TORNADOES...HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND
GUSTS TO 70 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE
AREAS.

THE TORNADO WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 35 STATUTE
MILES NORTH AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM 20 MILES WEST NORTHWEST OF

DISCUSSION...SHEAR REMAINS QUITE STRONG ACROSS NERN KS...AND LOW
LEVEL SHEAR WILL STRENGTHEN FURTHER THROUGH THE EVENING ALONG SSWLY

STORMS TO ROOT INTO BOUNDARY LAYER SUPPORTS A RISK OF TORNADOES THIS
EVENING. LARGE HAIL AND ISOLATED DAMAGING WINDS ARE ADDITIONAL
RISKS.

AVIATION...TORNADOES AND A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL
SURFACE AND ALOFT TO 2 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE

AREAS AFFECTED...NERN NV...ERN OR...SRN/CNTRL ID...NWRN UT

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 032154Z - 032300Z

ISOLD STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS WILL CONTINUE TO DEVELOP THIS
AFTERNOON...WITH PRIMARY THREATS OF DMGG WINDS AND HEAVY RAINFALL.
RAINFALL RATES MAY EXCEED ONE INCH AN HOUR AT TIMES. DUE TO ISOLD
NATURE...A WW IS NOT ANTICIPATED.

RELATIVELY STAGNANT PATTERN IS ONCE AGAIN FAVORABLE FOR ISOLD STRONG
TO SEVERE STORMS THIS AFTERNOON AROUND THE PERIPHERY OF A FLATTENING
UPPER RIDGE TO THE SOUTH AND EAST. A VORTICITY MAXIMUM NOW MOVING
NEWD INTO NERN CA/WRN NV HAS PROVIDED FAVORABLE ASCENT FOR CLUSTERS
OF STORMS ACROSS THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF NV/OR/ID IN COMBINATION WITH
WELL ABOVE NORMAL PWAT/MOISTURE. MLCAPE NEAR 750 TO 1000 J/KG AND
NEARLY STRAIGHT LINE HODOGRAPHS WILL BE SUPPORTIVE OF OCCASIONAL
ROTATION/SPLITTING CELLS. DESPITE RELATIVELY HIGH WBZ
HEIGHTS...MARGINAL TO SEVERE HAIL WILL BE POSSIBLE IN STRONGER
CORES. STEEP LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL FAVOR DMGG WINDS...WITH
OUTFLOWS ACCELERATING TOWARDS THE LOWER VALLEYS WHERE
TEMPERATURE/DEW POINT SPREADS AND INSTABILITY ARE GREATER. DMGG WIND
GUSTS MAY OCCUR WELL REMOVED FROM THUNDERSTORMS. GIVEN HIGH MOISTURE
CONTENT AND SOMEWHAT WEAK FLOW...HEAVY RAINFALL WITH RATES AOA AN
INCH AN HOUR ARE POSSIBLE.

VALID 032021Z - 032215Z

A FEW SEVERE HAIL STORMS ARE LIKELY LATER THIS AFTERNOON...BUT A WW
IS NOT ANTICIPATED.

SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS A WEAK COLD FRONT OVER NWRN MN WITH A WARM
FRONT/OUTFLOW BOUNDARY W-E ACROSS SRN ALBERTA. AMPLE SUNSHINE
EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON HAS ALLOWED TEMPERATURES TO RISE INTO THE 80S
F OVER MUCH OF NERN MT.

SELY SURFACE WINDS ARE MAINTAINING MID TO UPPER 50S F DEWPOINTS
ACROSS ERN MT. A MODIFIED 17Z GGW SOUNDING SHOWS 1000-1500 J/KG
MLCAPE WITH GENERALLY WEAK BUT VEERING FLOW IN THE LOWEST 6 KM. AT

COOL...AND WINDS PICK UP ABOVE 400 MB.

