CONVECTION WILL INCREASE OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS IN FAVORABLE
UPSLOPE BEFORE PROGRESSING EWD. DMGG WINDS...LARGE HAIL...AND ISOLD
BRIEF TORNADOES WILL BE POSSIBLE.

ABOVE NORMAL PWAT/MOISTURE HAS BEEN SUPPORTING THUNDERSTORM
DEVELOPMENT THIS AFTERNOON IN FAVORED UPSLOPE IN NERN/E CNTRL CO AS
LOW LEVEL FLOW REMAINS SELY/ELY...WHILE VISIBLE IMAGERY SHOWS A
DEVELOPING CU FIELD IN SERN WY. AMPLE SURFACE HEATING AND DEW POINTS
PRIMARILY IN THE MID TO UPPER 50S IN COMBINATION WITH STEEP MID
LEVEL LAPSE RATES HAVE ALLOWED THE ATMOSPHERE TO BECOME WEAKLY TO
MODERATELY UNSTABLE. AS FURTHER DESTABILIZATION OCCURS...EXPECT AN
INCREASE IN CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SEVERAL VORT
MAXIMA ROTATING AROUND THE PERIPHERY OF THE UPPER HIGH...OVERALL
FLOW/UPPER SUPPORT REMAINS SOMEWHAT MARGINAL. HOWEVER...ROUGHLY 30
KTS OF EFFECTIVE SHEAR MAY BE CONDUCIVE TO ORGANIZATION AND BRIEF
SUPERCELLULAR STRUCTURES AS SELY/ELY LOW LEVEL FLOW VEERING TO WLY
ALOFT SUPPORTS UPDRAFT ROTATION. BRIEF TORNADOES MAY OCCUR WITH
INITIAL DEVELOPMENT. MEAN WLY FLOW WILL ALLOW STORMS TO GRADUALLY
DEVELOP EWD INTO A VERY UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERE CHARACTERIZED BY LARGE
DEW POINT SPREADS...AND A DMGG WIND/LARGE HAIL THREAT MAY INCREASE
AS CLUSTERS SPREAD EWD.

HIGH BASED CONVECTION IS BEGINNING TO DEVELOP ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS
OF SWRN AND CNTRL MT AS BOUNDARY LAYER DEEPENS AND LOW LEVEL LAPSE
RATES APPROACH DRY ADIABATIC. SATELLITE/LIGHTNING DATA SUGGEST A
FEW OF THE STRONGER UPDRAFTS ARE NOW PRODUCING LIGHTNING AND
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD CONTINUE TO EVOLVE AHEAD OF ADVANCING
COLD FRONT. 18Z TFX SOUNDING IS QUITE MOISTURE-STARVED WITH ONLY
.52 IN PWAT OBSERVED. OBSERVATIONAL DATA SUGGESTS A NARROW AXIS OF
PWAT ON THE ORDER OF .75 IN WITHIN POST-FRONTAL ENVIRONMENT...BUT
QUITE DRY ACROSS THE WARM SECTOR. A FEW DAMAGING WIND GUSTS MAY BE
NOTED WITH THIS ACTIVITY AS INVERTED-V SOUNDINGS DO FAVOR DRY
MICROBURSTS...HOWEVER WITH PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES AS LOW AS THEY
ARE THUNDERSTORMS MAY STRUGGLE TO GENERATE SIGNIFICANT OUTFLOW.

ACROSS THE DAKOTAS AND ALSO INTO SERN WY/NERN CO WILL SUPPORT TSTM
DEVELOPMENT FRIDAY AFTERNOON IN THE WAKE OF A MORNING ERN DAKOTAS
MCS. TSTM DEVELOPMENT SHOULD ALSO BE FOCUSED ALONG A PAIR OF WARM
FRONTS EXTENDING ESEWD FROM SRN ND INTO WRN MN AND FROM SRN SD TO
IA. MOIST WARM SECTOR IS EXPECTED TO BECOME MODERATELY UNSTABLE
BENEATH PLUME OF STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES. STRENGTHENING DEEP
LAYER SHEAR WILL SUPPORT SUPERCELLS PRODUCING HAIL/DAMAGING WINDS
ALONG THE COLD FRONT/WARM FRONTS. THE MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER AND 1 KM
SRH 100-200 M2/S2 WILL ALSO BE FAVORABLE FOR A TORNADO THREAT...
ESPECIALLY IN THE VICINITY OF THE PAIR OF TRIPLE POINTS AND ESEWD
ALONG THE ATTENDANT WARM FRONTS WHERE DIRECTIONAL SHEAR WILL BE
ENHANCED AS THE SWLY LLJ STRENGTHENS FRIDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING.
FURTHER STRENGTHENING OF THE LLJ SUGGESTS ONE OR TWO CONVECTIVE
CLUSTERS WILL EVOLVE FRIDAY NIGHT AND MOVE ACROSS THE ERN DAKOTAS/
NRN NEBRASKA INTO MN/NRN IA...WITH WIND DAMAGE BECOMING THE PRIMARY
THREAT. THIS OUTLOOK HAS INCREASED THE SEVERE PROBABILITIES ACROSS
ERN DAKOTAS INTO WRN MN/ NWRN IA WHERE STORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE FROM
THE AFTERNOON INTO THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD...ENHANCING THE OVERALL
SEVERE WEATHER THREAT.

