GREAT LAKES THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT...
THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER IN NORMAN OK IS FORECASTING THE
DEVELOPMENT OF FAIRLY WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND HAIL OVER A
LARGE PART OF THE MIDWEST AND LOWER GREAT LAKES THIS AFTERNOON AND
TONIGHT.
THE AREAS MOST LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE THIS ACTIVITY INCLUDE
NORTHERN/CENTRAL ILLINOIS
NORTHERN INDIANA
SOUTHERN LOWER MICHIGAN
WESTERN AND NORTHERN NEW YORK
NORTHERN OHIO
WESTERN AND NORTHERN PENNSYLVANIA
SURROUNDING THE AREA OF GREATEST RISK...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE
ALSO POSSIBLE FROM PARTS OF THE SOUTHERN PLAINS THROUGH THE MID
MISSISSIPPI AND OHIO VALLEYS TO THE APPALACHIANS.
SEVERAL EPISODES OF THUNDERSTORMS...SOME SEVERE...WILL AFFECT A
FAIRLY WIDE CORRIDOR FROM THE PLAINS TO NEW ENGLAND THIS AFTERNOON
THROUGH EARLY THURSDAY AS TWO JET STREAM DISTURBANCES CONTINUE TO
ADVANCE EAST FROM THE NORTHERN PLAINS AND UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
TO THE LOWER GREAT LAKES.
FIRST DISTURBANCE...ALREADY RESPONSIBLE FOR A FEW SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS THIS MORNING IN LOWER MICHIGAN AND NORTHWEST
INDIANA...WILL CONTINUE EAST TOWARD THE LOWER GREAT LAKES BY
TONIGHT. AS THE AIR MASS HEATS AND DESTABILIZES DOWNSTREAM AHEAD OF
IT...INTENSIFICATION AND/OR REDEVELOPMENT OF THUNDERSTORMS MAY OCCUR
OVER PARTS OF NORTHERN OHIO AND SOUTHERN ONTARIO THIS AFTERNOON.
THESE STORMS MAY EVOLVE INTO A LARGE CLUSTER OF STORMS THAT SHOULD
CONTINUE EAST INTO WESTERN NEW YORK AND NORTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA WITH
AN ATTENDANT THREAT FOR DAMAGING WINDS AND PERHAPS A TORNADO THROUGH
MID-EVENING.
MEANWHILE...APPROACH OF THE SECOND UPPER DISTURBANCE AND DAYTIME
HEATING LIKELY WILL FOSTER ADDITIONAL SEVERE STORMS THIS AFTERNOON
ALONG A COLD FRONT OVER EASTERN IOWA...NORTHERN ILLINOIS...SOUTHERN
WISCONSIN...AND NORTHERN INDIANA. THESE STORMS LIKELY WILL MERGE
INTO AN EXTENSIVE LINE THAT WILL BUILD EAST INTO SOUTHERN LOWER
MICHIGAN...NORTHERN OHIO...WESTERN NEW YORK...AND NORTHWEST
PENNSYLVANIA BY MID/LATE EVENING...BRINGING WITH IT ANOTHER ROUND OF
HIGH WINDS...HAIL...AND POSSIBLY A COUPLE TORNADOES. THE SEVERE
THREAT MAY CONTINUE THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING IN UPSTATE NEW YORK.
STATE AND LOCAL EMERGENCY MANAGERS ARE MONITORING THIS DEVELOPING
SITUATION. THOSE IN THE THREATENED AREA ARE URGED TO REVIEW SEVERE
WEATHER SAFETY RULES AND TO LISTEN TO RADIO...TELEVISION...AND NOAA
WEATHER RADIO FOR POSSIBLE WATCHES...WARNINGS...AND STATEMENTS LATER