STORMS SHOULD INCREASE IN COVERAGE OVER NERN MT AS THE COLD FRONT
APPROACHES...WITH ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY POSSIBLY MOVING SEWD OUT OF
ALBERTA. HAIL WILL BE THE MAIN SEVERE THREAT...ALTHOUGH LOCALLY
GUSTY WINDS WILL BE POSSIBLE WHERE BOUNDARY LAYER T/TD SPREADS ARE

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

EASTERN COLORADO
NORTHWEST KANSAS

EFFECTIVE THIS FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 300 PM UNTIL
1000 PM CDT.

HAIL TO 1.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 60
STATUTE MILES NORTH AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM 50 MILES WEST OF
BURLINGTON COLORADO TO 55 MILES EAST NORTHEAST OF RUSSELL KANSAS.
FOR A COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE ASSOCIATED WATCH
OUTLINE UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU0).

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

DISCUSSION...THROUGH LATE AFTERNOON...THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO
DEVELOP AND INCREASE NEAR LEE/THERMAL LOW AND ASSOCIATED WARM FRONT
SITUATED FROM ERN CO INTO NWRN KS. AIR MASS ACROSS THESE AREAS HAS
BECOME VERY HOT AND MODERATELY UNSTABLE WITH MLCAPE OF 1200-2000 J
PER KG AND DEEPLY MIXED BOUNDARY LAYER. LARGE SURFACE DEWPOINT
DEPRESSIONS SHOULD SUPPORT STRONG TO DAMAGING DOWNBURST WINDS AND
OUTFLOW DOMINANT STORMS. SOME ORGANIZATION POTENTIAL TO STORM
UPDRAFTS MAY EVOLVE WITH TIME AS STRONGER MID-LEVEL FLOW AND WEAK
SHORT WAVE DISTURBANCE DEVELOP EWD FROM CO/ROCKIES. THUS...EXPECT
INITIALLY ISOLATED STORMS TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE AND ORGANIZATION
WITH GREATER CHANCE FOR WIND AND SEVERE HAIL INTO THE EVENING HOURS.

AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0239 PM CDT FRI JUL 03 2009

VALID 032000Z - 041200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE CNTRL HIGH
PLAINS...CNTRL PLAINS AND MID-MO VALLEY...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF CNTRL AND ERN
MT...

THE GREATEST CHANGE TO THE 20Z OUTLOOK IS TO TAKE THE SLIGHT RISK
OUT OF FLORIDA. ALTHOUGH MODERATE INSTABILITY IS IN PLACE IN
FL...STORM COVERAGE IS LESS THAN EXPECTED. IN ADDITION...VERY WEAK
VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES SHOULD KEEP ANY SEVERE THREAT MARGINAL THIS
AFTERNOON. ANOTHER CHANGE TO THE OUTLOOK IS TO ADD PARTS OF WRN AND
NRN NEB INTO THE SLIGHT RISK AREA WHERE MODERATE INSTABILITY IS
ALREADY IN PLACE ACCORDING TO THE RUC. MODEL FORECASTS DEVELOP
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS IN THE NEB PANHANDLE WHERE WSR-88D VWPS
SUGGEST VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES ARE ADEQUATE FOR SEVERE STORMS WITH
HAIL THE MOST LIKELY THREAT. ANOTHER CHANGE TO THE OUTLOOK IS TO
MAKE THE SLIGHT RISK IN ERN MONTANA SMALLER AND CO-LOCATED WITH A
POCKET OF MODERATE INSTABILITY ANALYZED BY THE RUC.
LASTLY...ADJUSTED THE 5 PERCENT PROBABILITIES TO BETTER AGREE WITH
CURRENT CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT...MESOSCALE FEATURES AND SHORT-TERM
MODEL FORECASTS.

