SPC AC 031718

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1218 PM CDT WED SEP 03 2008

VALID 041200Z - 051200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE MID MS/LOWER OH
VALLEYS...

...SYNOPSIS...
MODELS REMAIN IN GENERAL AGREEMENT WITH THE EVOLUTION OF UPPER FLOW
PATTERN THROUGH THURSDAY...SHOWING A BROAD LONG WAVE TROUGH
DEVELOPING FROM THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST TO THE MS VALLEY/GREAT LAKES
REGION. A PAIR OF SHORT WAVE TROUGHS MOVING THROUGH ALBERTA AND THE
NRN HIGH PLAINS TODAY WILL PROGRESS ENEWD INTO THE UPPER MS
VALLEY/MANITOBA ON DAY 2...WHILE ANOTHER IMPULSE DIGS SEWD REACHING
THE CENTRAL ROCKIES BY 12Z FRIDAY.

...MIDDLE/LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AND LOWER OHIO VALLEY...
THERE REMAINS SOME DIFFERENCES WITH TIMING OF THE REMNANTS OF GUSTAV
AS IT BECOMES MORE EXTRATROPICAL DURING DAY 2 PERIOD... TRACKING
NEWD ALONG ERN PERIPHERY OF THE DEVELOPING CENTRAL U.S. LONG WAVE
TROUGH. DESPITE THESE TIMING DIFFERENCES...EVEN THE SLOWER UKMET
INDICATED A SSWLY LLJ /40-50 KT/ AND SWLY MID LEVEL WINDS OF 40 KT
SPREADING ACROSS THE MID MS/LOWER OH VALLEYS THURSDAY
AFTERNOON/EVENING. AHEAD OF THE REMNANT GUSTAV CYCLONE...A STALLED
FRONTAL BOUNDARY INITIALLY LOCATED NEAR THE OH RIVER VALLEY AT 12Z
THURSDAY SHOULD MOVE NWD ACROSS IL/IND/OH. THE PRESENCE OF THIS
EFFECTIVE WARM FRONT...STRONG LOW LEVEL FLOW/ SRH AHEAD OF
GUSTAV...COMBINED WITH A MOIST AIRMASS /UPPER 60S TO LOWER 70S F
SURFACE DEWPOINTS/...SUPPORT THE GREATEST RISK FOR ISOLATED
TORNADOES AND CONVECTIVELY ENHANCED WIND DAMAGE ACROSS THE MID
MS/LOWER OH VALLEYS. THIS SHOULD ESPECIALLY BE POSSIBLE DURING THE
DAYLIGHT HOURS AS INSOLATION BOOSTS NEAR-SURFACE CAPE/PARCEL
ACCELERATIONS. ALTHOUGH LOW LEVEL FLOW/SRH WILL GRADUALLY BE
WEAKENING WITH SWD EXTENT DURING THE DAY ACROSS THE MID-SOUTH/LOWER
MS VALLEY...A RISK FOR ISOLATED TORNADOES/WIND DAMAGE WILL
NEVERTHELESS CONTINUE DURING DAY 2 PERIOD.

...CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS...
HEIGHT FALLS ARE EXPECTED AHEAD OF A SHORTWAVE TROUGH APPROACHING
THE CENTRAL ROCKIES. IN RESPONSE TO THIS SYSTEM...LEE CYCLOGENESIS
WITH AN INCREASING LOW LEVEL/MOIST UPSLOPE REGIME SHOULD RESULT IN
AN UPSWING OF TSTMS ACROSS THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS THURSDAY
AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING. WHILE BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE WILL
INITIALLY BE LIMITED GIVEN THE EARLY-STAGE UPSLOPE...INCREASING
WINDS ALOFT/VERTICAL SHEAR AND STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL
SUPPORT A RISK FOR SOME SUPERCELLS WITH SEVERE HAIL AND STRONG WIND
GUSTS...ESPECIALLY ACROSS PORTIONS OF EASTERN CO/NORTHEAST NM. A
STRENGTHENING SLY LLJ/WAA REGIME EXTENDING INTO WRN KS THURSDAY
NIGHT IS EXPECTED TO RESULT IN ELEVATED TSTMS SPREADING EWD INTO WRN
KS AND PART OF THE OK/TX PANHANDLES. THE EXISTENCE OF STEEP MID
LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND A FURTHER INCREASE IN EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR AS
A 50 KT WLY MID LEVEL JET REACHES THIS REGION LATE IN THE PERIOD
SHOULD SUPPORT A THREAT FOR ISOLATED HAIL WITH THE STRONGER
ACTIVITY.