...MID ATLANTIC STATES TO SRN NEW ENGLAND AND LOWER GREAT LAKES...
A LEAD SHORT WAVE TROUGH WILL MOVE ACROSS SRN NEW ENGLAND FRIDAY
MORNING/AFTERNOON...WHILE THE UPSTREAM HUDSON BAY TROUGH DEVELOPS
SEWD ACROSS THE LOWER GREAT LAKES TO NEW ENGLAND. TSTMS ARE
EXPECTED TO DEVELOP BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON WITHIN A MOIST/MODERATELY
UNSTABLE AIR MASS EXTENDING FROM THE MID ATLANTIC REGION TO SRN NEW
ENGLAND AS A SURFACE FRONT SPREADS ACROSS THIS REGION. DEEP WSWLY
WIND FIELDS AND EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR AROUND 30 KT SUGGEST ORGANIZED
LINE SEGMENTS WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH DAMAGING WINDS BEING THE PRIMARY
THREAT. FARTHER WNW...COLD MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES SPREADING ACROSS
THE LOWER GREAT LAKES SUGGESTS TSTMS DEVELOPING WITHIN CYCLONIC
UPPER LEVEL FLOW REGIME AND ALONG A SECONDARY SURFACE TROUGH SHOULD
SUPPORT AN ISOLATED THREAT FOR STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS FRIDAY
AFTERNOON.

...OH VALLEY TO CAROLINAS...
THE WRN EXTENT OF THE COLD FRONT MOVING THROUGH NEW ENGLAND WILL
SHIFT SLOWLY SWD THROUGH THE OH VALLEY FRIDAY. TSTMS ARE EXPECTED
TO DEVELOP ALONG THIS BOUNDARY BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON AS THE AIR MASS
BECOMES MODERATELY UNSTABLE BENEATH WEAK UPPER FORCING. NWLY FLOW
ALOFT SHOULD SUPPORT EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR AROUND 25 KT AND THE
POTENTIAL FOR A FEW STORMS TO PRODUCE STRONG/DAMAGING WINDS AND/OR
HAIL. A FEW STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE ALONG A
SEA BREEZE BOUNDARY MOVING INLAND ACROSS NERN GA/CAROLINAS.
HERE...TOO...MODERATE INSTABILITY AND MODEST DEEP LAYER SHEAR SHOULD
SUPPORT A FEW ORGANIZED STORMS WITH AN ISOLATED THREAT FOR MAINLY
STRONG WIND GUSTS.

MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 90
STATUTE MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 45 MILES EAST
SOUTHEAST OF JAMESTOWN NEW YORK TO 55 MILES NORTH NORTHEAST OF
WATERTOWN NEW YORK. FOR A COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE
THE ASSOCIATED WATCH OUTLINE UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU8).

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

DISCUSSION...CLUSTER OF INTENSE THUNDERSTORMS OVER ONTARIO WILL
CONTINUE ESEWD INTO WRN NY THIS AFTERNOON WHERE AIR MASS IS ALREADY
MODERATELY UNSTABLE. ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT COULD OCCUR INTO THE
ST. LAWRENCE VALLEY WITH SUBTLE SURFACE TROUGH INTERACTING WITH
INSTABILITY AXIS. SHEAR WILL BE SUFFICIENT FOR ORGANIZATION INTO
LINES/CLUSTERS AS STORMS SHIFT EAST THROUGH THE DAY. LARGE HAIL AND
DAMAGING WINDS ARE EXPECTED WITH THE STRONGER STORMS.

AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
TO 2 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 60
KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 500. MEAN STORM

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1121 AM CDT THU JUN 25 2009

VALID 251630Z - 261200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER A LARGE PART OF THE
CENTRAL/ERN GREAT LAKES INTO THE OH/MID MS VALLEYS...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE NRN HIGH
PLAINS...

