DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0151 PM CST SAT FEB 09 2008

VALID 092000Z - 101200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SOUTH FL...

BOUNDARY LAYER AIRMASS HAS STEEPENED SIGNIFICANTLY ACROSS SOUTH FL
THIS AFTERNOON WHERE LATEST SFC-3KM VALUES ARE IN EXCESS OF 8 C/KM.
THIS IS REFLECTED IN RECENT INCREASE OF SHOWERS AND ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS...MAINLY SOUTH OF LAKE OKEECHOBEE. IT APPEARS
THUNDERSTORMS WILL GRADUALLY INCREASE IN AREAL COVERAGE/INTENSITY
OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS PRIMARILY DRIVEN BY LAND/SEA BREEZE
INTERACTIONS. MARGINAL SHEAR WILL LIMIT ORGANIZATIONAL/SEVERE
POTENTIAL.

..OH VALLEY TO MIDDLE ATLANTIC...

DEEP WLY FLOW AND STRONG SUNSHINE HAS AIDED DESTABILIZATION ACROSS
ERN MO/IL/IND. LATEST DIAGNOSTIC DATA SUPPORTS THIS WITH SFC-BASED
PARCELS NOW BUOYANT...ROUGHLY 200 J/KG CAPE...AHEAD OF APPROACHING
COLD FRONT. MODELS CONTINUE TO SUGGEST CONVECTION WILL DEVELOP
ALONG LEADING EDGE OF THIS UNSTABLE AIRMASS...FARTHER DOWNSTREAM
OVER SRN IND LATER THIS EVENING. ANY THUNDERSTORMS THAT DEVELOP
SHOULD SPREAD EAST QUICKLY AS COLD FRONT SURGES ACROSS THE OH
VALLEY.

LOW LEVEL JET WILL STRENGTHEN MARKEDLY ACROSS NWRN TX INTO MO LATER
DAY2 IN RESPONSE TO DIGGING SPEED MAX APPROACHING THE CNTRL ROCKIES.
IT APPEARS LOW LEVEL WARM ADVECTION ATOP SHALLOW ARCTIC AIRMASS
WILL BE PRIMARILY RESPONSIBLE FOR MOISTENING/DESTABILIZING PARCELS
ABOVE THE BOUNDARY LAYER. LATEST VIS IMAGERY SUPPORTS THIS IDEA AS
LOW LEVEL MOISTURE RETURN IS UNDERWAY ACROSS THE COASTAL PLAINS OF
TX. FORECAST SOUNDINGS AFTER MIDNIGHT ACROSS SERN KS/SWRN MO
SUGGEST ELEVATED CAPE ON THE ORDER OF 200-300 J/KG...MORE THAN
ADEQUATE FOR LIGHTNING WITHIN DEEPER CLOUD STRUCTURES.
ADDITIONALLY...MOST OF THIS ACTIVITY WILL DEVELOP ACROSS A REGION
THAT WILL BE SUB-FREEZING AT THE SURFACE SO THUNDER SLEET OR

..OH VALLEY TO MID ATLANTIC COAST...
A COLD UPPER TROUGH WILL REMAIN OVER THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN UNITED
STATES TODAY...WHILE UPPER RIDGING BUILDS INTO THE SOUTHWEST STATES.
MODELS ARE IN AGREEMENT THAT STRONG MID LEVEL JET MAX OVER KY/TN
WILL DEVELOP EAST-NORTHEASTWARD TODAY INTO THE MID ATLANTIC REGION.
THE LEFT-EXIT REGION OF THIS JET WILL OVERSPREAD THE MID/UPPER OH
VALLEY THIS AFTERNOON...WHERE STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND COLD
TEMPERATURES ALOFT ARE FORECAST. LOW LEVEL MOISTURE WILL BE QUITE
SPARSE...BUT SUFFICIENT INSTABILITY MAY BE PRESENT FOR SHOWERS AND
ISOLATED LIGHTNING STRIKES ALONG A NARROW AXIS FROM SOUTHEAST IND TO
THE NJ/DE COAST. OVERALL COVERAGE OF THUNDERSTORMS IS ANTICIPATED
TO BE VERY LOW.

..SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST NEXT TUESDAY INTO
EARLY WEDNESDAY /FEB 12-13/...