...SOUTHEAST STATES COAST...
LATEST NHC GUIDANCE SUGGESTS A SLOWER NWWD TRACK OF TROPICAL STORM
HANNA AND SLIGHTLY EAST OF PREVIOUS FORECASTS. GIVEN THIS NEW NHC
GUIDANCE...THE FRONT RIGHT QUADRANT OF HANNA IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN
OFFSHORE OF THE SRN ATLANTIC COAST THROUGH THE DAY 2 PERIOD. FOR
THIS REASON...THE LOW SEVERE WEATHER PROBABILITIES HAVE BEEN REMOVED
FROM THIS OUTLOOK.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

VALID 031630Z - 041200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS TODAY INTO TONIGHT FOR THE
LOWER MS VALLEY...

...LOWER MS VALLEY TODAY INTO TONIGHT...
THE REMNANTS OF GUSTAV ARE CENTERED NEAR TXK AS OF MID MORNING.
THIS SYSTEM WILL LIKELY DRIFT NWD/NNEWD TODAY...BEFORE ACCELERATING
NEWD OVERNIGHT IN RESPONSE TO UPSTREAM HEIGHT FALLS WITH A MID LEVEL
TROUGH OVER THE CENTRAL ROCKIES. THE GUSTAV REMNANTS ARE IN THE
PROCESS OF EVOLVING FROM A WARM CORE STRUCTURE TO MORE OF AN OPEN
BAROCLINIC WAVE AS FRONTAL ZONE BECOMES ENTRAINED INTO THE CYCLONE
FROM THE W.

THE PRIMARY CONVECTIVE BAND THIS MORNING HAS BEEN FOCUSED ALONG THE
LEADING EDGE OF THE MID LEVEL DRY SLOT AND AN ASSOCIATED SURFACE
TROUGH ACROSS CENTRAL LA. THIS BOUNDARY WILL TEND TO DRIFT EWD
AROUND THE S SIDE OF THE CYCLONE AND LIKELY CONTINUE TO FOCUS
CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE DAY. VWP AND PROFILER HODOGRAPHS
SUGGEST THAT LOW-LEVEL SHEAR HAS WEAKENED SOME SINCE
YESTERDAY...THOUGH THE STRONGEST FLOW/SHEAR MAY STILL EXIST BETWEEN
OBSERVING POINTS IN A NARROW CORRIDOR ALONG THE MS RIVER. THE
RICHEST LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE AND ASSOCIATED BUOYANCY IS FEEDING INTO
THE CONVECTIVE BAND FROM THE NW GULF INTO SRN LA...AND WITHIN A
NARROW BELT OF CLEARING ACROSS CENTRAL LA. FARTHER N...WIDESPREAD
CLOUDS/RAIN HAVE AND WILL LIKELY CONTINUE TO LIMIT INSTABILITY...
DESPITE STRONGER LOW-LEVEL SHEAR. THE NET RESULT SHOULD BE A ZONE
OF FAVORABLE OVERLAP OF VERTICAL SHEAR AND INSTABILITY FOR
SUPERCELLS AND A FEW TORNADOES FROM CENTRAL LA NWD ACROSS WRN MS
INTO SE AR TODAY. THE TORNADO THREAT WILL BECOME MORE CONDITIONAL
TONIGHT AS THE SYSTEM BEGINS TO MOVE NEWD TOWARD SRN MO.

...HIGH PLAINS THIS AFTERNOON...
THE LOW LEVELS ARE RELATIVELY COOL/DRY ACROSS THE HIGH PLAINS IN THE
WAKE OF THE RECENT FRONTAL PASSAGE...AND 12Z SOUNDINGS SHOW LITTLE
POTENTIAL FOR DEEP CONVECTION OVER THIS REGION. HOWEVER...STEEPER
LAPSE RATES ARE LOCATED UPSTREAM IN ASSOCIATION WITH A SHORTWAVE
TROUGH NOW MOVING EWD OVER NRN UT/ERN ID/WRN WY. THIS MID LEVEL
TROUGH WILL REACH THE HIGH PLAINS LATER THIS AFTERNOON IN PHASE WITH
THE DIURNAL CYCLE AND SUPPORT SUFFICIENT SURFACE-BASED INSTABILITY
FOR HIGH-BASED THUNDERSTORMS. THE STEEP LAPSE RATES AND COOLING MID
LEVEL TEMPERATURES MAY ALLOW A FEW STORMS TO PRODUCE MOSTLY SMALL
HAIL.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 031227
SWODY1
SPC AC 031224

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0724 AM CDT WED SEP 03 2008

VALID 031300Z - 041200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF THE LOWER MS
RIVER VALLEY INTO THE MID SOUTH...

...SRN MO/AR/LA/WRN MS...
REMNANTS OF GUSTAV WILL MAINTAIN A FAIRLY WELL-DEVELOPED LOW-LEVEL
CIRCULATION AS IT MOVES FROM FAR SERN OK/SWRN AR NNEWD INTO NRN
AR/SRN MO TONIGHT...ACCELERATING AS IT BECOMES MORE EMBEDDED WITHIN
WESTERLIES DURING LATTER HALF OF PERIOD.

