MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0034
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0534 AM CST MON JAN 12 2009
AREAS AFFECTED...MUCH OF THE NRN PLAINS
CONCERNING...BLIZZARD
VALID 121134Z - 121530Z
BLIZZARD CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO PERSIST THROUGH THE MORNING
ACROSS PART OF FAR SERN MT/MUCH OF WRN ND AND NWRN SD...WHILE ALSO
DEVELOPING SEWD THROUGH SRN ND AND MUCH OF CENTRAL SD BETWEEN
12-15Z. SUSTAINED WINDS AT 35-45 KT WILL PRODUCE VISIBILITIES AOB
1/4 MILE...AT TIMES...ESPECIALLY IN LOCATIONS WITH NEW SNOWFALL.
THESE BLIZZARD CONDITIONS SHOULD REACH SERN SD/FAR SWRN-WRN MN
BETWEEN 15-18Z.
10Z SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWED AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE ATTENDANT TO THE
NRN PLAINS CLIPPER SYSTEM LOCATED ALONG THE CENTRAL PORTION OF THE
SD/ND BORDER TO THE NE OF MBG. GREATEST SURFACE PRESSURE FALLS ARE
FOCUSED IN THE TRI-STATE AREA OF SD/MN/IA...WITH SHORT TERM MODELS
SUGGESTING THE SURFACE LOW WILL TRACK SEWD REACHING NWRN IA BY 18Z.
STRONG SURFACE PRESSURE GRADIENT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM ALONG
THE WRN/NRN PERIPHERIES OF THE LOW PRESSURE CENTER HAS RESULTED IN
SUSTAINED WINDS UP TO 40-45 KT ACROSS SERN MT/WRN ND AND NWRN SD
WITH GUSTS TO 50-60+ KT. THE COMBINATION OF THESE WINDS BLOWING
ACROSS EXISTING AND/OR NEW FALLEN SNOW WILL CREATE BLIZZARD
CONDITIONS AS THE STRONG PRESSURE GRADIENT SPREADS SEWD IN THE WAKE
OF THE SURFACE LOW.