CONSIDERABLE SPREAD EXISTS AMONG MREF MEMBERS CONCERNING SHORT WAVE
DEVELOPMENTS WITHIN AN AMPLIFIED BELT OF WESTERLIES ACROSS THE U.S.
EARLY NEXT WEEK. AND...THIS GROWS THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE
FORECAST PERIOD. HOWEVER...THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE LATEST MREF
MEANS AND THE ECMWF LEND SUPPORT FOR GROWING SEVERE POTENTIAL ACROSS
PARTS OF THE EASTERN GULF AND SOUTH ATLANTIC COAST STATES...
INCLUDING MUCH OF THE FLORIDA PENINSULA...BY NEXT TUESDAY. A RAPID
MOISTENING OF THE CENTRAL/EASTERN GULF OF MEXICO BOUNDARY LAYER...
AND INLAND ADVECTION...APPEARS PROBABLE IN ASSOCIATION WITH A
SUBTROPICAL IMPULSE PRECEDING THE MAIN POLAR WAVE. AND...A
SUBSEQUENT STRENGTHENING OF FLOW FIELDS...AND DEEP LAYER/LOW-LEVEL
SHEAR PROFILES...IN CONJUNCTION WITH AT LEAST WEAK DESTABILIZATION
AHEAD OF THE APPROACHING UPPER IMPULSE...IS EXPECTED TO SUPPORT
CONSIDERABLE SEVERE POTENTIAL. THIS WILL INCLUDE THE RISK FOR

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0216 AM CST SAT FEB 09 2008

VALID 111200Z - 121200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS LATE MON/MONDAY NIGHT ACROSS
PARTS OF THE SOUTH CENTRAL PLAINS....

..SYNOPSIS...
AMPLIFICATION WITHIN THE POLAR STREAM ACROSS THE NORTHERN/EASTERN
PACIFIC INTO THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST/ROCKIES LATE THIS WEEKEND IS
EXPECTED TO CONTINUE AN EASTWARD TRANSLATION THROUGH THIS FORECAST
PERIOD. WITHIN THIS REGIME...A SIGNIFICANT SHORT WAVE IMPULSE IS
PROGGED TO CONTINUE DIGGING TO THE LEE OF THE NORTHERN ROCKIES...AS
AN UPSTREAM RIDGE PROGRESSES INLAND ACROSS THE PACIFIC COAST...AHEAD
OF A SERIES OF STRONG IMPULSES EMANATING FROM AN INTENSE ZONAL
UPSTREAM JET. AT THE SAME TIME...MODELS SUGGEST THAT FLOW WILL
STRENGTHEN WITHIN A BELT EXTENDING OUT OF THE SUBTROPICAL PACIFIC
THROUGH THE MEXICAN PLATEAU...WITH AN INITIAL EMBEDDED BROAD SHORT
WAVE IMPULSE PROGRESSING EASTWARD INTO THE WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO.

LARGE SPREAD PERSISTS AMONG THE MODELS CONCERNING THE EVOLUTION OF
THE DIGGING SHORT WAVE TO THE LEE OF THE ROCKIES. BUT...THE BULK OF
GUIDANCE APPEARS TO SUGGEST THAT AN INCREASINGLY DIVERGENT UPPER
FLOW FIELD...ASSOCIATED WITH THE INTERACTING STREAMS OF FLOW ...WILL
BECOME FOCUSED ACROSS THE SOUTH CENTRAL PLAINS SOMETIME LATE MONDAY
OR MONDAY NIGHT. AND...WITH A CONDITIONALLY/ CONVECTIVELY UNSTABLE
ENVIRONMENT EXPECTED TO BE IN PLACE ACROSS THIS REGION BY THAT
TIME...THIS FORCING IS EXPECTED TO CONTRIBUTE TO A SUBSTANTIAL
INCREASE IN THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY...SOME OF WHICH COULD BECOME
SEVERE.

..SOUTH CENTRAL STATES...
CONTINUED LOW-LEVEL MOISTENING ON SOUTHERLY RETURN FLOW ACROSS THE
LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY THROUGH THE SOUTHERN PLAINS/OZARK PLATEAU
REGION IS EXPECTED MONDAY. THIS APPEARS LIKELY TO OCCUR BENEATH A
CAPPING ELEVATED MIXED LAYER...WHICH MODELS SUGGEST WILL CONTRIBUTE
TO MOST UNSTABLE CAPE ON THE ORDER OF 1000 J/KG...NEAR A STALLED
FRONTAL ZONE EXTENDING ACROSS THE SOUTH CENTRAL PLAINS AND OZARKS.

