MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2499
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0511 PM CST SUN DEC 21 2008
AREAS AFFECTED...NRN MA...VT/NH AND MAINE
CONCERNING...BLIZZARD
VALID 212311Z - 220315Z
BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WILL BEGIN ACROSS NRN VT/NH AND MOST OF MAINE.
HERE RATES OF 2 TO 3 INCHES AN HOUR WILL BE LIKELY BY 03Z...WITH
STRONG WINDS SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCING VISIBILITIES IN BLOWING SNOW. TO
THE W AND S OF THESE AREAS IN NRN MA...AND SRN VT/NH...HEAVY SNOW
WITH RATES NEAR 1 INCH AN HOUR WILL BE LIKELY FOR THE NEXT FEW HOURS
BEFORE GRADUALLY DECREASING...ALTHOUGH STRONG WINDS WILL CAUSE
VISIBILITY REDUCTIONS IN THESE AREAS AS WELL.
A STRENGTHENING NOR'EASTER IS INFLUENCING HEAVY SNOW ACROSS NEW
ENGLAND THIS EVENING...AND RAPIDLY DETERIORATING CONDITIONS CAN BE
EXPECTED INTO NRN VT/NH AND MAINE. THE MAIN UPPER LOW IS CURRENTLY
LOCATED NEAR SWRN QUEBEC...AND STRONG UPPER DIVERGENCE AHEAD OF THE
LOW HAS INFLUENCED INTENSE PRESSURE FALLS AT THE SURFACE.
BOMBOGENESIS CONTINUES...WITH LATEST OBSERVATIONS SHOWING 3 MB OR
GREATER DECREASES IN PRESSURE NEAR THE COAST...AND 2 MB AN HOUR JUST
INLAND WHERE HEAVY SNOW IS ONGOING. THE SURFACE LOW NOW LOCATED
ROUGHLY NEAR THE TIP OF CAPE COD WILL CONTINUE TO DEEPEN AND MOVE
NWD ALONG THE COAST OF MAINE BEFORE FINALLY MOVING INLAND NEAR
DOWNEAST. RESULTANT INCREASE IN PRESSURE GRADIENT AS THE SYSTEM
STRENGTHENS WILL CREATE STRONG WLY TO WNWLY WINDS BEHIND THE
SYSTEM...AND BLIZZARD CONDITIONS IN NRN VT/NH AND MAINE. 18Z/12Z
SOUNDING COMPARISON AT GYX MAINE SHOWS SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN WARM
ADVECTION...AND SATURATION BETWEEN THE SURFACE AND 700 MB...WITH THE
700 TO 500 MB APPROACHING SATURATION AS WELL. AREAS TO THE N OF THE
LOW WILL HAVE A FEW MORE HOURS TO SATURATE FURTHER WITH MARITIME
AIR...ALLOWING RATES TO INCREASE TO 2 TO 3 INCHES PER HOUR IN
COMBINATION WITH STRONG UVV.
