A LARGE UPPER TROUGH IS IN PLACE OVER THE WESTERN STATES
TODAY...WITH SEVERAL SHORTWAVE TROUGHS ROTATING ACROSS THE GREAT
BASIN. ONE SYSTEM CURRENTLY OVER EASTERN ID IS FORECAST TO MOVE
EASTWARD AND EMERGE INTO THE NORTHERN PLAINS LATER THIS AFTERNOON.
STRONG SOUTHERLY LOW LEVEL WINDS ACROSS THE REGION WILL HELP TO
SLOWLY MOISTEN THE BOUNDARY LAYER...WHILE FULL SUNSHINE LEADS TO
STEEP LAPSE RATES AND A NARROW AXIS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY.
PRESENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP
ALONG THE SURFACE COLD FRONT OVER THE WESTERN DAKOTAS INTO WESTERN
NEB BY LATE AFTERNOON. A FEW OF THE STORMS WILL BE CAPABLE HAIL AND
DAMAGING WINDS THROUGH EARLY EVENING BEFORE DIURNAL COOLING
COMMENCES.
