MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2519
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0611 PM CST WED DEC 24 2008
AREAS AFFECTED...NRN/CNTRL ME...NRN NH
CONCERNING...FREEZING RAIN
VALID 250011Z - 250345Z
FREEZING RAIN WITH RATES BETWEEN 0.05" TO 0.10" PER HOUR WILL MOVE
ACROSS NRN NH AND MUCH OF MAINE THIS EVENING.
AS A SHORTWAVE TROUGH MOVES FROM THE GREAT LAKES REGION TO SRN
QUEBEC BY 06 UTC...PRECIPITATION WILL RAPIDLY INCREASE FROM THE WEST
REACHING NRN NH/WRN MAINE BY 02 UTC. COOLING CLOUD TOPS ACROSS NY/VT
ARE SUGGESTIVE OF INCREASING LARGE SCALE ASCENT...WITH LIGHT TO
MODERATE RAIN PRESENTLY OCCURRING ACROSS ERN NY AND SRN NEW ENGLAND.
AT THE SURFACE THE FREEZING LINE CURRENTLY EXTENDS FROM THE COASTAL
REGION OF MAINE TO JUST NORTH OF CON...TO RUT...AND THEN NORTH TO
CYSC. WARM AIR ADVECTION ASSOCIATED WITH A STRONG SWLY JET /60 KTS
AT 850 MB/ AND VEERING WIND PROFILE SUGGEST A RAPID TRANSITION FROM
SNOW TO FREEZING RAIN WITH RATES BETWEEN 0.05" TO 0.10" PER HOUR
BETWEEN 02 TO 06 UTC. SRN SECTIONS OF THE AREA MAY CHANGE TO ALL
RAIN BETWEEN 03 TO 06 UTC. AS THE TROUGH LIFTS NEWD INTO SRN QUEBEC
SHORTY AFTER 06 UTC...COOLING ALOFT WILL ERODE THE ELEVATED WARM
LAYER AND DECREASE THE THREAT OF ADDITIONAL FREEZING RAIN.
