THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A

* SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF
KANSAS

* EFFECTIVE THIS THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 230 PM UNTIL
1000 PM CDT.

* PRIMARY THREATS INCLUDE...
NUMEROUS DAMAGING WIND GUSTS EXPECTED WITH A FEW SIGNIFICANT
GUSTS TO 90 MPH POSSIBLE
SEVERAL LARGE HAIL EVENTS LIKELY WITH A FEW VERY LARGE HAIL
EVENTS TO 3 INCHES IN DIAMETER POSSIBLE
A FEW TORNADOES POSSIBLE

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 140
STATUTE MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 35 MILES NORTHWEST OF
CONCORDIA KANSAS TO 65 MILES SOUTHEAST OF WICHITA KANSAS. FOR A

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

DISCUSSION...RAPID INTENSE CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT IS EXPECTED WITHIN
THE NEXT FEW HOURS ALONG A WEAK COLD FRONT ADVANCING SOUTHWARD
THROUGH PARTS OF NORTH CENTRAL INTO SOUTHWEST KANSAS. THE STRONGEST
ACTIVITY IS EXPECTED TO FORM NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF THE FRONT AND
OUTFLOW FROM MORNING STORMS...ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL KANSAS... BEFORE
GROWING UPSCALE AND SPREADING SOUTHEASTWARD ALONG THE OUTFLOW
BOUNDARY THROUGH CENTRAL AND EASTERN KANSAS. WITH TEMPERATURES NEAR
100F TO THE SOUTHWEST OF THE AFORMENTIONED BOUNDARIES...THE BOUNDARY
LAYER IS NOW VERY DEEPLY MIXED WITH LARGE TEMPERATURE-DEW POINT
SPREADS. ALONG WITH STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND SIZABLE CAPE IN
THE PRESENCE OF STRONG DEEP LAYER SHEAR...BENEATH 30-40
NORTHWESTERLY 500 MB FLOW...THE ENVIRONMENT APPEARS CONDUCIVE TO
SUPERCELLS AND ORGANIZED STORM DEVELOPMENT CAPABLE OF PRODUCING VERY
LARGE HAIL...AT LEAST INITIALLY...ALONG WITH VERY STRONG DOWNBURSTS.
CONSOLIDATING COLD POOLS SHOULD TEND TO ACCELERATE
SOUTH/SOUTHEASTWARD WITH A BROADER SCALE DAMAGING WIND THREAT INTO
EARLY EVENING.

AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
TO 3 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 80
KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 500. MEAN STORM
MOTION VECTOR 32035.
