AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS OF THE CNTRL/ERN DAKOTAS

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 282017Z - 282215Z

A WATCH WILL LIKELY EVENTUALLY BE NEEDED...BUT UNCERTAINTY EXISTS
CONCERNING TIMING DUE TO STRONG MID-LEVEL INHIBITION.

STRONG DESTABILIZATION IS ONGOING WITHIN NARROW PRE-FRONTAL THERMAL
RIDGE NORTH OF PIERRE SD INTO THE VICINITY OF WEAK SURFACE LOW TO
THE NORTHEAST OF BISMARCK ND. INCREASING BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE
AND INSOLATION HAVE RAISED MIXED LAYER CAPE TO 2000-3000
J/KG...BENEATH PLUME OF ELEVATED MIXED LAYER AIR EMANATING FROM THE
CENTRAL ROCKIES. THIS IS STILL BENEATH MID/UPPER RIDGE...
DOWNSTREAM OF VIGOROUS SHORT WAVE TROUGH NOW DIGGING TOWARD THE
NORTH CENTRAL ROCKIES. AND...WEAK MID/UPPER FORCING ACROSS THE
DAKOTAS IS PROVIDING THE PRIMARY UNCERTAINTY WITH REGARD TO
CONVECTIVE INITIATION ACROSS THE DAKOTAS THIS AFTERNOON.

STRONG FORCING ON THE NOSE OF A SOUTHERLY LOW-LEVEL JET...WHICH HAS
INCREASED TO 40 KT...IS IN THE PROCESS OF BECOMING FOCUSED ACROSS
NORTHEASTERN NORTH DAKOTA...NEAR/NORTH OF DEVILS LAKE/GRAND FORKS.
AND...THIS SEEMS TO OFFER THE BEST POTENTIAL FOR STORM DEVELOPMENT
THROUGH THE 21-23Z TIME FRAME. THOUGH ACTIVITY WILL LIKELY BE
ROOTED JUST ABOVE THE BOUNDARY LAYER...ENVIRONMENT WITH MODERATE
FLOW AND STRONG VEERING OF WINDS WITH HEIGHT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO
STRONG DEEP LAYER SHEAR SUPPORTIVE OF SUPERCELLS. LARGE HAIL WILL
BE THE PRIMARY SEVERE THREAT...BUT DAMAGING WIND GUSTS ALSO SEEM
POSSIBLE.

IT ALSO APPEARS POSSIBLE THAT LOCALIZED WEAKENING OF CAP COULD OCCUR
BY 22-23Z...IN CLOSER PROXIMITY TO SURFACE LOW...WEST OF JAMESTOWN
ND...WHERE BOUNDARY LAYER BASED CONVECTION IS MORE PROBABLE. IF
THIS OCCURS...LARGE LOW-LEVEL HODOGRAPHS WILL SUPPORT AN ADDITIONAL
RISK FOR TORNADOES.

VALID 282002Z - 282230Z

CLUSTER OF STRONG TSTMS DEVELOPING OVER CENTRAL WY ARE EXPECTED TO
INCREASE IN INTENSITY AS THE MOVE INTO NERN WY OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL
HOURS. ADDITIONAL ISOLATED SVR TSTMS MAY OCCUR OVER THE BLACK HILLS
BEFORE 21Z...WHILE EVENTUALLY MOVING INTO THE LOWER ELEVATIONS OF
WRN SD BY 23Z...WHERE CINH CONTINUES TO WEAKEN. A WW MAY BECOME
NECESSARY OVER THE AREA LATER THIS AFTERNOON.

LATEST SFC ANALYSIS PLACES A SFC LOW OVER CENTRAL WY NEAR RIW. PER
SAT/RADAR IMAGERY A CLUSTER OF TSTMS HAVE DEVELOPED OVER CENTRAL WY
JUST AHEAD OF THIS SFC LOW IN A REGION OF MODERATE HEIGHT FALLS
AHEAD OF AN UPPER TROUGH OVER THE GREAT BASIN. ATTM...THE
ENVIRONMENT INVOF OF THIS CONVECTION WAS DRY WITH DEWPTS IN THE 30S.
HOWEVER...50-100 MILES DOWNSTREAM OF THIS ACTIVITY...AN AXIS OF
HIGHER DEWPTS /READINGS NEAR 50 F/ EXTENDED SW-NE ACROSS NERN WY.
RECENT OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS SHOWS THAT AROUND 1000 J/KG OF MLCAPE AND
LESS THAN 25 J/KG OF MLCINH EXISTS OVER MOST OF NERN WY. ADEQUATE
DEEP LAYER SHEAR/FORCING WILL EXIST AS MODERATE MID LEVEL WINDS
OVERSPREAD NELY WINDS AT THE SFC. WITH THE MODERATE INSTABILITY
EXPECTED TO SLOWLY INCREASE...AT LEAST AN ISOLATED SVR THREAT IS
EXPECTED TO DEVELOP WITH THIS ACTIVITY. FURTHER EAST...MODERATE
UPSLOPE FLOW INTO THE BLACK HILLS BEHIND A COLD FRONT ALONG WITH
WEAKENING CINH /AS THERMAL GRADIENT LAGS THE MAIN WIND SHIFT/ WILL
CONTINUE TO SUPPORT TSTM DEVELOPMENT. SIMILAR TO NERN WY...THE
MAGNITUDE OF THE VERTICAL SHEAR ALONG WITH MODERATE INSTABILITY WILL
SUPPORT AT LEAST AN ISOLATED SVR WIND/HAIL THREAT WITH THESE THE
STRONGEST TSTMS. GREATER INHIBITION OVER WRN SD /AWAY FROM THE
HIGHER TERRAIN/ WILL LIKELY KEEP THE SVR THREAT RELATIVELY CLOSE TO
THE BLACK HILLS THROUGH 23Z.