..BROYLES.. 07/03/2009

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1141 AM CDT FRI JUL 03 2009/

...CENTRAL PLAINS...
WEAK/ELEVATED TSTMS FROM SRN NEB TO KS/MO BORDER AREA APPEAR THE
RESULT OF WEAK MID LEVEL DISTURBANCE AND MARGINAL ISENTROPIC LIFT ON
THE NOSE OF PLAINS LLJ EARLY TODAY. AS THIS LEADING DISTURBANCE
CRESTS THE UPPER RIDGE...A SERIES OF STRONGER SHORT WAVE IMPULSES
ARE FORECAST TO DEVELOP EAST AND FLATTEN THE NRN PERIPHERY OF HOT
SUB-TROPICAL ANTICYCLONE ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS. LEE/THERMAL LOW...
CURRENTLY NEAR CO/KS BORDER...WILL MAKE SLOW EWD PROGRESS INTO KS
THIS AFTERNOON. LIFT AND LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE ARE LIKELY TO BE
ENHANCED NEAR THIS LOW BY THE APPROACH OF MID LEVEL SHORT WAVES NOW
OVER WY/CO AND NM PER WV IMAGERY. DESPITE WARM TEMPS ALOFT...INTENSE
SURFACE HEATING ALONG AND SOUTH OF DIFFERENTIAL HEATING/WARM FRONTAL
BOUNDARY SETTING UP NEAR KS/NEB BORDER WILL CONTRIBUTE TO SCATTERED
SURFACE BASED TSTM INITIATION NEAR THE LOW AND WARM FRONT LATER
TODAY. ADDITIONAL STORMS ARE LIKELY DEVELOP AND INCREASE ACROSS THE
HIGHER TERRAIN OF NM/CO/WY AND SPREAD EAST WITH THE APPROACHING
SHORT WAVE DISTURBANCES AND HEATING OF THE DAY.

ACROSS KS/NEB AND POINTS EAST...SLY/SELY LOW LEVEL FLOW WILL VEER
AND INCREASE WITH HEIGHT RESULTING IN DEEP-LAYER EFFECTIVE SHEAR ON
THE ORDER OF 40-50KT. THIS SHOULD PROVE SUFFICIENT FOR SUPERCELLS
NEAR THE LOW AND WARM FRONT FROM LATE AFTERNOON INTO THE EVENING.
ALONG WITH LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS...A TORNADO OR TWO CANNOT
BE COMPLETELY RULED OUT WITH ANY DISCRETE AND PERSISTENT SUPERCELL
TRACKING NEAR THESE SURFACE FEATURES.

FORECAST STRENGTHENING OF THE LLJ TO AOA 50 KT AFTER DARK SUGGESTS
ANY CONGEALING TSTM CLUSTERS MAY CONTINUE TO BE SUPPORTED LATE INTO
THE NIGHT AND PERHAPS GROW UPSCALE INTO LINEAR MCS SPREADING EAST
ACROSS THE MO RIVER VALLEY AND INTO PARTS OF IA/MO BY EARLY SAT.
MORE ORGANIZED COLD POOL AND DEEP CONVECTION PREFERENTIALLY ALIGNED
WITH STRENGTHENING LOW THROUGH MID LEVEL FLOW COULD RESULT IN
SCATTERED DAMAGING WINDS ACROSS THESE AREAS THROUGH LATE TONIGHT.

...FL WWD ALONG IMMEDIATE GULF COAST...
EXPECT TSTMS TO CONTINUES TO DEVELOP AND INCREASE IN AREAL COVERAGE
INTO THIS AFTERNOON ALONG AND SOUTH OF QUASI-STATIONARY FRONTAL ZONE
OVER NRN FL. WHILE MID LEVEL FLOW ACROSS THE REGION WILL REMAIN
MARGINAL FOR GREATER STORM ORGANIZATION...LATEST OBJECTIVE DATA
INDICATES THAT INTENSE HEATING WAS RESULTING IN STRONG INCREASE IN
DCAPE VALUES FROM THE ERN PNHDL ACROSS NRN FL ATTM. GIVEN WEAK
INHIBITION AND ABUNDANT MOISTURE/INSTABILITY...EXPECT MARGINALLY
ORGANIZED/MULTICELL TSTMS WITH THE CAPABILITY OF DAMAGING WINDS AND
SOME HAIL TO PERSIST ACROSS MUCH OF FL WELL INTO THE AFTERNOON.