WIDESPREAD PRECIPITATION INVOF CENTER OF GUSTAV WILL RESULT IN
GENERALLY A NEUTRAL/MOIST-ADIABATIC ENVIRONMENT. HOWEVER...
OCCASIONAL/TEMPORARY BREAKS IN CLOUD COVER AWAY FROM THE CENTER WILL
ALLOW LIMITED HEATING/MINIMAL DESTABILIZATION TO OCCUR WITHIN THE
SYSTEM/S ERN SEMICIRCLE. THUS...WITH THE LIKELIHOOD OF
SOMEWHAT-MORE CELLULAR CONVECTION EVOLVING THROUGH THE DAY IN OUTER
CONVECTIVE BANDS...DEGREE OF LOW-LEVEL SHEAR WILL LIKELY RESULT IN
ANOTHER DIURNAL INCREASE IN TORNADO POTENTIAL.

PRIMARY THREAT WILL LIKELY CONTINUE ONCE AGAIN NEARER THE GULF COAST
INTO THE LOWER MS RIVER VALLEY WHERE INFLUX OF RICHER MOISTURE AND
STRONGER HEATING WILL SUSTAIN MODEST SBCAPE. ALTHOUGH STRONGEST LOW
LEVEL SHEAR WILL BE DISPLACED FROM THIS REGION...SFC-1 KM SRH WILL
REMAIN MORE THAN ADEQUATE FOR ROTATING STORMS/THREAT OF TORNADOES
FOR MUCH OF THE PERIOD UNTIL CENTER FINALLY PULLS NEWD LATE TONIGHT.

...FRONT RANGE OF CO INTO ERN WY...
MODELS ARE CONSISTENT IN DEVELOPING WEAK INSTABILITY ALONG AND JUST
EAST CO/WY FRONT RANGE THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING...DESPITE RELATIVELY
DRY AIR IN PLACE OVER LOWER ELEVATIONS. THEREFORE...MID/UPPER LEVEL
TROUGH MOVING ACROSS THE NRN ROCKIES MAY INDUCE ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT. DEEP LAYER SHEAR WILL BE QUITE STRONG AND
SHOULD ALLOW A FEW STRONGER UPDRAFTS TO SUPPORT A RISK OF HAIL LATER
TODAY. HOWEVER... OVERALL MEAGER INSTABILITY WILL TEND TO HINDER
OVERALL THREAT ACROSS THIS REGION.

AREAS AFFECTED...S CNTRL THROUGH ERN LA AND SW MS

CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 884...

VALID 030849Z - 031045Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 884 CONTINUES.

THREAT FOR ISOLATED TORNADOES CONTINUES FROM S CNTRL THROUGH ERN LA
AND SW MS. IN ADDITION...VERY HEAVY RAIN WITH RATES LOCALLY FROM 2-3
INCHES OR MORE PER HOUR WILL REMAIN LIKELY THROUGH EARLY MORNING.

THE CENTER OF GUSTAV WAS OVER EXTREME SW AR MOVING VERY SLOWLY NWWD.
BANDS OF CONVECTION REMAIN CONFINED TO A RELATIVELY NARROW CORRIDOR
FROM SW LA NEWD THROUGH ERN LA AND WRN MS. THIS ACTIVITY IS
DEVELOPING WITHIN ZONE OF LOW LEVEL CONFLUENCE PRIMARILY SITUATED
JUST ABOVE THE SURFACE AND EXTENDING THROUGH 850 MB ACCORDING TO
LATEST RUC ANALYSIS. LOW LEVEL HODOGRAPHS REMAIN LARGE OVER THE ERN
HALF OF THE CIRCULATION IN ARC ALONG LOW LEVEL JET AXIS FROM ERN LA
THROUGH WRN MS AND NWWD THROUGH AR. INSTABILITY REMAINS VERY LIMITED
OVER THE REGION BUT IS GREATER OVER SRN LA IN CLOSER PROXIMITY TO
GULF WHERE THE BEST COMBINATION OF CAPE AND 0-1 KM SHEAR EXISTS. A
FEW SEMI-DISCRETE ROTATING STORMS CONTINUE TO BE OBSERVED OVER S
CNTRL THROUGH E CNTRL LA.

VERY LITTLE MOVEMENT OF THE CONVECTIVE BAND IS EXPECTED DURING THE
NEXT FEW HOURS AND STORMS DEVELOPING WITHIN THE BAND WILL CONTINUE
TO TRAIN NEWD ALONG THE SAME PATH. THIS AND VERY MOIST PROFILES WITH
PRECIPITABLE WATERS IN EXCESS OF 2 INCHES WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT
VERY HEAVY RAIN IN THE CORRIDOR FROM ERN LA THROUGH WRN MS THIS
MORNING.