WHILE THE TIMING OF STRONG MID/UPPER FORCING IS STILL UNCLEAR /ONSET
CURRENTLY SEEMS MOST PROBABLE EARLY MONDAY EVENING/...IT SHOULD BE
SUFFICIENT TO WEAKEN CAP...LIKELY SUPPORTING THE INITIATION OF
STORMS EAST OF A DRY LINE/FRONTAL INTERSECTION ACROSS
CENTRAL/NORTHERN OKLAHOMA. WITHIN THE PRESENCE OF STRONG DEEP LAYER
SHEAR AND SIZABLE CLOCKWISE CURVED LOW-LEVEL HODOGRAPHS...A FEW
SUPERCELLS APPEAR POSSIBLE...BEFORE CONVECTION EXPANDS IN
COVERAGE...DEVELOPING EAST NORTHEASTWARD THROUGH THE OZARK
PLATEAU...AND SOUTHWARD THROUGH THE RED RIVER VALLEY.

GIVEN THE SHARPNESS OF THE FRONT...AND THE ANTICIPATED WEAKNESS OF
THE SURFACE FRONTAL WAVE DEVELOPMENT...IT APPEARS THAT STORMS WILL
TEND TO EITHER FORM ABOVE THE FRONTAL INVERSION...OR QUICKLY BECOME
UNDERCUT BY THE FRONT...WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ADVANCING
SOUTHWARD MONDAY EVENING. THIS MAY MITIGATE ANY TORNADO/DAMAGING
WIND POTENTIAL. BUT...AT LEAST THE RISK FOR HAIL WILL EXIST...SOME
OF WHICH COULD BECOME FAIRLY LARGE BEFORE STORMS WEAKEN LATER MONDAY
NIGHT.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
A PROGRESSIVE...VIGOROUS SHORT WAVE IMPULSE OF ARCTIC ORIGINS...
WITH A MID-LEVEL COLD CORE TO -40C...IS PROGGED TO DIG INTO THE
GREAT LAKES REGION BY 12Z SUNDAY...BEFORE LIFTING ACROSS NORTHERN
ATLANTIC COASTAL AREAS LATER SUNDAY/SUNDAY NIGHT. MODELS INDICATE
THAT THIS WILL OCCUR IN PHASE WITH A TROUGH IN THE BRANCH OF POLAR
WESTERLIES EMANATING FROM THE NORTHERN PACIFIC...AS AMPLIFICATION
OCCURS ACROSS THE EASTERN PACIFIC THROUGH THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST AND
ROCKIES.

AS A BUILDING UPPER RIDGE EDGES TOWARD THE PACIFIC COAST...A
SIGNIFICANT DOWNSTREAM SHORT WAVE TROUGH IS FORECAST TO BEGIN
DIGGING ACROSS THE NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN AND NORTHERN ROCKIES. AT
THE SAME TIME...A BROAD IMPULSE...WITHIN A WEAKER STREAM EMANATING
FROM THE SUBTROPICAL PACIFIC...IS EXPECTED TO GRADUALLY PROGRESS
ACROSS THE MEXICAN PLATEAU AND PARTS OF THE LOWER RIO GRANDE
VALLEY...AS AN UPSTREAM SYSTEM DIGS TOWARD THE BAJA SPUR.

IN RESPONSE TO THE EVOLVING UPPER PATTERN...A SURFACE TROUGH LIKELY
WILL DEEPEN TO THE LEE OF THE ROCKIES DURING THIS PERIOD...AS A
LARGE COLD SURFACE RIDGE BEGINS TO RETREAT TO THE EAST OF THE
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY. THIS WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY A DEVELOPING RETURN
FLOW OFF THE WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO...WHERE SURFACE DEW POINTS ARE
NOW THE LOWER/MID 60S...AND THE BOUNDARY LAYER SHOULD NOT BE
SUBSTANTIALLY IMPACTED BY THE NEW ARCTIC INTRUSION INTO THE EASTERN
STATES.

..EAST CENTRAL PLAINS INTO THE OZARK PLATEAU...
NORTHWESTERLY TO WESTERLY LOWER/MID TROPOSPHERIC FLOW IS EXPECTED TO
MAINTAIN A RELATIVELY WARM ELEVATED MIXED LAYER ACROSS MUCH OF THE
CENTRAL/SOUTHERN PLAINS THROUGH THIS PERIOD. AND...IN THE WAKE OF
AN ARCTIC INTRUSION NOW IN THE PROCESS OF NOSING SOUTHEAST OF THE
NORTH CENTRAL STATES...A SHARP LOW-LEVEL BAROCLINIC ZONE IS FORECAST
TO SET UP ACROSS THE SOUTH CENTRAL PLAINS/OZARK PLATEAU REGION.