...MT...
WEAK MID LEVEL DISTURBANCE AND ASSOCIATED FRONTAL SURGE EAST OF THE
HIGH TERRAIN COMBINED WITH GREATER LOW LEVEL MOISTURE AND INCREASING
INSTABILITY SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO INCREASINGLY STRONG TSTMS ACROSS
CNTRL/ERN MT TODAY. A FEW STOUT CELLS WERE ALREADY DEVELOPING OFF
THE HIGHER TERRAIN AND EXPECT THIS TREND TO CONTINUE. DEEP-LAYER
SHEAR ON THE ORDER OF 30-35KT SUGGESTS A FEW STORMS COULD ATTAIN
SUPERCELL CHARACTERISTIC WITH ATTENDANT THREATS OF LARGE HAIL AND
HIGH WINDS.

...NORTHEAST...
UNUSUALLY DEEP MEAN TROUGHING ACROSS NEW ENGLAND AND PARTS OF THE
NORTHEAST WILL BE REINFORCED THIS PERIOD AS ANOTHER STRONG IMPULSE
DIVES SEWD FROM ONTARIO AND PRODUCES ANOTHER ROUND OF WEAK HEIGHT
FALLS ACROSS NERN NY AND NRN NEW ENGLAND. LOW STATIC STABILITY AND
MARGINAL BACKGROUND ASCENT WITHIN THE TROUGH AXIS WILL AGAIN FAVOR A
DIURNAL INCREASE IN CONVECTION...ESPECIALLY ACROSS THOSE AREAS
RECEIVING GREATER SURFACE HEATING THROUGH EARLY AFTERNOON. LIMITED
CAPE AND MARGINAL CLOUD-BEARING SHEAR WITHIN THE SLACK FLOW IN THE
TROUGH AXIS SUGGEST THAT SEVERE STORM POTENTIAL SHOULD BE LOW.
HOWEVER...A FEW STORMS WILL BE CAPABLE OF HAIL/BRIEF STRONG/GUSTY
WIND FROM LATE AFTERNOON TO EARLY EVENING.

...SOUTHEAST ACROSS INTERMOUNTAIN WEST...
INTENSE SURFACE HEATING ON THE WRN PERIPHERY OF MONSOON MOISTURE
PLUME SHOULD SPUR WIDESPREAD TSTM DEVELOPMENT FROM AZ ACROSS UT AS
WELL AS THE ROCKIES AND INTO THE INTERIOR NW. MUCH OF THIS
CONVECTION WILL BE WEAKLY ORGANIZED DUE TO LIMITED FLOW/SHEAR AND
WILL BE TIED TO ELEVATED HEAT SOURCES/TERRAIN. ISOLATED STRONG TO
SEVERE WIND GUSTS AND PERHAPS A FEW MARGINAL SEVERE HAIL EVENTS
COULD OCCUR THROUGH THE LATE AFTERNOON.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE CNTRL HIGH
PLAINS...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE SRN
PLAINS...OZARKS AND MID-MS VALLEY...

...CNTRL HIGH PLAINS...
AN UPPER-LEVEL RIDGE WILL REMAIN IN PLACE ACROSS THE ROCKIES THROUGH
SATURDAY. AT THE SFC...A LEE TROUGH IS FORECAST FROM SE MT SSEWD
INTO ERN WY AND ERN CO. THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD DEVELOP IN THE HIGHER
TERRAIN AND ALONG THE SFC TROUGH AS SFC TEMPS WARM DURING THE DAY.
THE ACTIVITY SHOULD EXPAND IN COVERAGE ESEWD ACROSS THE HIGH PLAINS
INTO AN AXIS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY. FORECAST SOUNDINGS ALONG THIS
AXIS AT 00Z GENERALLY SHOW 0-6 KM SHEAR VALUES IN THE 35 TO 40 KT
RANGE MAINLY DUE TO SPEED SHEAR IN THE MID TO UPPER-LEVELS. THIS
ALONG WITH STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES COULD SUPPORT A FEW
SUPERCELLS WITH LARGE HAIL POTENTIAL. THE GREATEST THREAT FOR
ORGANIZED SEVERE SHOULD EXIST FROM ECNTRL WY SWD ACROSS ERN CO WHERE
SFC DEWPOINTS SHOULD BE A BIT HIGHER THAN AREAS TO THE NORTH
RESULTING IN SLIGHTLY GREATER INSTABILITY. ALTHOUGH LOW-LEVEL WINDS
SHOULD BE RELATIVELY WEAK ACROSS THE REGION...0-3 KM LAPSE RATES
EXCEEDING 3.0 C/KM COULD BE SUPPORTIVE OF ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND
GUSTS WITH THE MORE PERSISTENT STORMS. VERTICAL SHEAR AND
INSTABILITY ON MODEL FORECASTS GRADUALLY DROP WITH SWD EXTENT ACROSS
PARTS OF CNTRL AND NRN NM WHERE A FEW MARGINALLY SEVERE STORMS MAY
DEVELOP DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON.

