MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1740
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0539 PM CDT MON JUL 25 2011

AREAS AFFECTED...WRN SOUTH DAKOTA

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 684...

VALID 252239Z - 260015Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 684
CONTINUES.

THE WATCH IS BEING EXTENDED EAST BY A TIER OF COUNTIES...TRENDS WILL
BE MONITORED FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF AN ADDITIONAL WW FARTHER
EAST...WHICH COULD BECOME NECESSARY LATER THIS EVENING.

CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT HAS UNDERGONE SUBSTANTIAL INTENSIFICATION
DURING THE PAST HOUR OR SO ACROSS THE BLACK HILLS VICINITY OF
WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA INTO SOUTHEASTERN MONTANA. LIGHT WESTERLY DEEP
LAYER MEAN FLOW WILL AID SLOW EASTWARD ADVECTION OF ACTIVITY DURING
THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS...IN AN ENVIRONMENT WITH STEEP LAPSE RATES
AND SIZABLE CAPE...AND SUFFICIENT VEERING OF WIND FIELDS WITH HEIGHT
TO PROVIDE ENOUGH SHEAR FOR SUPERCELLS. INTO THE 01-03Z TIME
FRAME...BROADER SCALE LIFT ASSOCIATED WITH STRENGTHENING CONVERGENCE
AND WARM ADVECTION ON THE NOSE OF A NOCTURNALLY STRENGTHENING
SOUTHERLY LOW-LEVEL JET /UP TO 30 KT/ MAY SUPPORT A CONSOLIDATION OF
ACTIVITY INTO AN EVOLVING MESOSCALE CONVECTIVE SYSTEM. THIS SHOULD
MOSTLY OCCUR ALONG AND NORTH OF A SURFACE FRONT EXTENDING EAST OF
THE BLACK HILLS THROUGH THE VICINITY OF PHILIP AND SOUTH OF PIERRE.
