THE TYBEE ISLAND LIFEGUARDS REPORT EXTREME EROSION IS IN
PROGRESS ON TYBEE ISLAND. SEVERAL LIFEGUARD TOWERS HAVE
BEEN UNDERMINED AND/OR DESTROYED. FENCES ALONG THE DUNE
LINE HAVE SUSTAINED DAMAGE. THE BEACH IS NEARLY NON-
EXISTENT DUE TO THE ONGOING HIGH TIDES AND HIGH SURF.

OFFICIALS WITH THE NOAA SAPELO ISLAND NATIONAL ESTUARINE
RESEARCH RESERVE REPORTED CATASTROPHIC EROSION IS IN
PROGRESS UP AND DOWN SAPELO ISLAND. ALL TURTLE NESTING
GROUNDS HAVE BEEN DESTROYED. 20-30 FT OF LAND/BEACH HAS
ERODED OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS CREATING CLIFTS AT HIGH AS
8 TO 10 FEET. MANY ROADWAYS ALONG THE SOUTHERN END OF THE
ISLAND HAVE BEEN FLOODING AT HIGH TIDE. SEVERAL ROADWAYS
HAVE BEEN UNDERMINED AS WELL. DOCKS HAVE ALSO BEEN
DAMAGED.
