MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2171
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0425 AM CST SAT DEC 01 2007

AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS WEST CENTRAL KS

CONCERNING...FREEZING RAIN

VALID 011025Z - 011330Z

A SHORT DURATION OF FREEZING RAIN WITH RATES UP TO 0.05 INCH IN A 3
HOUR PERIOD WILL BE POSSIBLE ACROSS PART OF WEST CENTRAL KS FROM
GREELEY/WICHITA COUNTIES TO ELLIS/GRAHAM COUNTIES...WITH LIGHTER
AMOUNTS FROM PARTS OF SCOTT TO RUSH COUNTIES. FREEZING RAIN SHOULD
BEGIN BY 12Z...AND THEN END BY MID MORNING AS SURFACE TEMPERATURES
RISE ABOVE 32 F.

SURFACE OBSERVATIONS DURING THE LAST 1-2 HOURS ACROSS SW INTO WEST
CENTRAL KS HAVE SHOWN INCREASING SURFACE DEWPOINTS INTO THE
MID-UPPER 20S WHILE SURFACE TEMPERATURES HAVE HOVERED AROUND THE
29-31 F RANGE. RECENT OBSERVATIONS INDICATED LIGHT PRECIPITATION
DEVELOPING ACROSS PARTS OF SW KS. THIS TREND IS EXPECTED TO
CONTINUE AND EXPAND ACROSS WEST CENTRAL KS WITH SOME INCREASE IN
PRECIPITATION RATES AS LARGE SCALE ASCENT EVIDENT IN AREA OF COOLING
CLOUD TOPS SPREADING EWD INTO THE CENTRAL PLAINS. FORECAST MODELS
AGREE THAT AS THE CO SURFACE LOW CONTINUES TO DEEPEN AND MOVE TOWARD
ERN CO BY EARLY AFTERNOON...SURFACE WINDS ACROSS MUCH OF KS WILL
VEER TO SLY AND COMBINED WITH STRONG LOW LEVEL WAA RESULT IN RISING
SURFACE TEMPERATURES. THUS...FREEZING RAIN EVENT ACROSS THIS PART
OF W CENTRAL KS IS EXPECTED TO BE OF SHORT DURATION.