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE CENTRAL/SRN
HIGH PLAINS...

..SYNOPSIS...
UPPER TROUGH/LOW WILL CONTINUE MOVING SLOWLY EWD ACROSS THE
ROCKIES...WITH WEAK HEIGHT FALLS TO CONTINUE ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE
PLAINS. AT THE SURFACE...ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT SHOULD CONTINUE
MAKING SLOW EWD PROGRESS ACROSS THE PLAINS STATES...WITH ONE LOW
MOVING FROM SD INTO NRN MN AND A SECOND FORECAST TO DEVELOP OVER THE
TX/OK PANHANDLE REGION.

..CENTRAL AND SRN HIGH PLAINS...
STRONG HEATING COMBINED WITH DEWPOINTS IN THE MID 60S WILL RESULT IN
MODERATE DESTABILIZATION ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND SRN PLAINS E OF
DEVELOPING DRYLINE. HOWEVER...CAPPING INVERSION ALONG DRYLINE
SHOULD HINDER CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT -- PARTICULARLY S OF THE TX
PANHANDLE. HOWEVER...FOCUSED AREA OF UVV INVOF SURFACE LOW --
FORECAST OVER THE TX/OK PANHANDLE REGION DURING THE AFTERNOON --
SHOULD HELP WEAKEN CAP SUPPORTING SCATTERED STORM DEVELOPMENT...FROM
SERN CO IN LOW-LEVEL UPSLOPE FLOW N OF LOW INTO WRN KS/THE TX OH
PANHANDLES INVOF LOW/FRONT/DRYLINE.

GIVEN PERSISTENT LOW-LEVEL JET AND 30 TO 40 KT WSWLY MID-LEVEL FLOW
FORECAST TO OVERSPREAD THIS REGION...A FEW SUPERCELLS WILL LIKELY
EVOLVE -- CAPABLE OF PRODUCING LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS.
INSTABILITY AND SHEAR SHOULD DECREASE WITH NNEWD EXTENT ALONG COLD
FRONT ACROSS KS AND NEB...WHERE A MORE ISOLATED SEVERE THREAT IS
FORECAST.

OVERNIGHT...EXPECT CONVECTION TO SPREAD EWD ACROSS PARTS OF KS AND
OK AS LOW-LEVEL JET INTENSIFIES/VEERS. HOWEVER...SEVERE THREAT
SHOULD SLOWLY DECREASE INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS.

..UPPER MS VALLEY/WRN UPPER GREAT LAKES REGION...
A FEW STORMS MAY BE ONGOING AT THE START OF THE PERIOD OVER THIS
AREA IN ZONE OF WEAK WARM ADVECTION...WITH AN INCREASE IN CONVECTION
FORECAST THROUGH THE DAY AHEAD OF SLOWLY PROGRESSING UPPER TROUGH
AND ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT. DEWPOINTS IN THE 60S COMBINED WITH
DAYTIME HEATING SHOULD YIELD 1000 TO 1500 J/KG MEAN-LAYER
CAPE...SUPPORTING A FEW LOCALLY-STRONGER UPDRAFTS.

UPDRAFT INTENSITY MAY BE ENHANCED SOMEWHAT BY MODERATE /AROUND 30
KT/ SWLY FLOW THROUGH THE LOWER HALF OF THE TROPOSPHERE.
THEREFORE...SOME POTENTIAL FOR ISOLATED SEVERE STORMS EXISTS. ALONG
WITH THREAT FOR HAIL...A LOCALLY-DAMAGING WIND GUST OR TWO MAY ALSO
BE POSSIBLE. THREAT SHOULD DIMINISH OVERNIGHT WITH THE ONSET OF
DIURNAL STABILIZATION.