...SRN PLAINS/OZARKS/MID-MS VALLEY...
A LOW-AMPLITUDE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH IS FORECAST TO MOVE ESEWD ACROSS
THE MID-MS VALLEY SATURDAY AS A SFC LOW DRIFTS EWD ACROSS NRN MO AND
SRN IL. A CLUSTER OF THUNDERSTORMS COULD BE ONGOING ALONG A WARM
FRONT EAST OF THE LOW SATURDAY MORNING WITH THIS COMPLEX PERSISTING
OR REDEVELOPING EWD INTO THE OH VALLEY BY AFTERNOON. OTHER
THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD DEVELOP ALONG A COLD FRONT EXTENDING FROM
SCNTRL MO WWD INTO ERN OK. THIS ACTIVITY SHOULD INCREASE IN COVERAGE
MOVING SEWD ACROSS AN AXIS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY WHERE SFC
DEWPOINTS ARE FORECAST TO BE IN THE UPPER 60S F. FORECAST SOUNDINGS
ALONG THIS CORRIDOR AT 00Z SHOW 30 TO 40 KT OF FLOW IN THE LOW TO
MID-LEVELS RESULTING IN SUFFICIENT VERTICAL SHEAR FOR SEVERE STORMS.
MODEL FORECASTS SUGGEST THE DOMINANT STORM MODE COULD BE LINEAR
WHICH IS SUPPORTED BY THE LATEST WRF/NAM/NAMKF MODELS. IN THIS
CASE...WIND DAMAGE WOULD BE POSSIBLE WITH EMBEDDED LINE-SEGMENTS
ESPECIALLY AS LOW-LEVEL FLOW INCREASES IN THE EARLY EVENING
ASSOCIATED WITH A 30-40 KT LOW-LEVEL JET. HAIL WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE
WITH SUPERCELLS EARLY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LINE OR WITH
ROTATING STORMS EMBEDDED IN THE LINE. IF A LINEAR MCS CAN PERSIST
THROUGH THE MID-EVENING...THEN THE SEVERE PROBABILITIES MAY NEED TO
BE UPGRADED FOR A MORE WIDESPREAD WIND DAMAGE THREAT. THE SEVERE
THREAT SHOULD EXTEND WSWWD INTO OK AND THE FAR ERN TX PANHANDLE
WHERE MODEL FORECASTS SHOW MODERATE INSTABILITY AND VERY STEEP
LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES BELOW 700 MB.

...FLORIDA...
A VERY MOIST AND UNSTABLE AIRMASS WILL BE IN PLACE ACROSS SOUTHERN
AND CNTRL FLORIDA SATURDAY WITH SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING
ALONG SEA BREEZE BOUNDARIES AND ACROSS THE PENINSULA BY MIDDAY.
FORECAST SOUNDINGS AT 21Z ACROSS PARTS OF CNTRL FL SHOW MUCAPE
VALUES AROUND 3000 J/KG WITH 0-3 KM LAPSE RATES APPROACHING 8.0
C/KM. THIS COULD BE SUFFICIENT FOR ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS IN
SPITE OF THE WEAK SHEAR ENVIRONMENT.
