONTAL CONVECTION...SHOULD EXTEND FROM THE MID ATLANTIC WSWWD
THROUGH SRN MO OR NRN AR EARLY WEDNESDAY. AMPLE DIABATIC WARMING OF
THE BOUNDARY LAYER AND MID 60S DEWPOINTS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MODERATE
INSTABILITY...BUT MODEST 6-6.5 C/KM MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES SHOULD
LIMIT MLCAPE TO 1500-2000 J/KG. STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN
COVERAGE AND INTENSITY ALONG FRONT AND OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN AS
THE ATMOSPHERE DESTABILIZES. ACTIVITY DEVELOPING IN VICINITY OF THE
FRONT WILL BE ON SRN FRINGE OF THE STRONGER WINDS ALOFT WITH WLY
25-30 KT DEEP LAYER FLOW...BUT WITH BULK SHEAR GENERALLY AOB 30 KT.
STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN MULTICELLULAR WITH LINE SEGMENTS AND
SMALL CLUSTERS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING ISOLATED STRONG TO DAMAGING WIND
GUSTS AND HAIL THROUGH EARLY EVENING AS ACTIVITY DEVELOPS SEWD.

...ERN TX THROUGH LOWER MS AND TN VALLEYS...

WITH AMPLE LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE IN PLACE...ATMOSPHERE WILL LIKELY ONCE
AGAIN BECOME MODERATELY UNSTABLE /1500-2500 J/KG MLCAPE/ IN ADVANCE
OF SEWD MOVING FRONT. STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO REDEVELOP ALONG AND
SOUTH OF THE FRONT DURING THE AFTERNOON. THE WARM SECTOR WILL HAVE
BEEN SHUNTED SOUTH OF THE STRONGER FLOW ALOFT WITH WEAK VERTICAL
SHEAR SUPPORTIVE OF PULSE AND MULTICELL STORMS. SOME OF THE STORMS
COULD BECOME CAPABLE OF PRODUCING ISOLATED STRONG WIND GUSTS AND
HAIL THROUGH EARLY EVENING.

..CNTRL/SRN HIGH PLAINS...

ISOLATED...DIURNAL STORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE ALONG HIGHER TERRAIN
WITHIN POST-FRONTAL UPSLOPE REGIME. PRESENCE OF STEEP LAPSE RATES
AND 30-35 KT OF DEEP LAYER SHEAR WILL FOSTER AN ENVIRONMENT
MARGINALLY FAVORABLE FOR SUSTAINED/ROTATING UPDRAFTS CAPABLE OF SOME
HAIL.

...PACIFIC NW AND SIERRAS...

PRESENCE OF DEEP MOISTURE AND A SERIES OF VORTICITY MAXIMA LIFTING
NWD ALONG ERN PERIPHERY OF UPPER LOW WILL PROMOTE AREAS OF WIDELY
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS IN THIS REGION. INSTABILITY WILL REMAIN
MARGINAL...BUT LOW-MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES MAY BECOME SUFFICIENT FOR A
THREAT OF ISOLATED GUSTY WINDS AND MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL AS THE
BOUNDARY LAYER DESTABILIZES.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE CENTRAL SRN/CENTRAL
PLAINS NEWD INTO THE MID ATLANTIC STATES...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS NRN CA AND SRN ORE...

...SYNOPSIS...
MAIN THREAT FOR STRONGER/SEVERE STORMS WILL BE ALONG AND AHEAD OF A
COLD FRONT...STRETCHING FROM THE CENTRAL/SRN PLAINS NEWD INTO SRN
NEW ENGLAND. THE UPPER FLOW WILL BE MOSTLY WEAK...15-20 KT... FROM
THE PLAINS STATES EWD INTO THE MID MS VALLEY...THOUGH 30-40 KT WINDS
AT 500 MB...ON THE SRN FRINGE OF THE WLYS...WILL EXTEND FROM THE OH
VALLEY EWD INTO THE ATLANTIC COAST. OTHER FEATURE OF CONVECTIVE
SIGNIFICANCE IS A WEAK MID LEVEL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM LOCATED IN FAR
WRN KS...WHICH IS FORECAST TO TRACK SLOWLY EWD THROUGH SRN KS
THROUGH TONIGHT. A BELT OF 30 KT MID LEVEL WINDS WERE LOCATED ON THE
SRN SIDE OF THIS SYSTEM FROM ERN NM INTO NWRN TX.