...MID-UPPER MS RIVER VALLEY/CENTRAL-ERN GREAT LAKES/OH VALLEY...
SURFACE FEATURES WILL REMAIN DIFFUSE ACROSS THE REGION TODAY WITH
VERY LITTLE LOW LEVEL FLOW TO FOCUS DEVELOPMENT. THIS REMAINS
PRIMARY CONCERN TODAY REGARDING LOCATION OF GREATER SEVERE COVERAGE
AS AIR MASS BECOME VERY UNSTABLE AMONGST WARM/MOIST SUMMER-TIME
BOUNDARY LAYER. ACTIVITY WILL LIKELY INCREASE ACROSS A RELATIVELY
LARGE AREA FROM THE MID/UPPER MS RIVER VALLEY AND CENTRAL GREAT
LAKES DURING THE AFTERNOON AS CAP ERODES AHEAD OF NRN STREAM
SHORTWAVE TROUGH NOW MOVING ACROSS THE NRN/WRN GREAT LAKES. DESPITE
THE WEAK LOW LEVEL FLOW...MID LEVEL FLOW WILL REMAIN MORE THAN
SUFFICIENT FOR ORGANIZATION INTO LINES/CLUSTERS WITH STRONGER SHEAR
SUPPORTIVE OF SUPERCELLS ACROSS THE CENTRAL/ERN GREAT LAKES. LARGE
HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BE PRIMARY SEVERE THREATS
WITH ACTIVITY PERSISTING INTO THE EVENING SEWD TOWARDS THE OH RIVER
VALLEY AND EWD INTO PORTIONS OF PA/NY.

ADDITIONAL CLUSTER OF STRONG/SEVERE STORMS SHOULD INCREASE WITH
DIURNAL HEATING INTO PORTIONS OF MO/MID MS RIVER VALLEY AS SUBTLE
MID LEVEL IMPULSE CONTINUES SSEWD AROUND SRN PLAINS UPPER RIDGE.
THIS WILL PROVIDE SUFFICIENT MEAN FLOW FOR SOME CLUSTERING OF THE
MORE ROBUST CORES ALONG A COMMON OUTFLOW AND PERHAPS A MORE
PERSISTENT WIND DAMAGE THREAT...DRIVEN MAINLY BY STEEPENING LOW
LEVEL LAPSE RATES.

...NRN/CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS...
SEVERE THREAT WILL LIKELY EVOLVE WITHIN SEPARATE REGIMES ACROSS THIS
AREA LATE TODAY AND THIS EVENING. NRN PORTION OVER CENTRAL MT WILL
BE DRIVEN MORE BY LARGE SCALE FORCING AHEAD OF STRENGTHENING SURFACE
COLD FRONT MOVING ACROSS THE NRN ROCKIES THIS AFTERNOON. DESPITE
ONLY MODEST INSTABILITY...STEEP LAPSE RATES AND STRENGTHENING WLY
WINDS ALOFT SHOULD SUPPORT THREATS OF DAMAGING WINDS AND HAIL WITH
THE STRONGER STORMS SPREADING QUICKLY ENEWD THROUGH THE EVENING.
ACROSS THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS...SEVERE THREAT WILL BE MORE DRIVEN
BY WEAK UPSLOPE FLOW AND SUBTLE IMPULSES EVIDENT ON WV IMAGERY
ROTATING ACROSS THE GREAT BASIN/CENTRAL ROCKIES. THIS ACTIVITY WILL
LIKELY SPREAD EWD OFF THE HIGHER TERRAIN DURING THE MID/LATE
AFTERNOON AND LIKELY EVOLVE AS A FEW CLUSTERS OF STRONG TO SEVERE
STORMS. LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS SHOULD BE PRIMARY SEVERE
THREATS OVER THIS REGION...WITH POSSIBLE MCS PERSISTING INTO THE
CENTRAL PLAINS OVERNIGHT.

SEVERE THREAT IS INCREASING ACROSS PARTS OF UPSTATE NY...SEVERE
THUNDERSTORM WATCH MAY BE REQUIRED SHORTLY.

THUNDERSTORMS HAVE RECENTLY INTENSIFIED ACROSS PARTS OF SRN
ONTARIO...WELL AHEAD OF MAIN UPPER TROUGH AXIS THAT EXTENDS ACROSS
LAKE SUPERIOR/WI. THIS ACTIVITY APPEARS TO BE DRIVEN IN LARGE PART
BY RAPID BOUNDARY LAYER WARMING ALONG ZONE OF SOMEWHAT STRONGER LOW
LEVEL CONVERGENCE. ADDITIONALLY...RAPID CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT
ALONG WRN SHORE OF LAKE ONTARIO MAY BE ENHANCED BY LAKE BREEZE
CONVERGENCE. WITH ABUNDANT SUNSHINE EXPECTED TO ENHANCE FURTHER
STEEPENING OF THE BOUNDARY LAYER ACROSS UPSTATE NY...IT APPEARS
CONDITIONS WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY SUPPORTIVE OF ROBUST UPDRAFT
DEVELOPMENT. AS WLY FLOW INCREASES ACROSS SRN ONTARIO IT/S LIKELY
THAT EVOLVING THUNDERSTORM CLUSTERS WILL PROPAGATE ACROSS LAKE
ONTARIO INTO UPSTATE NY. GIVEN THAT ACTIVITY NEAR TORONTO HAS
ALREADY PRODUCED LARGE HAIL IT SEEMS REASONABLE THAT HAIL THREAT
WILL BE NOTED WITH STRONGER UPDRAFTS...IN ADDITION TO DAMAGING
WINDS.