MOISTURE RETURNING FROM THE WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO...SUNDAY INTO
SUNDAY EVENING...WILL OVERRUN THIS BOUNDARY...BUT MAY BE INITIALLY
CAPPED ACROSS MUCH OF OKLAHOMA/SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS. HOWEVER...WITH
TIME...MODELS INDICATE THAT A STRENGTHENING SOUTHERLY LOW-LEVEL JET
WILL STEEPEN ISENTROPIC ASCENT ON THE NOSE OF THE ELEVATED WARM
LAYER...ACROSS PARTS OF EASTERN KANSAS INTO THE MISSOURI
OZARKS...POSSIBLY ADJACENT AREAS OF NORTHEAST OKLAHOMA/NORTHERN
ARKANSAS. AND...SUFFICIENT MOISTENING IS EXPECTED FOR AT LEAST WEAK
DESTABILIZATION SUPPORTIVE OF SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY BY
LATE SUNDAY NIGHT. WHILE SHEAR IN THE CLOUD BEARING LAYER WILL BE
FAVORABLE FOR UPDRAFT ROTATION...CAPE IS NOT CURRENTLY EXPECTED TO
BECOME SUFFICIENT TO SUPPORT AN APPRECIABLE SEVERE THREAT... THOUGH
COOL PROFILES COULD ALLOW SOME SMALL HAIL TO REACH THE SURFACE IN
HEAVIER CONVECTIVE CORES.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...

A SERIES OF VORTICITY MAXIMA WILL ROTATE THROUGH UPPER TROUGH AS IT
ADVANCES EWD THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES...OH VALLEY AND NERN STATES
SATURDAY. ATTENDANT SURFACE LOW IS FORECAST TO CONSOLIDATE OVER SRN
CANADA BY SATURDAY NIGHT...THEN DEEPEN AS A STRONG UPPER JET DROPS
SEWD INTO THE GREAT LAKES AND OH VALLEY.

..S FL...

SHORTWAVE TROUGH NOW MOVING INTO THE OH VALLEY WILL EJECT NEWD INTO
THE NERN STATES DURING THE DAY. IN WAKE OF THIS FEATURE...BOUNDARY
LAYER FLOW WILL VEER TO NWLY ACROSS FL...REINFORCING THE FRONT OVER
SRN FL. THIS BOUNDARY WILL THEN MOVE OFFSHORE BY SATURDAY NIGHT.
THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT WILL ONCE AGAIN SUPPORT A FEW
THUNDERSTORMS ALONG AND AHEAD OF THE FRONT SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

..PORTION OF NERN STATES...

STEEPER...6.5-7 C/KM...MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL ATTEND SHORTWAVE
TROUGH AS IT ADVANCES INTO THE NERN STATES SATURDAY. PRECIPITATION
DEVELOPING WITHIN ZONE OF WARM ADVECTION AND LIFT WILL SPREAD NEWD
THROUGH THIS REGION. AS LAPSE RATES STEEPEN AND LOW LEVEL
TEMPERATURES WARM...SOME OF THE PRECIPITATION COULD BECOME
CONVECTIVE IN NATURE. HOWEVER...INSTABILITY WILL REMAIN MEAGER DUE
TO LIMITED LOW LEVEL MOISTURE RETURN. WILL MAINTAIN A THUNDERSTORM
AREA...BUT CURRENT THINKING IS THAT LIGHTNING COVERAGE WILL REMAIN
AOB 10% IF IT OCCURS AT ALL.

..OH VALLEY...

VERY STEEP...8-8.5 C/KM...MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND COLD AIR ALOFT
WILL ATTEND AN UPSTREAM VORT MAX LOCATED WITHIN EXIT REGION OF SEWD
ADVANCING JET AS IT MOVES INTO OH VALLEY SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND
EVENING. THIS ALONG WITH SURFACE HEATING MAY RESULT IN SOME
DESTABILIZATION BY LATE AFTERNOON. HOWEVER...INSTABILITY WILL REMAIN
VERY MARGINAL OWING TO THE DRY BOUNDARY LAYER. SOME CONVECTIVE
PRECIPITATION MAY DEVELOP WITHIN ZONE OF ASCENT ATTENDING THIS
FEATURE. IT APPEARS ANY LIGHTNING ACTIVITY SHOULD REMAIN SPARSE
OWING TO EXPECTED LIMITED CAPE.