...CNTRL/SRN PLNS TO LWR MO VLY...
ELEVATED THUNDERSTORMS WERE LOCATED IN WRN OK THIS MORNING... WITHIN
AREA OF STRONG DIFFLUENCE ALOFT. THESE STORMS ARE LIKELY TO SPREAD
EWD AND DEVELOP NEWD ALONG THE FRONT INTO KS/MO THROUGH THE DAY. THE
STORMS SHOULD BECOME SURFACE BASED WITH A WARMING AND
DESTABILIZING BOUNDARY LAYER. MODERATE INSTABILITY AND 20-30 KT DEEP
LAYER SHEAR WILL SUPPORT SCATTERED SEVERE MULTICELL CLUSTERS WITH
HAIL/DAMAGING WINDS.

THE SLIGHTLY STRONGER MID LEVEL FLOW AND VEERING WINDS IN LOWER 3 KM
MAY PROVIDE SUFFICIENT DEEP LAYER SHEAR FOR SUPERCELLS ACROSS NWRN
TX LATE THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING. DESPITE THE STABLE MORNING BOUNDARY
LAYER FROM OVERNIGHT CONVECTION...STRONG HEATING COMBINED WITH VERY
STEEP LAPSE RATES...PER MAF 12Z SOUNDING...AND DEWPOINTS IN THE MID
60S ARE LIKELY TO RESULT IN AN EXTREMELY UNSTABLE AIR MASS BY LATE
AFTERNOON WITH MLCAPES APPROACHING 4000 J/KG. VEERING WINDS IN THE
LOWEST KM WILL SUPPORT 1 KM SHEAR NEAR 20 KTS AND ANY STORMS THAT
ARE MORE STRONGLY DRIVEN SSEWD BY PROPAGATION...HAVE THE POTENTIAL
TO PRODUCE BRIEF TORNADOES. HOWEVER...THE VERY STEEP LAPSE RATES AND
DEGREE OF INSTABILITY APPEAR MORE FAVORABLE FOR VERY LARGE HAIL.

A THREAT FOR SEVERE HAIL AND GUSTY WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO PERSIST
INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS AS STORMS EVOLVE INTO SEVERAL CLUSTERS AND
MOVE ESEWD/SEWD ACROSS PORTIONS OF OK AND TX.

...MID MS/OH VALLEYS EWD TO THE MID ATLANTIC COAST...
DIFFICULT TO PICK OUT ON WV IMAGERY ANY DISCERNABLE UPPER FEATURES
FOR CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT. HOWEVER...VISIBLE/RADAR IMAGERY HINTS AT
A MID LEVEL SYSTEM MOVING EWD ALONG THE MO/IA BORDER AND MAY BE
ENHANCING WEAK CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT ACROSS WRN MO/NERN KS. THIS
AREA IS ALSO LOCATED WITHIN AREA OF CONVERGENCE INDICATED ON 700 MB
12Z ANALYSIS. EXPECT STORMS TO DEVELOP EAST OF THIS FEATURE ACROSS
NERN MO EWD INTO IL/IND THIS AFTERNOON. CU HAD ALSO RECENTLY
DEVELOPED OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF WV...POSSIBLY IN RESPONSE TO
LIFT ASSOCIATED WITH MCV MOVING RAPIDLY EWD THROUGH CENTRAL PA. THIS
SYSTEM MAY ALSO INITIATE STORMS EAST OF THE APPALACHIANS. ONCE
STORMS DEVELOP ...30-40 KT DEEP WLY SHEAR AND MODERATE INSTABILITY
WILL BE SUFFICIENT FOR POSSIBLE EMBEDDED FORWARD-PROPAGATING
SEGMENTS WITH SEVERE WIND/HAIL.

...PACIFIC NW/NRN GRT BASIN...
WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SUGGESTS AN UPR LEVEL IMPULSE WAS ROTATING NWD
INTO NRN CA AROUND OFFSHORE UPPER LOW. ASSOCIATED UVV AND MODERATELY
UNSTABLE AIR MASS...MLCAPES ALREADY AROUND 1000 J/KG AT 16Z...SHOULD
SUPPORT AFTERNOON/EVENING FROM THE NRN CA SIERRA/SISKIYOU INTO
SRN/CNTRL ORE. DESPITE RELATIVELY WEAK WINDS THROUGH THE LOWER 3
KM...STRONGER WINDS FROM 500-200 MB SHOULD YIELD MULTICELL STORMS
WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR HAIL AND GUSTY WINDS.