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1128 AM CDT MON MAY 28 2007

AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS OF SRN NJ AND THE NRN DELMARVA PEN IN NRN/WRN
VA

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 281628Z - 281800Z

A SEASONABLY STRONG MID-LEVEL JET AND ASSOCIATED SHORT WAVE TROUGH
CONTINUE TO PROGRESS THROUGH EASTERN CANADA AND NEW ENGLAND...WELL
TO THE NORTH OF REGION. HOWEVER...ALONG A PRE-FRONTAL WIND SHIFT ON
THE SOUTHERN PERIPHERY OF THE CYCLONIC UPPER FLOW FIELD... STRONG
SURFACE HEATING IS CONTRIBUTING TO AN AXIS OF WEAK TO MODERATE
DESTABILIZATION FROM PARTS OF NORTH CENTRAL VIRGINIA INTO SOUTHERN
NEW JERSEY...AND ALONG/TO THE LEE OF THE BLUE RIDGE. DESPITE WEAK
MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES...AS TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO RISE THROUGH THE
80S...MIXED LAYER CAPE PROBABLY WILL EXCEED 1000 J/KG WITHIN THE
NEXT FEW HOURS. OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS SUGGESTS THAT INHIBITION IS
ALREADY BECOMING NEGLIGIBLE...AND RUC GUIDANCE INDICATES INITIATION
OF ISOLATED TO WIDELY SCATTERED STORMS IS LIKELY DURING THE MID TO
LATE AFTERNOON. LACK OF STRONGER LARGE SCALE FORCING MAY ULTIMATELY
LIMIT COVERAGE OF STORMS THIS AFTERNOON...BUT LOW-LEVEL ENVIRONMENT
WITH STEEP LAPSE RATES WILL CONTRIBUTE TO POTENTIAL FOR LOCALIZED
DOWNBURSTS IN ACTIVITY THAT FORMS. THOUGH NOT STRONG...DEEP LAYER
SHEAR UP TO AROUND 30 KTS COULD ENHANCE HAIL POTENTIAL
SOMEWHAT...PARTICULARLY NEAR THE ATLANTIC CITY NJ AREA BY THE 18-20Z
TIME FRAME.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 281628
SWODY1
SPC AC 281625

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1125 AM CDT MON MAY 28 2007

VALID 281630Z - 291200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF THE NORTHERN
PLAINS...

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE MID
ATLANTIC STATES...

..NORTHERN PLAINS...
STRONG UPPER TROUGH IS DEEPENING OVER ID/WRN MT THIS MORNING...AND
IS FORECAST TO MOVE ACROSS MT/WY THROUGH THE FORECAST PERIOD.
MEANWHILE...STRONG SOUTHERLY LOW LEVEL WINDS ARE TRANSPORTING MOIST
AND UNSTABLE AIR MASS NORTHWARD THROUGH THE NORTHERN PLAINS. THIS
WILL SET THE STAGE FOR NUMEROUS THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON FROM
NORTHWEST MN AND EASTERN ND INTO EASTERN WY AND WESTERN NEB.
PRESENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT COLD FRONT SURGING EASTWARD ACROSS THE
DAKOTAS WILL BE THE PRIMARY FOCUS FOR CONVECTIVE INITIATION BY MID
AFTERNOON...ALONG AN AXIS FROM NEAR DVL - EAST OF BIS - MBG. STEEP
LOW AND MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL COMBINE WITH DEWPOINTS RISING
INTO THE LOWER 60S...RESULTING IN CAPE VALUES OVER 2000 J/KG. UPPER
TROUGH WILL REMAIN WELL WEST OF THIS AREA THIS AFTERNOON...BUT WEAK
LEAD SHORTWAVE TROUGH NOW OVER SOUTHEAST MT MAY AID INITIATION.
SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF VERY LARGE HAIL...DAMAGING WINDS...AND
ISOLATED TORNADOES ARE POSSIBLE. ACTIVITY WILL LIKELY DEVELOP
SOUTHWESTWARD ALONG FRONT INTO RAP/CDR AREA...AND SOUTHWARD ALONG
DRYLINE INTO NORTHEAST CO/WESTERN KS WHERE VERTICAL SHEAR WILL BE
WEAKER. STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO PERSIST MUCH OF THE EVENING AND
SPREAD EASTWARD ACROSS EASTERN DAKOTAS AND INTO WESTERN MN.

ANOTHER AREA OF CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT IS EXPECTED THIS AFTERNOON
OVER NORTHEAST WY. POSTFRONTAL SURFACE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BECOME
NORTHEASTERLY...ENHANCING UPSLOPE FLOW INTO THE BIGHORNS.
INSTABILITY WILL BE MARGINAL...BUT PERHAPS SUFFICIENT FOR ISOLATED
STRONG/SEVERE STORMS CAPABLE OF HAIL AND GUSTY WINDS. THESE STORMS
WILL LIKELY MOVE EASTWARD ACROSS WESTERN SD AFTER DARK.

..MID ATLANTIC...
SOUTHERN FRINGE OF STRONGER WESTERLY FLOW ALOFT LIES ACROSS
PA/MD/NORTHERN VA TODAY. WEAK RESIDUAL SURFACE BOUNDARY EXTENDS
FROM EASTERN WV INTO NJ...AND MAY BE FOCUS FOR ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON. VERTICAL SHEAR IS RATHER WEAK AND
WILL LIMIT CONVECTIVE ORGANIZATION. HOWEVER...STRONG HEATING WILL
LEAD TO STEEP LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND THE POTENTIAL FOR
GUSTY/DAMAGING WINDS IN STRONGEST CELLS.
